you want to hear the best back when i was 16, a friend of mine, obviously a girl had broken down, so to look cool i tried to help knowing nothing about cars, opened the bonnet, the car had been over heating, ask her how long she'd be there for, she said ages, went to release some pressure and heat from the coolant tank, it exploded, took the lid to the head and third degree burns down the side of my face..

haha then i went and brought a polo and am a mechanic spare time lol

fitted my coilovers, and forgot to tighten the wheels up, noticed it knocking so pull over just as i hit the grass at the side of the road passenger one fell off :(

left the door open on my old car then went into the skatepark didnt relise till about an hour later and some guy askd whos car it was

I once changed the exhaust on a moped i had, went out for a quick blast to see if it was any good, i heard some rattling so i stopped, and like a complete idiot grabbed and shook it. Had blisters all over my hand and fingers for the next 2 weeks.

Also did the same thing with my car about 3 days ago, pt a new exhaust clamp on and grabbed it, now I've gt burnt fingers :(

Just thought i'd share!!

haven't started working on my car too much yet so ill start with a bmx story. I had just fixed a puncture i think, left the bike for abit then got bored and went to go for a ride... rolled the bike off the drive hopped on, went to 'chip' it off (haha haven't used that word in ages) and realised i hadnt done the bolts back up. the wheel literally rolled off 50ft down the road and i landed on my face.

slightly emabarrassing part was having to walk down the road and retrieve my wheel infront of all the neighbourhood kids, blaming the bike as i went

You're not the only one to do that either! Luckily i can hardly feel the end of my fingers so i have to wait for the smell of burning chicken before i realise

..so i finally got the aluminium cylinder block in the coupe-s and got the Rover head bolts to bolt the AFH head to it. All that horror but finally it was nearly done. I placed the ABU gasket on the block and looked at the '04 Golf pistons to make out their markings.

This is the point where it dawned on me that cylinder three's piston was the wrong way around :retard:

Even before I read this I have always had abnormal paranoia about undoing that cap too quickly and that happening to me!

The day i got my mk3 polo i went round to a mates house that had bought a 6n the same day,

Noticed that where id parked down a slight hill my boot was directly over a grate, me being me knew that id drop the keys down the grate so i moved the car further down the hill a foot or so,got out to go round and open the boot, keys dropped out of my hand, bounced off my foot and still went down the drain!. luckily left the car open with the spare set in the door pocket

one of my mates at work was in the works van when he came up to a barrier he opened the door to press the buzzer only he used his left hand to press the buzzer and his right hand to keep hold of the door a strong gust of wind got hold of the door whiping him straight out of his seat and into the fence he was parked next to oh how i laughed before taking him to a/e to have his rips checked lol

bmx story, my brother told me that his mate got a flatie and rather then fix it he put grass in the tyre, so yes i tryed it at a ramp park were i tried to ride like normal and just and metal instead also i was 100 miles from home and we rode to all the public transport.we didnt get home till the next day

i owed a bedford midi for my first car my bros drive is a steep angle with a wall at the bottom, i forgot the handbrake so my bullbars smashed the wall down, i just moved the van and didnt say anything .

205 i borrowed my mates car and though f-it lets go off road when up to this puddle[huge] 40ft long and messured after 1 look shouted yeah f-it 30mph car cuts out smoke from the engine and the water is up to the bottom of the glass filling the car some how the car rolled to the other side were me and my mates shat our selfs, for no warning the engine to turn its self bck on , but drove ten miles home with no brakes [metal on metal]

205 i have always wanted to know if it was really possablie to drive threw a corn field turns out i found 1 and gave it a go 1 night i drove for about 40 minutes in this field car cuts out, we hear gun shots form the local framer shit our selfs and try to push the car out wudnt move, my mate fell over in front of the car and lands his feet in water so we grab the satnav and i was just about to drive in to the river ouse at 3am, and the car wont work coz thefuel line is under the car and snapped full of mud.

