Yep, no matter what anyone says about the 1.6s, they are definitely slow. They might just about crack 120 if you get a long enough bit of road, but I managed to safely overtake one on quite a short stretch of road in my old VTR, and they were going for it. Then again I had more power and less weight so it was a given really

I've gone up against one and it couldn't even pull away from my valver (and yes he was trying).. The difference is, he's supposed to be in a sports car!

Went out in a 1.6 facelift one, was expecting alot more from it, quite disappointed with the straight line performance. You'd have to get the 1.8 really.

Anyone got any pictures of MK5s that actually look good? Think a few of us may need convincing

i do admit, in standard form i do not like the look of them, but i would still consider owning one and driving one in standard form until i had the dollar to fine tune the looks to my taste. because the driving experience would be worth it, even if i get bored after a while, i wouldn't give a fuck what anyone else thinks as i do it.

then again, i drove about in a volvo 340 for three months.. so my comments may not count for much

MX5's are fantastic cars.. they are one of the best handling cars made and out of the box will hassle the most expensive of machinery on the track. Add some extra power and it is amazing.

The arial atom is suposed to be amazing to drive but if you drove it any where other than a track you'd look like a right cock, just like if you pull up at the co-op in your mx5 people will think your a cock smoker

They're very good cars, a friend bought one recently - a mk1. Anyone that is too obsessed with the gay image needs to wake up. I'm considering buying one, but it will need a few mods before i can even drive it, being 6'7". There definately isn't much better for £1000.

all I was trying to say was if I was bothered about what other people think, I would be more bothered with getting the approval of people who actually know a bit about cars, than those who purely go on looks etc.

it's like when people would slag off my beetle saying 'oh what a shit car, it's old', they know fuck all about cars and so can't appreciate that there are other reasons i bought the car..

whereas say, a mini enthusiast who still might not like VWs would at least appreciate the reason I drive an old classic.. if you get what i mean

same with the MX5, close minded people who know nothing about the MX5 will say 'oh its a bloke driving an MX5 - gay'. a car enthusiast may still think the same, but can still appreciate that there were other reasons that the owner bought it..

1.6 is the one to have. Alot more parts available, and alot easier to get power out of. the 1.8 is hardly any quicker than the 1.6 in standard form.

Stick a half cage behind the seats to stiffen the chassis, get some ARB's and strut braces, and some decent shocks and springs and not much can touch it down a twisty road. Coilovers from what i've heard and read seem to be a waste of time on MX5's, unless you're spending big moneyz.

I love them personally, they do look abit bubbly, but then look at a Polo...old people look right at home in them.

1.6 mk1 is in my top 3 cars of what i'll be having next. Cheap insurance over a civic or something is swaying me even more towards them.

We went hunting for a mk1 earlier today and found a local 1.6 pretty much standard. My mate put a deposit down and will collect it next week, thinking of getting one myself now.

It was pretty nippy and sounds fantastic even though its only a 1.6. Handling was better than I expected, didn't Clarkson say "A sports car isn't a sports car unless it has pop up headlights"

Yeah so anyone else thinking about getting one I'd say go for it, fun as fuck
