Well i made a start this morning! First i pulled all the original engine bay loom/fusebox and compared it to the g40 loom so that i could lable everything up for future reference. The eagle eyed

well mines quick enough tbh but couldnt get a bhp reading at boggs as its too low, only managed 20bhp. wheels where just spinnin over the rollers.

was thinking of the r1 carbs for my conversion but seeing as alot of people are running 600s I'm abit stuck nice vid though bud sounds saweet

well my splitter only just cleared the floor and it made 120bhp at the wheels

Sounds bloody nice!! :)

it made 120 at the wheels? it is just a standard 16v isn't it? I would take that with a smallish pinch of salt that would mean its 140ish at the flywheel which is a big increase over standard.

The place that did my set my carbs up had it reading 130 at the wheels (Circa 150 at the fly!) They thought the rollers were faulty so they tested them with some other cars they had there and they were reading as they should. Took it to a VW specialist and they said it might just produce that much power.

Obviously I was over the moon but couldn't totally believe it. Took it to Aldon at the CP RR day and it made 128 at the fly or 99ish at the wheels. So my bubble was burst. :) Took it back to the original place to get the timing done a few months later.. guess what its reading 130 at the wheels again!

It just goes to show how different RR give very different results. Personally I'm going with the 128 at the flywheel as its a believable result.

ahh fair enough, well no its not a standard afh, gasflowed head and stage 3 piper cams are inside :p,

but tbh 140-150 at the fly is about what i was expecting, but my exhaust is foobard atm so it is loosing alot of back pressure, so there will be a few mroe horses too free up when i get a system made up :)

Ahh in that case I take it back.. it sounds about right :)

well......

shes back off the road again with only 3 days left on the MOT which she didnt stand a cat in hells chance of passing due to the oil burning issues anyway :(

so plans for over the next month or two are as follows

repair this friggin ignition problem which it is suffering from at the moment

once i know that ^^ is repaired, ime taking the engine back to pieces again too replace the valve stem seals and quite possibly piston rings etc

if i need to replace the piston rings etc its time for more power :p

at the moment i am considering taking the bottom end totaly to pieces and doing big end bearings etc while i am down there but also replacing rods and pistons etc for upgraded jobbies :p

also balanced crank;

lightened flywheel

and when it goes back together...R1 carbs to top it all off instead of the cbr600's on at the moment

so heres a couple of pics now shes dumped at the side of my garden and feeling sorry for herself

(sorry for crap quality, using a rubbish phone atm)

well for those who are interested, i have sorted the ignition problem she had which a new distributor solved :) and also the cylinder head has been in pieces again and the piston rings are fine (phew) so i just replaced the valve stem seals and she isnt smokin like a good'un anymore :)

just need to get the exhaust patched up and shes good for the MOT, which has now run out...

Sounds good man, out of interest.. how did you find out that the rings were fine and it was just the valve guide seals? Has she passed MOT yet?

well i rebuilt it with the new seals and crossed my fingers and fortunately the smoking had stopped :) not passed MOT yet though as i am waiting for a friend to weld the exhaust back together :)

exhaust is getting welded tmoz so back on the road soon hopefully! :)

  • Author

welll it didnt end up getting welded, long story... so instead i have it booked in for a full system making up on thursday, straight through and a single box :p

well after spending £350 on the exhaust on thursday, it goes spectacularly fails the MOT today :(

out of a list of 9 fails the major ones are:

rotting on sill around drivers seatbelt anchor point

emissions are double the limit

front driver side brake pipe needs replacing

the rest is just superficial, but still gutted :(

Shame about the MOT fail - I've enjoyed following your build. The Sill's probably going to be the biggest headache to fix though, to get some idea of how bad it is, remove the drivers rear door card and peer down with a torch, you'll probably notice the steel pipe has gone paper thin and carefully feel down toward the sill and gently press the inner sills (dont go mad, you'll cut yourself on the jagged steel). I've repaired a few mk1's in this area and it's no fun unfortunately.

Do-able though with a mig welder and some sheet steel...

thanks for the vote of confidence :(

i know a few welders who are s**t hot so should be able to get it sorted fairly soon :)

Don't get me wrong - sure you'll sort it out, well worth the effort and the weakest area of the mk2 shell.

everythings already in hand :) bought new wheel bearings today to fit tomorow, got a welder coming round to check out the rust, and need to book in another sesh at bogg bro's and hire a trailer shortly

got to get it done now though as me and a couple of friends are booking a track day at cadwell park on 4th of december shortly :p
