Well i made a start this morning! First i pulled all the original engine bay loom/fusebox and compared it to the g40 loom so that i could lable everything up for future reference. The eagle eyed

Could try sorting out the mixture?

I will be doing that, but it still does not account for a missing 20-30bhp really

Find the problem I would. You've invested a fair wedge into this, and even if you are set on being rid of it, no one on here is going to buy it with its well documented problems. Unless of course you sell it for a tiny sum. Also, there's something satisfying about sorting a problem out for yourself. Who's to say building a big power G40 will give you the results you want, and won't have similar problems. If it was me, I'd get the engine running, learn from the experience, and if still set on selling, sell as a good power valver, thus making yourself some of that money back.

Easy for me to say with my reliable daily and frustrating project car!

Personally, i think it is.

Have you done any engine health checks?

Ime just loathed to put more money into it, ok I've got rid of the tapping but all thats has done is make me hear a rattle coming from the bottom end, i mean wtf, is this just never ending?!?!?

Depends how you mean 'health checks'?

Did you build the whole engine yourself by the way?

Health checks, i mean compression check, leakage test etc.

Yep everything has been done by me apart from machine work etc

I did a compression test not long after previous rebuild and it was fine, but that was 6 months ago

I'd health check it.

How did you run it in?

Do one again, just for the sake of it to rule out compression problems, maybe also research into doing a leakage test.

If that proves to be OK, i'd certainly try and get the mixture/timing optimized,

Even on a 1.3 8v jetta, running a tiny double choke weber DCD, getting the mixture as close as dammit makes a massive difference.

Will do,

Did a very gentle 500 miles no higher than 3000rpm and then gradually brought the revs up until 1000 miles

had a quick play this afternoon and test fitted my mk1 golf top fill radiator, and it looks very neat!

plus its a few inches longer so uses the slightly wider mounting points but it was still a straight fit :)

do you have pictures of how the rad mounts at the bottom ?

  • Author

straight into the holes like the standard one, except this rad was a little wider so it fits into some wider holes than the standard one does if you know what i mean

GEEEE

put it this way, if you had spent as much on a G40 as you had on this engine how good a spec would it of been?

do you have pictures of how the rad mounts at the bottom ?

o ok, my rad came today, so did you cut off the fan connector off the loom, and crimp on bullet connectors onto the positive and negative as the fan comes with bullet connectors.

as if iv not looked through this since i brought u that block up  tis such an epic car, and a great guy to match 8-)
