Well i made a start this morning! First i pulled all the original engine bay loom/fusebox and compared it to the g40 loom so that i could lable everything up for future reference. The eagle eyed

oh yeh i sorted the diff issue aswell :)

Mate always loved your car,

why have you not gone standalone for timing with it? You have spent a small fortune on many performance areas!

Its the heart of the engine controlling it.

Its all really developing into a bit of a beast.

Nice work.

Because i dont understand electronics or how the hell to go about fitting it up, feel free to help me make a setup because i cant do it alone!

It's pretty simple, will cost about £300 + mapping unless you source bits from breakers etc

I've asked this question before, but then it all gets too technical and i get lost, i need standalone timing for dummies!

Well you ideally need:

Crank sensor + trigger wheel welded to outer pulley and a bracket for sensor

4 cylinder coil pack

EDIS module

Ignition ECU

Load sensing (original TPS sensor off bike carbs works)

Wiring loom.

Commonly used is ford bits (coil pack, EDIS module, crank sensor etc)

You could use the dizzy & hall sensor for the pickup but crank sensor maybe better.

Check out the "trigger wheels" website, they sell a kit for VW 8vs IIRC :)

Alot is available from a FORD edis unit... fiestas and escots or the 90's i believe had it.

The mini lads do it alot, iirc theres a HOW-TO on turbominis.

Once you have the bits, it's so simple, well mega jolt is anyway.

When setting up my friends fiesta it was literally a case of telling it what inputs you have, calibrating the TPS took seconds, then you can literally type the values in for your map, there's even base maps with the software, and the 16v golf one on there didn't seem a bad starting point.

So here's an example I took,

It's running at 1100rpm or whatever, with no throttle position and it's at 12 deg advanced IIRC.

Here's a base ignition map we started with, literally % throttle plotted against RPM

& a little vid testing the TPS after calibrating, ignore the back chat lol.

I was gonna fit it to mine but ITBs seem a better way to go

why do you do this to me!

i want to do it but i just dont have the foggiest when it comes to electrics :(

maybe i will do it over winter once the beemer is back on the road

orrrrr i might look into turbos....

turbo + ITB's + forged internals = fuck yeh!

lots to learn before taking that step though

well if youre going to turbo a standalone is must if you want to get a proper return.

I'm doing a standalone on my much more mild afh over the next ... well it will probably take me a year. Ill not be able to have half the fancy stuff your doing for good power.

My intention is to get a nice an revy afh bike carbed set up.

I'm planning on mid range pull rather than top end as it primarily a road car so i want the most i can coming out of bends or pulling up through the gears. But a map will make the most of whatever it there.

Ill sacrifice a little top end in the set up and also intake design - but that the choice I've taken.

Once I've progressed mine ill share my findings. I've done the trigger wheel part and got my vectra coil pack and leads, and my mate has sourced me a second hand standalone ecu - it hasnt got any fancy tricks like launch control etc but it will do the timing on mine.

I'm still loving your car - just thought the ecu would be next on the list ;)

Gt gearbox and LSD finally fitted!!

What a bastard of a job it turned out to be though...

The silly piece of metal that goes between the gearbox and block became distorted and was catching the back of the flywheel, so the gearbox came on and off about 5 times! Which to anyone with an afh'd mk2 you will know how hard that is!

But it was certainly worth it :) it just slingshots you out of roundabouts with zero wheelspin and brutal acceleration!

Only problem i still cant get to the bottom of is the bloody tappets tapping like crazy! Oil preasure reads fine though which is reading from the head, and i recently serviced the tappets aswell and still no different :(

Are they actually tappety or are you just paranoid? Both cams or?

you want to hear it mate!

definetly tappy

it just sounds like the rear cam to me using the screwdriver like a stephascope

Have you spoke to your engine builder? popdragon or who ever it is?

if you port a charger loads it makes a differant sound than a stock one, reckon it might just be noise out the inlet?

So today out of 6 runs i managed a best of 15.5171 at 87.2mph :)

not too shabby dude, get your slicks on and youll probably crack 90mph easy!

Hopefully!

Really happy with that though :)

Whats the next thing to break when i start running the slicks though?...

And after watching some of the proper competitiors i would smash loads of them looking at there times ;)

Edited by dubownerbilco

I'm surprised you wasn't faster tbh man!

Idk man well have to see lol. Just hope that your clutch holds up! Haha

Driveshaft snappy with slicks lol

Transmission failure is your main concern running slicks. So good job you binned the 6n box and rivetted crown wheel

Driveshaft snappy with slicks lol

Oh this matter, theres a uprated thicker driveshaft on clubg40.... not sleeved a new hardened thicker one. 8-)

Uprated driveshaft, 085 'box, 220bhp and 8" drag slicks is fine - as long as you treat CV joints as service items. Need a hardcore clutch though, drag slicks are properly grippy, so you can drop the clutch at high rpm meaning a stock clutch will just buzz its arse off.

You on organic or 4 paddle Andy? I imagine with it being a daily your on organic?
