I left that sort of thing down to the guy at work. The principle of it is easy to master, its just pulling the deformed panel in the right places that I'd struggle a bit with, as you have to have an eye for these things, which I haven't yet got.

Yours was one of the many Mark2s in Mars Red I thought about when I got a bit fed up of mine. I was just thinking if I stick with it, it might if I'm lucky end up like one of the ones I've seen on the forum. Wish I could remember the guys name who i bought the car off, and if he's even still a registered member. Would have liked him to have known C74 BTP is still going.

So, having done phase 1: strip-down, phase 2: repair, this weekend saw phase 3 commence; pre-preparation for paint.

On Friday I managed to grab a bit of time on my breaks to do the last few bits of strip down that were required. This meant the tailgate had to come off, and the doors needed to be removed and stripped down. I also removed the front arch trims and black-out stickers on the B-posts.

By the end of work on Friday things looked like this:

I'm sure you'll agree it looks very sorry for itself! But as was once said you've got to break eggs to make an omellette, so with it looking its worst, it could only start looking better...

Saturday was the day we laid down the primer on the repaired parts of the car:

It chilled in the booth until this morning when it finally came out to make way for this weeks array of cars in need of repair.

Next on the list is to get hold of 2 litres of LA3A (Mars Red) 2K. She should be in paint this coming weekend :-D.

Its going to be hard graft on Saturday, flatting the paint back. The existing paint is going to need going over, then theres the guide coat to follow on the primer to make sure that's all level. Hopefully get it all done in a 4 hour stint on Sat morning.

Nearly two years now my brother had it before me brought it from a chap in Bath who brought it from Autohausdolby on the forum. Autohausdolby gave it a respray and a 1.3AAV. I'm glad the car had been well looked after only a few spots rust under the car and down the inner wings which I've treated and painted.

Yea still got the hailer lol, its getting there slowly! Handbrakes are gash tbh, and the early spec polos are a pain to fit late setups to...always think about finding a better shell, the hailer has had a hard life before I got it. Lot's of repair work here and there. Still pretty solid though!

Well, a large spanner was dropped in the works last weekend. The painter was off ill. I still cracked on and got flatting the primer and old paint ready for its fresh top coat. Its funny the finish you end up achieving!

By the time I'd finished the rear panel and the drivers rear quarter, they had a dull shine. Something I've never experienced before in primer! It wasn't like I was polishing it either. 400gritt on a DA sander and some superfine sponge sanding pads for all the nooks and crannies.

Needless to say prepping a car is a fine art. Especially doing it to the standard needed for a decent finish, and in such little time, as the guys at work can do. Those two panels took me 3 hours, and that's before I've looked at the doors or passenger side panels!

So, it finally happened.

The car was fully prep'd last week, ready for the booth this weekend.

Take one of these:

Add some of this:

Apply lovingly to get one of these:

And a pair of these:

Next stage: Rebuild, followed by polish.

It's looking good.

I think they're gonna have to make a re-appearance, as for me, they are part of what makes a Coupe S a Coupe S. I can see what it looks like as I'll have to get it MOT'ed, etc before I can drive it to a graphics place. Might give me time to ponder.

I'm going to be paranoid now about scratching new paint when it come to the rebuild! Just got to take my time, well, as much as the constraints of having to do it at work will allow.

You've got a cracking one on the go yourself. When are you aiming to have yours back on the road? Summer next year? I think, all being well, I should have mine done for March at the latest, looking at it conservatively.

The bonnet and bootlid are next to get a hit of fresh paint, as we were struggling for time to get them prepared and painted. Thankfully theres enough Mars Red left over to do the job. 4 coats were laid down in total, so theres some good protection on there now. It also makes polishing easier, as it can be so easy to go through the paint on 2K.
