1.05 AEV, Multiple FUEL ISSUES

Hi everyone!

I've not long had this VW polo. It's a 3 door, 1995 N reg with the 1.05 single point injection AEV engine in.

Bought it 2 months ago as a non runner and have since put a new engine in. The engine itself seems to run fine and doesn't eat up any water or oil.

The car seems to loose petrol when it is stopped. Last night when I parked, I had just under 1/4 tank. This morning when I started it, the needle was pretty much on empty but rose to about 1/16 tank when a bit warmer. I inspected the road under the car but found no petrol marks and I've visually inspected the bottom of the tank but couldn't see any obvious holes.

I had thought that I was getting bad fuel consumption when running it around town but I think it just looses fuel when its stopped. When doing a constant run, the MPG goes right up.

I also get an overwhelming smell of petrol inside the car when stopped in traffic etc or when I turn the heater on (the smell isnt as bad with cool air, much worse with the heater).

I've also noticed that when cruising down a hill, the accelerator seems to have a mind of its own and will rise and fall by about an inch of its own accord under my foot...I dont know if this is normal in "modern cars" with electronic control? The only other vehicles I've driven regular are an '89 LR Defender and a '79 MGB so I really dont get all this fancy electric business.
