To be honest, until the tests got stupidly complex, they'd got it right with bikes. Limit on power and passenger until you've been on the road a while.

I see the point to limiting engine size to an extent, but to be fair, if the drivers a knob it doesn't matter, you can still get 60 in the wet in a 1.0 (eventually) therefore they can still think they are world's best driver and slide off a roundabout.

Just one of those things where innocent drivers half the time get the worst of it, I've been in cars with some idiots doing 100+ on back roads, never again.

I do think that nearly everyone drives like an idiot just after passing their test. I certainly drive a lot slower now than I did a year ago, and most of my mates do as well. I crashed into the back of one of my mates about 2 months after passing cos I locked my brakes up and slid into him, I know how to deal with that situation now.

When I do fancy driving fast now though, at least I have some idea of what I'm doing, I could still crash easily enough, but I'd like to think I would have more chance of controlling a slide or something now than when I'd just passed.

I think all new drivers should have to drive a slammed car, would teach them to drive slower, and driving a bouncy car would get them used to it sliding about a bit.

Yeah i drive considerably slow if I'm honest, i just put my foot down occasionally when there is a clear wide road.

I had enough little incidents in my first 2 years of driving to learn from my mistakes.

One of my mates got killed in a head on smash because some idiot coming the other way, couldnt be bothered to slow down for a van he was coming up behind so pulled out to go round right into the path of my mate driving the other way. It was dark and wet and visiblity wasnt great!

I think its all relative, if they did it like bikes it would be much better.

BUT....it all comes down to respecting what you own, a lot of cheap cars get killed because people just think ohh well if i bend it i'll just buy a new one.

I put loads of time and effort into my 16v even though it only cost me 1k, drove it like a tool sometimes but respected it 99% of the time and I never even came close to having a knock.

If i was to even try and drive stupidly in the ibiza i'd end up round a tree, most people say dont get big power until you can drive, I had 240bhp at 19 and if I respect what i have and the capabilities of it then all is good. There is a time and place for fast driving and its not very often.

Common sense is what most of the new drivers dont have.

The UK's driving test is a load of ball shit! the driving instructors only teach you how to drive a car and not how to control a car.

In Finland, the car driver's training can be obtained either in a private driving school or given by a near relative who has a driver's licence. If the person is trained by a relative, the relative must obtain a special instructor's permit and have a car fitted and inspected with an extra set of brake pedals for the front passenger. The training for B class licence requires 30 hours of instructed driving, including a spell on a slippery driving course, and 20 theory lessons. After this, the person must pass a computerized theory test and a driving test in city traffic with a minimum length of 30 minutes. C class training is similar, but longer.

The initial license is issued for two years. During this time, the new driver may receive a maximum of two traffic fines in total. If the number of fines is exceeded, the license is revoked and the driver is required to re-take the exam. Even with one fine, the interim period may be extended for a maximum of two years. During the interim period, the new driver must pass a short refresher course, which includes a slippery driving course, and participate in dark time driving training, unless this was part of the initial training. (Finnish lighting conditions prevent the dark time training during summer.)

I think in this country we should have 3 tests we should have to pass to be able to drive a car!

1. normal road conditions driving test

2. car control test (day course)

3. theory test on both previous tests

And we should be graded on our test results (mainly the car control test) as to how powerful of a car we can drive so if you are a good driver you should not have a problem at getting the highest grade and being able to drive any car you like money permitting. but if you suck your stuck with 1L power! but you only need to retake the car control test latter after some driving experience to upgrade!

but it not just 17 year olds driving bad my mates 31 and drives like an arse flat out everywear.He had NISSAN 200SX for 1 hour 45 mins spent £4500 on it drove it from london with no isurn got 15 mins from home span it of a roundbout hit a cotswould stone wall ie dead car plus £3000 for the wall

I personally think it is down the the Driver and the people he is with, i passed at the beginning of last November and living in the Yorkshire dales the roads arent the best round that year and with growing up around a family who drives everywhere i knew what the roads were like and knew that i needed to take it slow and be smooth on the ice, i was doing about 35 in a 60 zone about a week after they stopped gritting and it brightened up and it was dark, my back end slid out on slush i corrected it, but i over steered a little bit and i slid a long way down the road then down a verge and under a fence, i really regret going out that night and now my car is gouged to hell (God dman barb wire >.<), i was very lucky there wasn't a car coming the other way and noone was injured... well except form the polo :p

Now i drive with alot more wisdom and care and all my friends say the same that i drive A LOT more carefully and they feel safe in a car with me.

One of my mates passed his test on the Monday had a 1.9 focus bought for him by his father and on the Friday night he got lashed for passing his test and then decided to drink drive about 100m(easy walking distance) and got nicked and was over double the limit and because of his rich background ended up with only a 8month ban :/ and 2 months pf that rehab stuff..

my mother says that the insurance company's should do it as a reward scheme, you have no claims on your first year and you get half your premium back and your 1 years bonus, i know it sounds daft but in some sense it could work but then again...

