  • I need final drives, myself. Id really like a 3.3 but a 3.5 would do,I'm sure mine is a 3.8 and first gear is utterly useless.

Is this worth pinning some wear on clubpolo ?

Nice one! Top find!!

I uploaded an excel file in a few threads which has most of the gearbox codes, ratios etc :)

nice job saf

does anyone know where i can find the 8R and the AFA?

its strange how both gt boxs have different final drive.

Someone please move to FAQ or pin it! :-)

What a man!

Does anyone have one for the 6n boxes too?

8R was fitted to mk2s that had the GK engine so a pretty rare beast. (you'll not find one over here) AFA was fitted to some mk2 1.05s, but most use the later AHZ because the 5 speed was always an optional extra on mk2 1.05s except for late saloons and some special editions which were more common towards the end of mk2 production.

nice one thanks

do you know if theres any gearboxs out there that share the same 1st and 2rd as the gt box but has longer 3rd 4th and 5th

or is the 8p the closes i will get?

The AYZ is closer to what you want. Shorter first, similar 2nd but longer 3rd 4th and 5th

What would reducing final drive do then? Does that not make it less economical whilst reducing top speed, at the expense of a small increase in accel? Or have i got it back to front?

There are over fifty codes for the 5-speed version alone,i tried a topic like this and it failed but i had little to start with. This is a good start.

There are bits here and there in the forums,i think Yeha put a bunch up at some point, someone did,so any links people can find would be great.

6n boxes are being melted down daily, and they're good for almost thirty years worth of cars. 5th gear alone is easy enough to change without removing the gearbox, mine is from a 75ps 1.6 6k but with a longer fifth from a 6n which had a shorter ratio diff.

The longest 5th i ever found was in a 6n diesel, btw. The biggest cog of that set was 51T. I'm currently using just the next size down (50T) from some random Pistachio with a different 6n 1.4 final drive and its giving me 4k rpm @ 100mph. But that's quite a jump from fourth, which has the engine working rather hard at the ton (perfect for two-shift quarter sprints, not much else). So its like a 6-speed where 5th doesn't work.

I'm particularly interested in the Seat versions,as I've heard their final drives are lowest.

Thats amazing revs at the speed, could do with something like that. So to remedy you might suggest a taller 4th gear? Could you fit a short 5th in place of the 4th? Or are the cogs too different in size? I'm talking with zero experience with gearboxes here

Dunno,I'm doubting the gearsetsare interchangeable.

I've got a couple of cheap gearboxes in the post, trying to blag another couple of broken ones. Then i'll strip them all down, work out what gear and diff ratios I've got,and build one with particularly long gearing.

If anyone's got a broken Polo/Ibiza/Cordoba/Golf gearbox they dont need from a 1.0/1.1/1.3/1.4/1.6, of any age, please let me know.

I'm a noob when it comes to this, so please don't hurt me. But what gearboxes are interchangeable/fittable to a 1.3 GT MPI engine? As my 5th gear has decided not to work anymore.

Has anyone looked at a pinion and crownwheel set made by a company called autogear, it is 17x61 teeth which gives a final drive of 3.59 , it could make a real difference if your running 13inch wheels like me! Thoughts anyone?

VW already did a 3.588 and a 3.600, already two remarkably close ratios to that size (and 3.588 isn't uncommon), in their wide range of 3.333 - 4.267.

But all info is appreciated! In competition 0.002 can count.

61/17=3.588!

I'm sure this has already been asked but whats the best gearbox for a 1043 mk2? Hate the 4th gear whine, would like a long 5th gear ideally. Thanks in advance

I rounded 3.588 to 3.59 :p what pn is a 3.588? couldnt find that ratio on etka without a bolt on crownwheel! also with some further research in to the diesel polo gear boxes i found a few with this final ratio or lower to bring back the natural revs vs speed of older petrol polos with 13inch wheelsn fitted!I think the code was apx if i remember correctly(will have to dig out my notes). Now just gotta go digging round the scrappys with a torch :ninja:

Why's the image in the first post deleted?