i had by this point only been drivin for 7 months

Thats not noobish mistakes thats just being a nob

When i worked in a garage i was told to put a new front end, bumpers and a brake change on an automatic mk1 golf, changed all the brakes everything going swimmingly struggled a bit with front bumper but finally everything was on and done after a whole day doing this job and other things. Dropped the ramp down, started the car and started to pull out of the door now seeing this was the first time i had driven an auto it was a bit wierd so naturally i decided to stamp on the accelerator instead of the brakes which i hadnt pumped up! straight into the front of a parked arosa, moved it back a carparking space and totally mangled the new front mk1 bumper not too mention the arsosa!

please note the pedals are in the same place in an auto and manual, theres just one missing

Got out of a sprinter van forgetting I was in a sprinter van and landed in a heap on the ground.

Locked myself out of 2 of my own transits (cold drive home with no driver's quarter light each time) and work's brand new (coverred 500 miles) Focus. I got the AA out to that one to bend the door out, it's still a bit wobbly now but luckily, noones noticed, and none of my bosses drive Polos ;)

i drive to the train station to get to uni, had an exam a few months ago, was so worried about the exam and getting there on time i forgot to close my open air roof!

was quite a cloudy day and the train journeys 1 1/2 hours so was shitting myself all day hoping it didnt rain

:paranoid: that excited to set off to RTTS I forgot to put my coolant cap on my expansion tank, only to do 400+ miles to Cornwall that morning.

Not pumping my brakes after replacing the disc and pads...

LMAO SMITHY!!

Lol, I've ran out of them now..

Not my mistake but..

was at pub with the GF, and my mate calls up saying he'd finished work and he wanted to show me his new motor..... V8 3.5 landrover

i say to the GF il be back in 10 mins, get in my mates vehicle assuming we'd just do a loop of the city centre then go back to the pub. its about 11pm and a full on rain storm

he takes me near my old house about 5 miles from the city centre, near the fields we used to spend a long time parked up smoking at back in my youth

"you want to see how good it is off road?" I'm like hell yeah. we find a field [not a corn field!] that we had driven a friends car round before and start tanking it down it, could only see about 10m ahead and it the terrain looked the same....

then there was what looked like a dip... then a huge bang seat belt went tight as fuck and we got thrown about to fuck

I've had a wheel fall off whilst doing 70 down the motor way at half 5 in the morning, luckily it was the front wheel on the beetle, I'd only had the wheel off a fortnight ago which I thought I'd tightened it up good then. Got away with a tiny flat spot on the disk and some small chips on the paint. Quite scary driving home after that :(

Another I had is fuelling the bug up to the brim and then jacking up one corner only to find it pissing out over the road and in the car :(

Both lessons learnt the hard way lol

that landie is fail lol

now when i first started driving when fuel was 75.9p a litre i was at asda in rochdale parked at the pump gets out the car so my brother gets out to i thought sod it he probably just wants to stretch his legs so start filling my car up then i got a whiff of a really strange smell (for a petrol station forecourt) so I'm thinking no it cant be I'm imagining things so gets another whiff thinking wheres it coming from so i turn around and my brother is stood right behind me smoking a cig then to put the icing on the cake he couldnt understand why i was going mad to which i explained fuel plus cig equals no more petrol station

After taking a car for a spirited spin to test the new brakes, got home and thought cant feel much heat from them and put my finger on what turned out to be a red hot brake disc  had a nice blister for weeks.

Another time we were working on a pug estate replacing the rad/AC fans and the relays, (engine is cold and battery disconnected), refit the new fans all ok, plug in one relay, plug in the second and the bloody fan kicks in to high power, i fall back hearing a sound like wood going through a saw, mate looks at me and goes white, the fan had shaved off all the skin down the side of my left hand but i couldnt feel a thing from it, what made that happen....he had put his metal tea mug down on the battery to hand me the relay and it was touching the car body and the post to add to that unlucky bit the relay we had was stuck on. after returning from A/E we went to have a look at the car and the fan wasn't a pretty sight. while my skin healed without almost a mark i have no feeling on that section.
