When fitted to a stealth shelf they are, however, perfectly fine for people like me who couldn't give two fucks about top quality audio in their car.

If I want really high quality sound, I'll sit in front of my £2k home separates system and enjoy that.

Quite frankly, with road noise, engine noise and rattles not to mention that you're surrounded by glass it's not like you're making the most of expensive speakers by fitting them in a car.

I'm quite happy with my 6x9s and wanky cheap amp. They do the trick to a high enough quality for me to enjoy my music in my car.

i agree...listening to AC/DC through 3" paper speakers is what the POLO is designed on.

right so you've gone over what not to do with a smallish budget. so what would u now recommend for say 200-300 quid not including the head unit and wires?

that is the most entertaining thread I have read in a long time. I have only one prob with it though, its all based on the assumption that the 6x9s were fitted in the rear of the car. Whats the rules if they are mounted up front?Surely its no different to having fitted a set of coax's? I had a set fitted in the front of my gt and thought they were ok

I liked my sound to be all around me and set the speakers up througha expensive head unit which variated the sound around me ..

I had a nice set too not cheap crap form hallfords whichj were fitted by a respectable ICE suplier in my area ..

They had fitted everything to my car speaker wise until it was all stolen a month or so ago ..

Unless you're a complete Audiophile and totally soundproof your car then i dont believe in paying absolute top whack for car audio. Fair enough you want it to sound decent and loud enough to enjoy, but its never gonna be like an expensive home-cinema setup for example, unless you really go to town with sound dynamics etc, or start spending thousands, which is when it becomes a whole different ball game in car modding.

A decent head unit, decent components and maybe a sub is all you need in my world . Sound bounces around everywhere in a car anyway!

daft point maybe but, with the sub/6x9's sharing the same air space, is it worth boxing off behind the 6x9's/ie separating the two so to speak?

from what I've read type2dub (yes, i read the whole thread :)) it seems that its a safer bet to box them off, but, in all fairness, a few of my mates have subs and 6x9's all using the boot air space, and it sounds fine. and one of them uses a shit £10 accustic sollutions head unit from brownhills market that doesnt even fit properly.

just to add, he is running 2 12inch mutant subs and 2 vibe slick 6x9's in a renault clio, literally has no room in the boot, as in the trim round the inside by the boot hook thing had to come out the car to fit the amp there. just all rear end sound than balanced. Theres probably 2 inches (if that) between the sub box and the bottom of the 6x9's

but then again, its all bout bass with him, hes not arsed bout much else lol

I think I'll settle this one, if you want quality over quantity go for a proper set up with components and a sub and amp with a decent head unit, if you want quantity over quality go for 6x9s (can't see why you'd go for this option myself as audio quality is far more important than quantity, what is the point in listening to music if it sounds crap?)

To be honest 6x9s aren't worth the hassle of cutting the holes in your parcle shelf, they may sound better mounted somewhere else but they'll never look as good or sound as good as round components mounted up front.

As for the sub and 6x9s sharing the same airspace its true, the displacement of air by the sub messes with the cones on the 6x9s. It is all common sense, if you think about it the air being moved by a sub is more powerful than the air moved by the 6x9s so the cone in the 6x9s won't be able to cope with the air moved by the sub pushing against the cone, this in turn is more likely to not only distort the quality but damage the 6x9s too.

I agree with bass mekanik and foxie, you can't beat a good quality set up no matter how you set up your 6x9s.

I spent almost a grand on my system though and they were profesionally fitted with amp ect .

i still think speakers all around .. ie in the front ion the back sounds better esp when set up correctly .

From reading this I think the argument between Foxy and Pug 306 was very amusing and also educational.

I'm in the same boat as to start off a simple, cheap set-up and the conclusion i've come to with is surely replacing the crappy paper cones at the front of the car would be much simpler and more effective, rather than to keep the OEM speakers in the front and then spend that money having quality speakers at the back of the car.

When you sit in the front of the car, surely you want that sound to be directed to where you are sitting?

(unless of course your a back-seat shagger and want a bit of quality in the back lol)

Just to further clarify, when driving you will be sitting in the front seats and all you will be listening to will be the speakers in the front (generally), if you go and spend money on rears speakers and leave the fronts stock then it will still be the same poor quality in the first place right?

Yes they do attract thieves but you can try to avoid this with a stealth installation... I have 7x10's with a 12" sub and it sounds fine. The sound on mine was not at the back so I had to adjust the fader to the rear to find the sweet spot. As for 6x9's well you have your co-axials and you have your components... mine are the DLS Ref 710 which are custom made for me by DLS... running on a DLS amp and I honestly cannot fault them... other 6x9's I would say live up to their job are the Genesis Profile series.. My speakers up front are still standard and I feel the Alpine HU with the 'Image' feature has helped me to get the best out of them. I might in the future go for some MB Quart components up front but right now it sounds good.

i quite like my 8 year old kenwood 6x9s mounted in what used to be the rear 'door' cards of my stripped out, track orientated polo. :)

the genny 6x9s are subs, NOT coax so are pretty irrelevant to this discussion

haha quality! btw i like 6x9s they look good and are cheap and not bad sound either :-D

personally i can see what your saying but at the end of the day for people with hardly any cash there a great alternative and if set up properly they can sound great!!

a common mistake what people do is they put alot of bass through them which they dont really like and the trebel becomes distorted. a decent headunit or amp will do the trick.

iv got 6x9s and there amped soundly an produce a quality sound which has been compared to numerous systems.

Also Foxie was sayin that they are a thief magnet... which they CAN be but at the end of the day if someone sees u driving about playin loud music you are attracting attention 2 urself anyway, and there are people who will follow you 2 you are house, wait for you 2 go bed and completely rob u up!!

Just a quick question:

I don't give enough of a shit about my sound to put any effort in, but I still want kinda good sound for not much money/effort. I just want to know if I bodge a shit amp, nice front speakers, and a couple small subs into my boot, without anything else, would it sound ok? And would there be any specific tweaking to do? (Apart from balance and bass shit, that's just preferance, i'll adjust that when it's set up).

Right now I have the Amp, half-decent pioneer 6"'s and a nice-ish head unit. I've finished wiring in the amp but before I powered it on I also wanted to make sure that I don't have to set specific fuses or whatever depending on my speakers. The subs will come in a couple days..

Plus, considering how shit the subs will be, I was thinking of running them on a crossover with some tweeters? So basically turning them into some really big shit 6x9's.

Thoughts on my awful ideas?

Note:

I do actually have a set of matching Pioneer 6x9's but after reading a couple posts I think maybe I should throw them infront of a speeding truck.
