Karl's 1986 Coupe S

I'm really not sure what direction to take this one in, as once its back together, its very much a standard, blank canvas.

I see this image:

And don't ask me why I like the look of it standard. But equally I wouldn't mind something thats a bit more practical than the Mark3, but as nippy, if not faster... Decisions, decisions...

Not a bad option though, don't forget Saf can fit one in his lunch break, probably one-handed. Baah

1.6 AFH with some dirty cams, 4-branch and a GT 'box. Lower it a touch, but otherwise leave it standard and just concentrate on chassis improvements.

Good call on sticking some pin stripes back on!

Exterior just like the photo with a 1.6 AFH on carbs.. :)

OOOh leave it standardish looks wise but have to agree with a nicely tuned AFH but i would try to wire in the standard AFH injection and management with it being a more practical daily driver.

Oh and a PPP subframe of some description should be a must on all tuned 86c polos in my opinion. Makes it feel like a much more solid car and does wonders when out on a spirited drive ;)

Keep up the stirling work :-)

mars red shed - you are a shed no more.

karlos you know my thoughts - lower + petays gt lump = win.

big fruity lump for petay = bigger mcwin

both come with fries

enjoy

GT-T it? :p

Looking good Karl! So has the whole car been resprayed? Cos it looks like the wipers and part of the roof are masked off?

I left the roof, as I don't want to damage the gutter trims removing them, and in fairness, the roof and scuttle, etc are in decent nick, as the paintwork had previously been cared for by the previous owner.

Fair enough then! :D

Did like my Mark3? Makes it sound like I've sold it haha. Not a chance of that after over 6 years. Problem is Ill then want a Mark1 after this...

Ah yea, I like the Mk2 more is what I mean :p But I'm biased!!

Looks wicked in the fresh paint. Really wanna do mine now thanks for the motivation :)

As for engine plans, I'm going to vote with the AFH. Yours is a late Mk2 so fitting injection isn't too hard, and the wiring is simples too once you get your head round the hundreds of redundant wires you have to strip off the loom! So yea 1.6 16V, might as well ;)

Thanks. You should continue to get cracking! Its the right time of year for it .

I'm a bit baffled by this Mark2. Its a C plate so its a mish-mash of early and late. The floor pan is late, the dash is late, the bonnet is early, the brakes are late, the wings are late, the tailgate and rear lights were, I suspect early until they were replaced, the rear quarters are early, and its got the later hydro head MH. Hopefully in light of this I've gained enough later parts to make the conversion straight forward.

Right time of year as in cold, rainy and dark? wish I had some indoor space

Yea you should be ok with having a late floor pan, that's the most important bit really.

Just a quick update to show it going back together. Need to make up some new door membranes.

Some good news today as well. Fitted the fuel tank on Saturday, having had to remove it for having the sills welded. Sorted out some new fuel hose, some fuel and a new battery, and after a bit of cranking to draw the fuel through, she fired up and ran sweetly after 2 years of being pronounced dead.

awesome! old vws never die.. :)

fresh paint looks so good

Thank you dude :-). I'm lucky working where I work. Couldn't have done it otherwise.

Should have the tailgate on by the weekend, and it should be fully polished. Hoping to have the new door membranes fitted, and then the interior can start going back together.

Got some new VW goodies coming tomorrow, which should also be going on at the weekend.

All being well, it'll be back to the unit next weekend too.

That looks lovely :)

how come you painted it pink k-man?

:ninja:

 ^ , looking gd man ! dint even no u had a mk2 !

Awesome! Cant wait for the pics of it outside to show the paint off!

That won't be for a while yet haha. Once its back together it's getting MOT'ed, though I suspect it may well fail on top mounts as they're really protruding from the front turrets! Once its on the road it'll be back to work to make full use of the valeting bay, and then will come the pictures.

Well, it's been a while since I last updated this thread, so here's the latest rafct of updates.

Last weekend I finally got around to putting the tailgate back on. This in itself was easy enough, routing the wiring harness and the washer jet hose down the quarters, without inadvertantly putting either of the aforementioned items down the sunroof drains, however, wasn't. With some metal wire and patience things started to fall into place.

Whilst I was faffing around in the boot, I refitted the wiring harness to the rear panel and plugged in the rear lights. I need a new ring terminal for the earth on the number plate lights though, as they currently cease to function. The rear washer bottle was also re-installed and the finished item looked like this:

That brings us on to this weekend. Its a busy one!

Firstly the Mark3 was due its MOT, so some trusty, and dependable electrical tape came in:

This was to make the headlamps slightly less left-hand-drive than they are.

Then came some more tasks with the MRS. The front end was all re-fitted and wired up:

Archliners fitted, rubber seals on the A-pillars fitted (they needed fresh adhesive), and then on to the door membranes which were shocking after 24 years, so time to make some new ones:

cb9897bb.jpg

They look a bit ropey, I know, but with the bracket sticking out for the mirror adjuster, it was hard tro get them sitting right.

With the doors all back together I focused my attention back on the rear of the car, and filled a big hole:

Fitted the wiper motor and interior trim. Filled the inside with cavity wax too to ensure a bit of longevity! By the way if anyone has any parts from a Coupe rear wiper set up spare, please can they get in touch?

Next week it might finally get polished once and for all, and then the remaining part of the rebuild can continue at the unit. If it doesnt get polished next week, I can turn my attention to fitting the arches and sill covers.