I'm going to try and sort out getting some advanced driving certificates :) hopefully it will lower my insurance. as its 2.6k fully comp as me as the named driver on my 1.4 6n2 and for my second year with 1 NCB its 2.7k and the pass plus puts it up to 2.8k :/ really confused on how the pass plus puts it up :/

Where do i start with this.. Guy i know deliberatly crashed into a roundabout with a car full. Another into a bollard and a old man on a bike (admittidly the old man on this bike saw him coming and it was a deliberate attack on my friend in his car) another mate crashed into about 3 lamposts and 2 cars (she doesnt have a year driving experience yet) All withing first week -> first 6months driving. *rolls eyes*

Lass by me who passed recently driving along with her mate on tuesday i think it was, overtook the car infront and ended up in a head on accident.

Killed the 66year old woman driver in the other car, shes in a bad way in hospital and her passanger has been released from hospital now!

Seems to have shocked alot of people in the area, hopefully nock some sence into the dickhead drivers about.

I really dont know how i survived 1992. My car was a beige '83 Escort 1.3L, and mates had the same plus a GL and Ghia, Nova 1.2 loon, Triumph 1.3 Acclaim, Austin Montego 1.6 HL, several modified minis, MK1 Sierra 1.6 etc.

All on remould tyres,with ultra skinny plastic steering wheels.

Not an N-cap star between them, no ABS, no airbags, no other weighty bullshit that gave us a false sense of security, no speed ramps, no cameras no one-way systems or traffic lights on roundabouts - just lots of jumping,wheel spinning, fish-tailing, smoke, blood and panel damage.

Fun and educational times - all with petrol at 46p a litre and 2x14w stereo's, it was epic fun,i kinda miss it,but it was only as good as it was because we were young,foolish immature and unwise.

It had snowed quite recently and there was still ice, needless to say he spun the car on a dual carriage way and it ended up sideways covering both of his lanes.. 2 of their mates were following shortly behind (speeding) and went straight into the drivers side of the Jag. This spun the Jag onto the other side of the carriage way, where the passenger side was then his by a car coming the other way, driven by a lad with his missus.

The driver of the Jag died, his passenger is paralysed, the 2 lads in the first car that hit the Jag needed facial and hand reconstruction, and the second car that hit them, the lad and girl, got away with just cuts and bruises..

So yeah, a pretty bad night.. car too fast for the lads experience, driving too fast and showing off, made worse by ice on the road, 1 life lost, another ruined, and 2 more completely innocent people could have came off much worse.

I feel sorry for the lads, no doubt, but so many innocent people die on the roads each day through no fault of their own, and this could have so easily been prevented..

Actually do wonder if everyone should hve to have a spell on a bike before they're allowed a car license. Thing with riding a bike is, you're constantly aware that if you crash into something, it hurts, so it makes you a far more careful car driver.

I rode a bike for 2 years before even setting foot in a car. I'm a hell of alot more aware than my mates. Like.. the other day i went bourmoth with my mates in there car, we were eading to a island and the driver never even noticed, if i never said stop he would have carried straight on into the back of the car waiting infront at the island, what makes it even worse is i was in the beck behind the driver. And i was still more aware!

yeah my mate had a ped for two years before his car and was a much better driver than i was when i first got in my car

It sure does hurt, broke my collarbone twice, wrist once and got the brake lever implanted into my thigh just above the knee on various bike 'offs'

I'm only 18

I currently don’t have a full licence although I've been out with plenty of mates and they tend to be heavy footed and boot it down country lanes.

Personally i wouldn’t be able to do it as I've put money in a car , insurance. EDIT: AND i dont have the confidence and trust in the car

Il admit if i was in a completely empty car park / private land id have some fun but not proper boot it so there is a risk of clipping a kerb , post or anything. If there’s anyone else in my car i wont be egged on by them as at the end of the day I'm responsible for the people in that car…..

I've seen plenty of people die in crashes , one down the road recently guy on the otherside of the road impressing his girlfriend. Wrong side of the road overtaking round a sharp bend , head on collision…… Police threw the book at him. Driving past it just said it all. Even on my side I would go round slowly and it’s a fast road…

ok then il tell you the full CORRECT story then.

its a sunday night on quite a hot spot for racing, had been parked up on an entrance to a transport yard for about half an hour on an island watching the goings on and talking to mates etc, we had noticed the black xtype jag that was giving it shit up and down the dual carridge way and round the islands aswel thought nothing of it though, by this time it was getting on to about quarter to 11 and i had work early so i decided to call it a night. on pulling off the island we noticed there was an old megane that had spun out, one looking back there was the jaguar coming accross the central resevation towards us, thats the last thing i remeber everything after that is a blank. it was the passenger in the jaguar that was killed not the driver and as for speeding i wasnt speeding i was doing about 35 40 mph as proven by the police.

A local lad was killed in a crash this week near where I live. Everyone hoons it down the dual carriageway he died on, to see how fast they can get before a bridge that goes over it. He died just after the bridge after going through a fence and hitting a tree at over 100mph. The engine was found 20ft from the car or something like that. He was in a seat leon, racing an Audi A4.

I've got to admit to having a lead right foot, but after being on motorbikes for 5 years prior to getting my car license I know the risks from the near misses and accident's i've had on motorbikes. Cars are alot more forgiving than motorbikes are if you make a small mistake! I stick to 30 and 40 limits though, as If I hit a child or something due to doing silly speeds in a built up area I couldn't live with myself. Mainly roads in the forest at dusk are the best for fast driving, no body about and all the horses are away from the roads.
