    well today i have picked up a G40 engine. pictures and more details to follow tomorrow, ime so happy its unbelievable!!

    Well i made a start this morning! First i pulled all the original engine bay loom/fusebox and compared it to the g40 loom so that i could lable everything up for future reference. The eagle eyed

I think the universal ebay (small) jobbies are 550 not 430. depth and height are the same 140x65

Max - its not really like a mk2f, as the mk2 has the valance and not much airflow. the only airflow the radiator will now get is what comes through the intercooler. At least the mk2f has the option of mounting the intercooler low and still allowing radiator flow through the grill.

Standard g40 intercooler is an option on AWT eaton setups - you just run it backwards, i think there is a photo of that on my build thread.

You can use pressure drops in your system as a point of gaining an advantage but in this layout i think its going to struggle to fit so it wont be a problem.

The eaton charger itself is a very efficient charger but it is not an air compressor- it is an air mover and as such gets bloody hot- its close proximity to the exhaust makes it worse. i ran a charge cooler early on for my project and i tell you what it worked bloody amazing until you got into traffic and then it went tits up.

ime going to sound like a total dumbass here but charge coolers and intercoolers? i always thought it was the same thing?

A charge cooler is a water to air heat exchanger. An intercooler is an air to air heat exchanger. as you can probably work out from that - the charge cooler is cooled by water, it does this in the following way.

Air enters a chamber with extended surface areas (fins) attached like an intercooler, BUT instead of air blowing over the fins like in an intercooler the charhe cooler is surrounded in a jacket which contains water. This water is pumped round in a system similar to your engine cooling system. The charge cooler has water fed to it from a radiator placed on the front of the car (this can be thinner - making it easier to fit) the water is drawn through the charge cooler via a pump. the pump has a reservoir placed just after it and then round to the radiator.

It is a great way of lowering inlet temperatures where you have confined spaces. BUT it has advantages and disadvantages.

Advantages

1 - Water takes more heat energy to warm up than air! so your boost temperatures are lowered!

2 - you can pack the system with icy water (filtered) for a dyno run (reservoir size limits this) so you can get really low inlet temps.

3 - space can be tailered to suit, i used an air con rad at first, then used a motorcycle rad which fitted where the existing G40 intercooler fitted.

Disadvantages

1 - cost, initial setup can be high - but bargains can be had!

2 - The biggest drawback was traffic. As water requires more energy to heat up, it also takes longer to cool. so if you are sat in traffic and that water gets hot you are going to have high boost temps until you have significantly lowered the water temp.

Could you not use a small fan to cool the charge cooler rad when in traffic? Makes packaging in an already tight space a challenge I guess but could solve the problem

The problem isnt the actual cooling down - its the time/energy disapation. Go boil a cup of water and blow on it until it cools down, it will take a long time. i used a fan, but as in your cooling system for the engine it takes time. How many times have you got out of your car and the fan has still been going after you walk away.

The intercooler does not have this problem as the heat is vented directly to atmosphere.

Your keen!? Been working so inhavent had any free time, will be getting some hours in on monday hopefully.

Only things i have got done is removing the fuel tank so i can wire brush and paint it and also removing the old fuel lines etc. i also went and collected a mk3 intank pump and sender and also the external pump/filter/swirl pot and mounting plate so those need to be fitted soon.

Any ideas what the best thing is to paint the tank in?

Por15 or epoxy mastic.

I already have aload of tetraseal i could use or is that no good?

Is that the underseal sort of stuff?

Doesnt really cure properly?

If so, id lob it in the bin, horrible stuff.

Yeh thats the stuff! Already painted my inner arches with it...

I did my inner arches in waxoil paint (similar to tetraseal I think) and I wish I hadn't dirt just sticks to it and it looks so messy. eventually I want to scrape it all off and stone ship it instead. Be a dirty bastard job though.

epoxy mastic is the way forward = jotun jotamastic can be had cheap off ebay

dries rock hard , isnt that fussy on prep , can be left as is or overpainted

How does the size compare with the polo one? It's not abut whether it fits but also will it be efficient enough?

Well i am under the impression that although it will be smaller it will have a deeper core to make up for it which so that should even it out?

Also i got underneath the car today to look for the fuel pump mounts which i was assured mk2's do have. But i cant see any! I dont know if this has anything to do with it being a saloon?? The spare wheel well looks to be offset to the drivers side which means the pump cant be mounted in the free space as it is in a mk3. Can anyone shed any light on this?

All mk2/mk2f spare wheel wells are offset.

My G reg mk2 coupe had the 3 mounting point. basically just threads pointing down. It could be a saloon thing.. :-/ or they've just rusted off..

Hmm i only quickly looked while it was pissing it down this morning, will have a better look with the torch tomorow night after work! I found a picture of a pump under a mk2 which helps abit:
