agreed, they are a fun car to drive and the 1.8 will not pull away from my polo but i cant overtake the 1.8 eighter.

but i personally dont like the look of them and i think the interior isnt great but on the plus side they are very fun to drive but there just not a mans car......if pepole saw you in it they might think youve borrwed the gf's car lol

and i saw a brand new audi tt and white the otherday and it was aTDI !!!lol tt in white with tdi = FAIL!

Nippy, and have a well balanced rear wheel drive chassis. Cost £1k upwards.

I've had a good blast with my mate in his 1.6 eunos

i was genuinely expecting it to be quicker than my car, with it being what 300kg lighter

my car pulled away in every gear, and cornered just as fast. in fact i felt like i was holding back when he was in front. but hes not had it that long, is scared of flipping it and has shite rear tyres so i'll let him off

i think they're a good laugh, bit girly but once you are boshin about in them you dont really care coz they're just a good fun car. you even get people in other mk1 mx5s flasing they're popup lights at you when driving past aha

also for the record, the my mate who owns the mx5 is probably one of the shiftiest guys i know. defo not gay

Only people I know or have known that own one is, my uncle who's a magistrate and quite big chap, had a dark green Mk2 as a weekend alternative for his Jag XJ..

And a blonde woman who lives in my street has a red Mk1, 1.8 import, aswell as a white van, and her husband rides bikes.. she won't sell it to me.

my uncle was shifty as fuck, owned a scrap yard, always ringing cars ect, he was a proper mans man always coverd in oil and drinking pints. Then a few years ago he left his misses and came out. He's sold his yard and bought a pub, wares tight t-shirts and freqents rainbows. He's also bumming a lad that was in my class at school

They're good cars, nicely set up for RWD fun.....alot of drifters use them for training...go for it and make it a cool little ride man.

They're convertibles, and not as light as you'd think. The 1.6 Mk1 weighs in at around a tonne!

I used to hate them, but i love the MK1's now, nicely lowered on a set of deep dish wheels, nice sized exhaust, front splitter and a cage and they can look so nice.

If I did get one I would try and mod it similar to this

Since owning my Equip 03's i have always wanted to stick them on a mx-5

Yep, check one of the links on the first or second page about the drift one. Started as a 1.6(?) then stuck an SR20 lump into it.

I've gone up against one and it couldn't even pull away from my valver (and yes he was trying).. The difference is, he's supposed to be in a sports car!

Went out in a 1.6 facelift one, was expecting alot more from it, quite disappointed with the straight line performance. You'd have to get the 1.8 really.

Anyone got any pictures of MK5s that actually look good? Think a few of us may need convincing

Before slagging a car off rotten you really should at least have an idea about what you’re talking about, preferably with some experience behind the wheel.

The MX5 was originally criticised for being slow in its class, a class which contains the likes of the MR2 Turbo.

In about 1993 Mazda updated the MX5 to meet new safety standards, improve the straight line performance and offer more toys. For the Japanese market the 1.6 was replaced entirely with the all new 1.8 engine to pull around the extra weight and add more sparkle to advertisement campaigns.

For some obscure reason the 1.6 didn't die the heroic death it deserved over here. Instead it was revised and restricted to just 90bhp giving the bods at parkers something to write about in their green credentials column.

The intention was simple, this version of the car wouldn't sell and if some poor misguided fool did buy one the lifeless, wheezy little snotbucket that it was would be no comparison to the 1.8. Fortunately for us the plan worked, we didn't see many of these whimpering around our country lanes.

The late 1.6 really was comparable to a donkey pulling a cart.

It's a shame really as the predecessor was something completely different. The early 1.6 was the model that made the car famous.

The early 1.6 was a 115bhp rev-happy screamer with a short ratio gearbox and diff all mounted into a lightweight shell. The sheer lack of luxuries made this car brilliantly capable on the road. The 0-60mph time was pretty good for it's day being sub 9 seconds, only a fraction of a second slower than the later 1.8.

This version of the 1.6 certainly would not bow down to the sheer manliness of Tris in his almighty 16v Polo. Upon embarrassing him on the straights it would have quite literally left him dying in a ditch of some corner in the middle of nowhere.

And yes, I have driven a 16V polo.

my mates is a 1989 import on a G plate 1.6, so that'll be 115bhp?

my 318is was faster than his, but i was just thinking that it wasnt /that/ much slower, not mk4 polo slow anyway :p

Ah the wonders of stereotypes.

After having a Caterham and then a Saxo VTR me and my Dad now jointly own this Mk1.

1990 1.6, about 80,000 miles (I think). Got it for £1500 last summer.

In my opinion, they're good little cars. Don't really give a fuck what someone thinks of me driving it, although I can only drive it on the track as I'm not insured on it.

To be fair it's nothing like the Caterham but I feel it pulls better than the VTR we had, we've taken the whole soft top out to lighten it a bit and have a hard top for it now if it's wet on track. It's got a rollcage that goes down into the sills too. Engine is pretty standard apart from bigger intake.

Can't complain about how it handles, was at Oulton Park on Wednesday and it was great fun.

We put some Daiyama coilovers on prior to the trackday and the ride is good. Also running R888s.

Yeah I'd like something faster maybe, but we can't afford it. S'alright talking all this speculative crap about if you had one or when you tried racing one on the road (yeah your Polo might have pulled away but would you be faster in the corners?), but at the end of the day until you've driven one you can't really give a decent view. This goes for all cars.
