one thing i will say tho is that some how chopping the back of has kinda made those rear arches work :?

I want to see if hes going to put some sheet metal on the bars welded between the arces, and Joe tells me hes getting it SVA tested next month, weather it passes or not is another matter!

Please I'm intereseted to know where Joe has done bad workmanship on this car?

he might struggle a little bit there mate seens as there is no class for a Modified Commercial, which this will fall into. this has been covered time and time again on retro rides. if he does take it for a test he risks loosing his log book until it's passed a test to prove it's roadworthyness... which it can't do because there is no class for it.

tbh i wish there was because a polo loon tuned into a pick up works really well proportion wise and it's some thing i'd love to do, but alas, until a test is put in place for them it's a no go

Ok well my meaning was probably more along the lines of why has he just gone mad with a pair of spray cans rather than just finishing it nicely, its not even like it's forced rat or anything it's just an inconsistent mess? Also the welds haven't been nicely smoothed off to give a tidy finish either and those arches whilst being kind of cool aren't made to look like they belong on the car in any way, wouldn't even a little smoothing of the transition from car to arch have been sensible to tie it into the lines of the car a bit? The idea for the car is great an could look insanely good but it's just all done to look rough not nice.

I'll eat my own leg if this passes an SVA

I know about the modified commerical, read about it loads on retrorides to,

I'm only saying what he told me about it, He said on another forum about the amount of strength its had added to it.

I expect if it rolled over in an accident it would fair better than a standard mk3 coupe as its got the same sort of bracing in as a banger racing car.

All we can do is wait and see if it does pass but who knows!

That could be an interesting sight...would you detach it first?

I think you've missed the whole point of this car!

Knowing joe its not finished yet anyway, who knows whats in store for it yet

Sorry but what are you trying to achieve with what you are doing to this car?

If he takes it for a test and it fails... surely he wont be able to take it back?

That or they wont allow him to have the logbook back?

Ask Joe whos car this is not mine, i just post the pictures for him! If you read the first post it will explain why he dosn't

Your guess is as good as mine!

Hell yeah prefer it now! Rear bars and stuff kinda makes me want to see it raised on massive tyres.,.

But please at least get it road-legal (IVA?) :S

Edit; a load of posts appeared, shame if it wouldn't pass.

haha ratta is a crazy fooker.

isn't he running it for a year then scrapping it when the mot runs out? heard so many different things to do with what he's doing lol

In that case Joe you'll know yourself that it isn't a question of how much bracing has been done or how good the work is. It can't pass the test cause there isn't one for this type of car.

Yep they keep your log book, the only way to tell if he does take this for a test is if in a month or so's time its wearing different plates

to be honest boys and girls, what this lad does with his own car, is his own business, just because he doesnt comply with the usuall trend doesnt mean its bad, and just because its different doesnt mean its good, but its all about personal taste.

to anyone here who says its a sin to do this to a car, that this is not what should be done to it, ask youself, is your own car bog standard? exactly as it was when it came out of the factory, the way VW built the car and intended it to be??if not, dont even bother wrting a post stateing that its shit..

to be honest to me its more of a sculpture, a piece of art work, not everyone will like, but if you dont have the balls to actualy get up and complete a project of your own, dont waste your own time writing abuse on this or anyone elses build thread..

that is all

Personally I think his motor is cool. He's being brave with it and I've got a lot of respect for that.

Everyone is entitled to like something or not but ultimately we are all in the same game and we should all respect that. I don't like lexus lights or oversmoothed bumpers on 6ns but I'm not gonna give someone shit if they do as we're all free to like what we like and mod our cars as we choose?

to anyone here who says its a sin to do this to a car, that this is not what should be done to it, ask youself, is your own car bog standard?

then ask vosa if its a sin to do what he has done to this car and they will say "yes"

after that ask the police if its a sin for him to be driving this car on the road after he's done this and they will say "yes"

then finally ask his insurance if they are even a aware of him doing this, i doubt the answer would be yes as in the eyes of the law this car shouldn't be on the road.

so your argument of "what this lad does with his own car, is his own business" couldn't be any more wrong if you tried. it is all of our business when people like this are pushing up all of our insurance by driving illegally modified cars around with invalid insurance.

besides when some one posts up and asks for opinions on their car that is exactly what they will get. the first thread about this on here started by ratter he did just that, and when people gave their opinions on his work (iirc him smoothing his rear window to his boot lid with filler was a particular talking point  ), he chucked his toys out of the pram, stopped posting on here and started taking cheap shots at this site on other sites, yet he asked for peoples opinions? i honestly don't understand that mentality? especially when the car in question is 'rat look' meaning its meant to look shit, so why get upset when some one then points out that it looks shit? surely that is the best compliment you could pay to it? :?

i don't think this car is all bad, some things i do like and i have said i like, others i don't and i've done the same. i'm not going to only mention the things i like on a car because the owner can't take criticism, if you ask for my opinion don't acted shocked when you get it. if you didn't want opinions then i don't see why you would post some thing up?

What a mug, it's a cool take on the polo and I take my hat off to him for it, but for f***sake he needs to get it legal.

Edited by runforrestrun

i'm not on about his arches, have you missed the part of the thread where he chopped the rear of the car off?

vosa won't actually say it's not roadworthy as there isn't a test to test a car that has been turned into a pick up for road worthiness, what they will do is take his log book off him until he gets it tested, which he can't due to the lack of test for this sort of mod. it's been very well documented on the retro rides forum with people who are experts in that field confirming that you can't legally do that to a car and it be roadworthy. the only way round it is to either put it on a chassis from a car that has a separate chassis, or to put it in to some other test (can't think of the name for it now) but this test costs some thing like £8k

if he phones up his insurance and tells them he's turned it into a pick up i'd be fucking amazed if they didn't ask for proof that it's been done properly in the form of a cert from vosa, which again it can't get due to there not being a test for it. even if they did just accept his word that it was done well and every thing was in order, if he did have a crash it would probably take their investigator less than a few seconds to find out it doesn't actually have the paper work needed and therefore shouldn't be on the road, do you think they will still pay out any cost to anyone involved then?

you've edited your post, now my reply seems like i'm just aimlessly ranting about why it can't be legal

just to explain 'runforestrun' seemed to get the wrong end of the stick so i was just going into detail about why it can't legally go back on the road to try and clear it up, i wasn't just aimlessly ranting about it

sorry dude! I edited my post and hoped no-one had read it as I did miss out the whole of one of the pages which answered my questions (sort of).

If VOSA won't agree to him 'modifying' the shell, (which seems silly to me) can he not resubmit the whole car as a Q plate? There must be a few people in the same boat as him. I wonder how this guy managed it for example http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/2728418.htm
