Enthusiast owned eh?!

Can you grab a pic of the new hangers for the backbox when you get a chance please buddy?

What you mean? Deviance did it some real justice and the guy i bought it from hadn't owned it long so whoever had it between those two didn't do it any justice at all. I just hate being lied to when buying a car. Being honest is so impirtant in a car sale but he knew i was coming from a long way off so just 'failed' to mention things that were definitely up with it. I sold my estate to a guy from Swindon and after being very honest about everything he is very happy and i would be ashamed to sell something otherwise.

I'll get a pic of the hanger as soon as i can. Had a quick look and it is very simple but holds so stable. Much more heavy duty rubber mount incorporated too.

Cheers mush :-) Broken drivers side wing mirror now replaced with a spanking one. 7.3k chip put in which is better. Just a few more bits and bobs and i'm done :-)

It was pretty rotten when I got it to be honest!

Both front wings were nackered, this is the nearside wing,

180694_10150092919650816_507410815_61751

the offside was the same!

229635_10150165994415816_507410815_67155

All around the filler cap was rotten, and where the bend in the filler neck is along the sill was as well. I had a mate weld some new bits in, then spray the whole car.

Paint wasn't perfect (imo) but good enough for a 20 year old car.

I'm sure Barney will keep it up together now, the guy I sold it to seemed a pretty serious buyer so I doubt he neglected it (I could be wrong though!)

@ Deviance. At some point this car took some serious pain since you had it man. Arch trims were hididng a whole host of rust as you said but i like the paint job. You did an excellent job on the body. Shame someone fooked the rear arches :-( Think it may have been the 8j et0 wheel with balloon tyres on that fooked them up. Anyway i am tidying the rear arches up now and getting all the GT trim back on (although ill be making sure they stay clean underneath).

It was how badly the car drove that led me to the fact that it had been mistreated. It was without a shadow of a doubt the worst car i have ever driven. The power cable from the alternator had been cable tied to the steering rack (recently) aswell and it was slowly rubbing through. The doorcards were all snapped and fooked round the tops and lots of trim was missing.

It's a great car just needed some love to bring it back to life.

Summer will be serious though

Gt and g40 centre and rear exhaust sections are the same by the way.

centre box bore entry/exit is similar - but they are not the same parts... ou get a vag stock gt rear box and stock g40 box, the g40 is bigger size and much sturdier made!

Air fair do's! The interior was perfect when I sold it, a little wear on the steering wheel as it was suede, and the rear bench had 2 splits at the top, apart from that it was all good!

Shame to see it has been mistreated after I sold it :(

Anyway, keep up the good work, should look perfect with the trim set on! I have the sill trims if you're after some!

YES! so glad you bought this back.

It passed hands so many times after you i was gutted. Had a feeling if it was such a 'Great' car then it wouldnt have been sold on so many times.

Good to see it back to an OEM+ level, looked awful on the classics.

Props to you and Deviance for giving it proper maintenance. Still think the mk2 GT was the best car youve owned :ninja:

Well at the weekend I gave the car a bit of a rub down, also cleaned and sealed the wheels with poorboys wheel sealant (i wanted to eat it  ), put some OEM alarm stickers on it and started cleaning the rear arches ready for some love and the arch trim set fitting (just waiting on some bits and bobs).

Hope you all approve:

Things to do and change:

Red stripe rear bumper.

Change gearknob.

Refit bootlid as there is a slight odd panel gap.

New mirrors :ninja:

Fit the GT trim set.

Re-wrap entire engine loom, clean/paint some components to tidy.

Sorry the pics are poor quality phone pics but its all i had at my disposal. Rear window is misty as i scrubbed inside too. No pics of drivers side really as it was close to my wall and light was bad (but it's as clean as the passenger side).

Looking good!

If you want to sell the steering wheel let me know as i wouldn't mind it back lol. Also got the standard gearknob if you want it?

  • Author

I'll let you know first if i decide to get rid of the steering wheel. Have been looking at some other things in that department so i will let you know. It is a very nice wheel to drive with :-)

If you have the standard Gearnob that would be awesome. Pm me a price and some details or whatever.

ooooshtt didnt realise this was yours :o saw you going through bingley on bonfire night looked amazing nearly creamedd! So tidy and will be nice to flash at another mk3 local :)

Yeah its a weird one alright.

I don't really mind as i have always wanted a clean silver mk3 and this is almost silver but with a hint of grandma green :-)

No new updates. Awaiting for my vag rivets and some 25mm foam tape so i can attach all the GT trim back on.

poorboys wheel sealant (i wanted to eat it  )

 Nom Nom Nom! Smells so good :-)

Should definitely come with a warning. It does look and smell too tasty to be smearing all over your car parts.

Can tell your back in love.... or if anyones in love with a car as they take pointless random pics at the most random times :p

Ha, i don't know about love but i am quite fond. You have to have a certain amount love for old cars otherwise you would just get sick of them.

Thought it looked quite nice sat there so took a dismal, wintery shot. See me parking at the far end of the carpark to avoid annoying dentage, good exercise too as i have to walk miles to where i am going

So miniature update. Swapped wheels with devience so he could have his dished sparco back and i got a momo team 300. Pleased as i think goes with the mk3 polo dash perfectly. Also added something else :-) .... works a treat.

Was worried it would sit too close to my body with the snap off and the momo boss but it is no closer than it was with the dished sparco wheel.

Also wanged a new clutch cable on and traced my coolant leak.... to the water pump. New pump and belt time.

I've got to stop following your thread so closely  wheel looks great, isent it abit of a ballache getting to the stalks with them no longer being at the extension of a finger?

I've got long fingers :-p

Nah you get used to it pretty much instantly, not a problem for me in the slightest.

Arches and associated bits will be on in the very near future.

I didn't realize you were updating the thread, I absolutely loved this GT when deviance had it and its changed a lot but I love it the same amount if not more.

Good call on the mirrors too and I am going to road trip to Bradford next month to try the wheel place for myself, they look fresh!

  • Author

Cheers man.

The look of the mirrors is good in person. The problem with them is that the ball joint where they attach at the base ha become worn and loose so when you drive they flop down and it was a right pain in the ass. No way of tightening them as it is the actual ball joint that has gone soft. Put a dab of quick steel on them to hold them in place until i swap to the other mirrors i am going to try out.

Nothing much changed here but had a coolant level issue....

Changed the header tank and cap and it did nothing. Had it tested for the headgasket but it was fine there. Went to change the clutch cable and saw coolant all over the left hand side of the sump....waterpump had shat itself. Changed the pump and the belt (and fresh G12) plus some other service parts such as the dizzy cap, arm, plugs and it is still running a bit odd. Got a few more sensors to change and then going to garage on Monday for a full health check and anything it needs sorting out. Will be running 100% i damn well guarnetee it

Also got a poly engine mount for the rear engine mount which i will fit. Arch, sill and side trims will go back on the car this weekend. Perfect lovely GT'ness will be achieved. I'll probably sell it then knowing me

Make sure you get photo's when you have put the plastics back on!

Make sure you get photo's when you have put the plastics back on!

Will do for sure. I think they are a necessary item on GT's and G40's. They just look right.

Quick update....

Changed the waterpump and timing belt and yet still the coolant was dropping. In for a quick leak down test and the headgasket has had it :-D

All good though. Always nice to have a nice bit of a head refresh. Being sent off Friday for a full pressure/crack test and skimming and then will be built back up with genuine gaskets and should be nice and reliable for a while then

These cars look after you as well as you look after them so following this it should be treating me like a prince.
