Spend a grand on that and you will have a very quick car, even how it is it's quick. And they are relible, gearboxes or bomb proof and sooo much fun

If you want something fun i think you'll be disappointed with anything VAG after 1993 (but for a cab,obviously).

I stuck with the MK2 Coupe because i saw its potential, but if i was looking now and wanted it ready to go from day one, id probably check over a few 205 1.9 GTi's during my search.

Get a Fabia VRS Diesel, drove one at work and was amazed at the power..

i do like the seat cupras, the person i bought my g40 off had a vr6 and he said the vr6 wasnt as quick as the g40 (thr g40 is 171hp tho) i do love the sound of the vr6!

Why do you want a small motor, you'll get more bang for your buck if you are willing to compromise on the size, imo.

Buy an old mini, and a 1.8 vtec engine, or a GSXR thou engine. You can do alot with £4k...

Yep you'd get a tidy E36 M3 3.2 Evo saloon for that, or an average M3 3.0 Coupe. You'd get a very good 3.6 E34 M5, and an average 3.8 6 speeder...

An E36 M3 saloon is what my £4k would go on.

All the memorable cars I've owned,that made driving fun,that i toured the country in,they were all pocket rockets. They weren't even all quick. I've had a few 6-cylinder cars (though I'm a petrol head,I'm also a bit of a hippy and dont do more litres than seats) and none of them were fun.

Biggest car i had that was fun was a 405 1.9 SRi. It was far more fun than a 306 2.0 16v XSI i had soon after, but then the 405 felt like a smaller car.

Worst big car was a Rover 827i. Strangely reliable,just rubbish.

I share your sentiments with the Golf,cant go wrong. But he could get 200bhp per tonne by spending just one grand on his MK2 Coupe,then have no qualms about paying for a PPP front subframe.

The Golf has more though - room,great parts availability etc,its a good call. But i think if i was to use a different shell now it'd be a MK1 Golf 5dr or MK1 Jetta.
