Pics of my mk3 GT when i went out with Rich in his GTi to get some quick snaps.

Boring part to anyone interested.

First Mk3 i have owned so here it is. Had a mk2 coupe which i put a GT engine a while back which some of you may remember.

To outline, I bought a 70,000 mile Calypso green (non sunroof which i love) GT which was standard as they come and have done some things to it.

Engine:

New timing belt,

Water pump,

Alty belt,

Spark plugs,

HT Leads,

Distributer cap,

Rotor arm,

Filters changed,

Oil changed,

Coolant changed,

Drilled airbox,

Performance panel filter fitted,

Charcoal canister removed,

De-wedged throttle body,

Exhaust renewed.

Suspension and brakes:

Lowered 80mm at the front and 50mm at the rear using uprated shocks and springs,

New top mounts,

New steering arms both sides,

New track control arms both sides,

New wheel bearings at the rear on both sides,

Rear brakes were a tad seized so got them unstuck,

G40 vented brakes.

Wheels and tyres:

VW Golf GTi steel wheels 14" by 6" minto with the silver caps. I put 175/50/14 tyres on to retain similar rolling radius but get rid of the balloon tyres. Fully balanced with all the balance weights hidden on the inside so not to spoil the look of them.

Interior and ICE:

Broken indicator stalks changed for new ones and any of the switches on which the bulbs had died in have been changed,

280mm (11") steering wheel and momo boss (fake momo team looks almost identical and was so much cheaper, couldn't justify the momo price),

Black carpets (not yet fitted as not got round to cleaning them properly yet),

Front seats have been changed to black corrado VR6 ones,

Rear seats will be corrado ones eventually when i can be bothered swapping the rear seats foam across.

Gear gaitor changed for the rubber one (don't know why i prefer the look of that one?),

Grimey stickers removed from the rear window (was so hard to get these off, baked on by the years),

Tax disc holder changed for simple one,

JVC chameleon headunit fitted (so cool and retro but such a good unit, see vids on youtube),

Uprated speakers (will be run through an amp when i change the carpet so i can run/hide the wiring).

Exterior:

Clear front indicators,

Clear Side Repeaters,

Headlights washed and new bulbs put in,

Rear drivers side rear light changed for one imported from germany so i have two reverse lights making the rear symmetrical everyone gets rid of reverse so thought i'd be different,

Rear wiper removed,

Debadged front grill,

Chrome door handle inserts,

Red stripe in bumpers has been changed to new,

Rear badges taken off and sanded the silver off them with fine paper so they are now black,

Rear number plate black plastic surround decal has been changed for a new one,

Pressed UK font plates front and rear,

New wing mirrors either side with unbroken/marked glass or any plastic missing (one still needs fitting),

Stickers added on side of the car to cover up badly scratched areas until i decide what to do about it. Buffed it out as much as possible but they quite were deep and so didn't come out fully (i don't hate stickers as much as some).

Paint work has been polished in other areas and managed to get out a lot of the smaller scratches.

Things to do:

Engine tweaks such as chip, 4 branch etc etc. Just the usual. Pulls and drives awesome now anyways and you can tell it has never been raged.

Few small rust blobs to sort (standard mk3),

Rear seat situation,

Spacers on the rear.

Hope you all appreciate that i tried to keep the nice look of the mk3 and just make the best of the original.

Dont usually like this colour, but it does look awesome, maybe a real nice set of wheels to set the car really off.

Until some wheels come up that i really like and will suit the car these will be staying. They make the car look so clean and almost standard. Plus the car handles so nice on them as when i put small wide wheels on my old mk2 i thought it made the handling worse. Plus got other things my money has to go on at the moment :-)

Thanks for the comment. Colour didn't do much for me in the first place but it has grown on me.

that looks very nice not usually a calypso green man but yours looks right and the steels suit it really well i think.

would loose the stickers :p but I'm not a sticker man.

What did you use for the red strip on the bumpers? My Calypso Green Loon would look so good like this!!

Red stripe in the bumper is red trim tape and can be had at most motor factors. Easy to apply and freshens it up a treat.

Stickers serve a purpose. There were some pretty deep scratches to that area on both sides of the car strange. So i used some G3 to try and get them out but it was never going to be as they were fair deep. So wanged some stickers on for the time being until i decide what to do about it.

For the money and ease to work on i think the GT is pretty hard to beat.

That colour is mint same as my MK3 now I know what my car could look like if it was looking mint.

Wheels are a good choice, good choice in tyre size too.

Cheers guys. Wheels that look good on mk3's are a difficult one for me and with 13" wheels unless you really get it low enough i just think they look lost. With the roads being gash round here i went for these steels and i think they look just right and even better in the metal.

1" band on the rear or a set of 20mm spacers would make them look a lot better though.

Pics were done on Rich's standard digicam as the SLR i brought along was without my memory card BOO!

Broken drivers side wing mirror now replaced with a spanking one. 7.3k chip put in which is better. Just a few more bits and bobs and i'm done :-)

can you tell a difference with the chip in dude? been thinking about one to iron out the curves, mines a bit dead at some points when i want to accelerate.

Cheers everyone. She has her age blemishes but nothing a bit of time and effort can't sort out.

The chip is a definate improvment. I didn't want the 8k rev limit one again as i had this in my mk2 with a GT engine and i feel as if the engine doesn't need to see that kind of pain and it almost seemed to lose something.

The one i have fitted to this is a 7.3k rev limit one and is much better and just seems to pull throughout the rev range a bit better and smoother acceleration. Best part about it though. When on a spirited drive with the old standard chip i used more fuel than i do now with this chip even though improved performance. Win win. Not a miracle chip but for the £40 you cannot go wrong. The one i have is a poloace one.

MOT this week at some point. Need to do a few bits before i take it in. Namely front brakes as the discs are warped and were like this when i got it. Got some G40 discs pads and calipers to go on though so that should sort that.

How is the GT barney? Any progress made? Looks real tidy in these shots!

Chip put on. 4 branch arrived yesterday. In for its MOT today and G40 brakes with a brake system flush. So at least it will come to a stop now. New tyre on one of the rear wheels as some nice person decided to slash it. Someone also kicked a dent in the front wing that will ahve to be removed (not damaged paint). Trouble is the drivers side wing is a bit shonky on the condition front and having a dent repaired on it almost seems silly as it ideally needs swapping.

Put a klaxon horn on (so fun to scare people) and wired it into a seperate switch on the dash for use at passengers discretion and means i retain my original horn and the klaxon can be removed easy as pie.

That is all on the update front. Give me a call this weekend Sam. I'll come over and we'll go for some country lane fun.
