update atlast!

the beemer has been taking up all my time recently...

well the polo is now officially off the road for winter :(

but this means its time to strip the engine to have the bottom end fully lightened and balanced and also have the block honed and use the correct size rings this time!

while everything is in bits i also have a top fill radiator to fit and will be moving the washer bottle to the boot, so because you will be able to see alot more engine/gearbox it will all be getting a nice coat of black paint :)

plus i have also just ordered the following from philj:

rear poly top mounts

front poly topmounts (also camber adjustable)

rear poly beam bushes

full poly engine mount set

front shiny upper strut brace ;)

lots more to do over the next couple of months so will update as and when :)

had a quick play this afternoon and test fitted my mk1 golf top fill radiator, and it looks very neat!

plus its a few inches longer so uses the slightly wider mounting points but it was still a straight fit :)

oh hmm... looks like i might be getting a top fill rad! how much mate? Presume its a to order new thing? :D

it does look very nice :)

well i bought it off a mate who had it going spare and was just what i wanted, he only asked for what he paid which was £30 :)

  • Author
that it does mate, that it does!

I'll investigate the local trafford brakes later tonight. I'm expecting £150 ish knowing them :-/

it shouldnt be too much! this one is a valeo, so its not some spurious rubbish!

you will need a blanking plug for the old hose that used to attatch to the bottom of the header tank though, you can get them for a few quick off fleabay

  • Author

its just the cap from the original header tank

have a look on here for your hose stuff, its who i got all my stuff from but i visited the shop with a bag full of my old black hoses lol

clicky!!

a few bits have arrived over the pas few days:

10" fan to fit on top fill radiator (and it looks very neat once fitted i must say :))

phil j poly engine mounts (more stuff still to arrive)

alloy blanking plug for thermostat housing to old header tank hose

hopefully will have time this coming sunday/monday to get the block stripped and over to ben (popdragin) to be lightened and balanced

more powerzzzzz? Keep pics coming mate, everyone loves pics :D

oh there will be lots of pictures when i get a superlight knife edged crank, lightened flywheel and shaved rods and pistons back from ben ;)

sounds like your doing to yours what I've just done to mine mate with all the lightened, balanced stuff and rods and how much you having the pistons shaved by as there isnt alot on them you can take off the top if your skimming the standard afh pistons.

To be honest i couldnt tell you, ime just leaving it up to bens judgement as he does this sorta thing all day everyday to V8s :)

Have you got yours running yet then bud?

haha :ninja: cheers

yeah mines been running for a few weeks now finally and clocked up about 6-700 miles now on the carbs was running real rich for a start but slowly getting that sorted myself lol trial and error and the narrowband afr helps alot even though its not greatly accurate. i have a lightened balanced and knife edged crank, lightened and balanced flywheel, forged h beam conrods, baffled mk3 sump with mk3 oil pick up, windage tray all with new bearings and rings and the blockprofessionally honed before rebuilding. had it rolling road'd and it got 105 bhp at fly not good then found dizzy was destroyed inside and timing was everywhere and i had blocked all the air jets on the carbs next to the trumpets by accident with the ally plates i had fitted. also they only took it to 6500 rpm in 3rd and he said it had more but didnt want to risk the dizzy after he had fixed it welding the timing in a set place and the vac advance wasnt working, but god the noise of it at 6500rpm was immense i was just waiting for it to explode it was so loud and thought it must be at like 8 or 9k was surprised when he said thats only 6.5k

you having anything else done and list your weight saving after i think my crank was about 1kg lighter and my flywheel came back 6-700grams lighter. and the forged rods ended up being the same weight as standard so i lost at least 1.6kg of rotational weight.

  • Author

ime not sure of the before weights so you may have to help me with those, but i shall certainly be weight them when i get them back :)

how much did the forged rods and sump cost you?

man i still want starmags... i need a set in my life! found a set going for 190 on a website that sells all the jbw wheels (or w/e they are) there mini pcs though so would need wobble bolts. reckon its worth it?

forged rods were £300 and then i had to machine them thinner and rebush the little end from 20mm to 17mm as they are 1.8 20vt rods. so quite abit of machining on top of that which i did myself at work so depends if you can do it or whether you have to pay for it and the baffled sump i made my self i used a spare sump to make templates then cut these out of sheet steel 1.2mm thick and then drilled holes in them to aid some oil flow i still have templates and can make the plates for you to weld in for some money to cover material costs if you like mate.

Ok fair enough, i dont have the facilities to do the machining etc, but yeh the baffled sump plates sound good, as i have a welder friend who is sh*t hot! How much would you want for them? I take it you did research into where exactly you had to place the baffles?

well i had a spare oil pick up and pump too so sat them roughly where they sit in the sump then made cardboard templates of the shapes needed. then cut them out of sheet and welded them in and they dont need fully welding in just a few biggish tack welds on each bit as you dont want to distort the sump. Il get back to you and pm you about pric es mate may do a few and see if anyone else is interested. check my build thread i may have pics on there

what else is needed to run the mk3 sump then in the case? and why cant the mk4 sump be used?

mk4 sump can be used but my baffles are based on the mk3 sump as thats what i run and if you have a subframe you have to cut, alter and weld the mk4 sump so dont know if it would match up with the baffles then, and you need the mk3 oil pick up as the mk3 sump is shallower there is a thread somewhere maybe part of the afh conversion one, I'm not sure if I'm one of the only ones running the mk3 sump on the afh atm.
