should i go back to afh and bike carbs?.... really missing driving an old car now, i know the sx is mid 90's but it just doesnt scratch that retro itch. i love drifing and i dont intend on getting rid of the sx but i would really like to daily the polo again! :)

only really you can answer that but AFH on bike carbs is easy and a great engine. :)

i did really enjoy driving the car when it had the afh fitted and my boost needs have been satisfied by the s14 now. just need to find someone who wants this lot!

finally got around to fitting the bonnet catches today! drilling into the bonnet was not fun though...

An early coupe CL - I've got the brochure for that, and the Mars red car photographed has a graphite version of that interior with the caption ''UK Mars red cars will be equipped with a brown version of the CL's stripe interior''

been a little busy with the coupe the last couple of weeks while i have been collecting parts for the 1.6 AFH for the saloon :)

 

 

 

it has undergone quite a transformation!

 

managed to fit my bottom end a gearbox today anyway, just a few bits to do and the head etc can go on and be running very soon!!!

 

Got some more done yesterday, its almost resembeling a working engine!

Can't be far off running is it?

Literally just waiting on the inlet manifold to get finished and thats it to get it running, still need the odd jubilee clip and silly things like that but thats it! :)

Well alot has happened in a short space of time, to summarise...

 

Fitted the New old stock cyclinder head without having it skimmed even tho the mating surface was ruined with storage marks... (Idiot i know)

got the inlet manifold, 

fitted the carbs

carbs pissed fuel everywhere

fixed said carbs

started the car

Top end was very tappy (assumed this would clear up)

melted exhaust cam

blown headgasket

 

and thats where i am right now...

 

for those that saw on facebook i did get to the bottom of the oil pressure problem and because the head had been sat on a shelf bone dry for potentially almost 20years the oil check valve in the head have siezed shut so basically the head was running dry aside from the oil i put on it during assembly...

 

and then because i was a tosser and didnt have the head skimmed the headgasket also went and turned the oil into milk.... 

 

I feel so stupid for rushing and cutting corners but ohwell i will have it sorted again fairly soon!

I call it 'modelers hand'. I don't know if it's a thing. But when i used to make models in my early teens, i went through a phase of rushing it, usually about 5/6ths into the build. That's when the glue/paint ran, or something would bond pissed, or i'd put a finger print somewhere. Little bit of exitement..

 

But with these it's all good. You don't learn otherwise. I always break something, being too keen.. Atm my alternator is tensioned with a top mount wedged behind it - the bolt is snapped in the block because i didn't have the patience to come up with a better bracket design, when the car was nearly ready for it's MoT.

There are always setbacks even if you are ultra cautious.

I'm glad I turned mine on the starter motor with ignition disconnected to see I got good oil pressure before I tried to start after rebuild, but that finished off the old starter motor.

Shes alive again! Running absolutly spot on this time aswell!!  ime so happy!

well that lasted long....

 

took it for a short drive around the block today to see if everything worked as it should, just tootling along absoltly fine and suddenly its on 3 cylinders!! can hear it chuffing back through the carb on cylinder 2 so i have a sneaky suspicion its intake valve related as a compression test gave a big fat 0...

 

pretty pissed off with it right now to be honest!

Aannnddd its fixed again...

 

took the rocker cover off this morning and had a poke about then found this:

 

 

managed to get it out by removing both cams and all spark plugs then putting some rope down the offending cylinder and turning the bottom end until the rope squashed up against the valve and i could jam a valve spring compressor against the exhaust manifold and hey presto it was out :) abit pikey but its worked. Fitted a spare spring from a mate and its fixed again. 

 

however upon inspecting the spring it looks quite corroded/rusty at the point it broke so i just hope that all the others arnt the same... 

 

Anyway i took it for a drive around the block and it felt very quick, brakes needed some attention but thats also done now!

 

now just an mot and its going to be a daily again!!

Well its officialy on the road!!!

 

took it for a drive this morning and broke another valve spring before i even got off my estate. So brought it home and just replaced all the intake valve springs this time!

 

all fixed now anyway, runs well overall but there is just a slight hesitation on part throttle which i just suspect is carb setup so will see once its been on the rollers and ive had chance to set it up better!

 

but so far so good! I forgot how much ridiculous torque steer it has though, the quaife is just brutal, pulls all over the road under hard acceleration...
