Getting there

Well, heres the next lot of updates from me.

Most of the 'bodykit' it refitted, as are the tailgate badges. Just got to re-wire up the number plate lights, and the wiring harness for the tailgate to get the rear heated screen and wiper opertaional again.

Should get the missing arch from kerrly sometime soon :-). Next is to give it a thorough clean inside and work on getting it MOT ready.

Here's some pictures I got after a quick pre-liminary wash at work. Unfortunately there were muddy puddles round the back which quickly transferred to my car!

The vinyl is made by Dan Knight (volkswagenstickers.co.uk). I purchased it off ebay, as I dont think they're currently in his online shop. Going to be purchasing the b pillar stickers from him after xmas.

Like me, you have odd tail lights. Check the orange colour, might just need a clean inside

He doesn't do the tailgate vinyl just yet, as he needs a template to copy. Something should be in the pipeline though .

I had wondered about the rear lights. I might have to try the dishwasher trick...

All being well. The jobs to do before its officially back on the road are:

1) Sort out tailgate wiring, so the heated rear screen and wash/wipe are operational again.

2) Sort out number plate lamp wiring (they only need wiring to earth).

3) Replace front top-mounts.

4) Fit VW II calipers and braided hoses.

5) Unseize rear brakes and replace wheel bearings.

6)Fit missing trim, such as arch moulding, b-pillar stickers and some interior trim.

If I can wait a bit longer, I might get a lowering kit for it and fit that before its maiden voyage.

Hehe. Its been like building a jigsaw puzzle with bits on order from VW, and bits from other cars, so I wouldn't worry.

In short - if we give it one decent weekend - it's there :)

I'm still keeping my options open regarding engines. The current one only has 57k on it, and a fresh headgasket and service under it's belt. With a 5 speed 'box on there I could see some decent economy, though I'd be scared to try and fight through Nottingham rush hour traffic in it, for fear of someone undoing all the work thats been done!

It's literally just left work, and on to the unit where the greasey bits will get a tinker next. I'm not sure whether to save up for a bit and amass a collection of new suspension and running gear components, or think sod it, and get it on the road. I still haven't actually driven it on the road in the 2 or so years I've owned it!

So thanks to kerrly, a missing puzzle piece turned up yesterday :-).

Some gentle heat from a heatgun, and some trim gel should see it good as new.

Oh yeah that thing was faded a bitch, i had it from the scappy years ago as a freebie before the car was crushed as it was the only arch left. I had it 'just incase' but i figured i could pass it on.

So progress on this has been very slow, as it ground to a halt whilst I was trying to find piston rings. After a couple of fruitless weeks searching, or coming across them at silly prices, which I deemed too much for a humble MH, I set about searching for a new engine.

Eventually one came up for the sum of nothing :-D. The downside being it was missing:

Inlet manifold

Carb

Exhaust manifold

Waterpipe

Engine mount

Alternator

Thermostat housing

Flywheel

And I'm sure theres a few other odds and sods. This didn't bother me though, as I have the cars original engine, which was mint bar the bottom end.

So, yesterday, the old engine came out, and the process of swapping bits from the 57k original lump to the replacement engine began.

Here are some pictures, as I vowed I'd take some to update this thread!

Bonnet off, carb off, and coolant being dropped.

Back into the workshop to undo gearbox/engine mounts and driveshaft bolts.

Out she comes!

Farewell old engine! You didn't serve me well!

I need to get busy with the degreaser I think!

Old engine raided of missing parts. Just the clutch and fly to come off, then its about ready for scrap.

Replacement engine about 75% built up. Just waiting on the clutch from the above engine, then the gearbox can go on and the whole lot me re-installed.

So this next week I've got a few bits to source through work:

Waterpump

Flywheel bolts

Carb bolts (holding carb to inlet)

Exhaust manifold nuts and washers

Alternator belt

And hopefully that should be it, though I'm dubious about the clutch. It still carries the original VW markings from 1986! Do I replace it as a matter of course, or see how long it will last out?

This won't be the final configuration of engine for this car anyway, and it won't be a daily, so if the clutch does fail, it isn't a big issue, if I decide not to replace until I have a 5 speed gearbox, anti-roll bar and gear selector.

I think hang with the clutch, it's only done 50-odd k, it felt fine, and there looked to be plenty of life left in it.

Part of me still wants to totally nut and bolt your old engine.

So I got some more done today.

The flywheel and clutch were nabbed from the old engine, along with the head.

I managed to build everything up so its virtually ready to go in. Just need a waterpump now and a few nuts and bolts from the stealers.

I'll give it a quick degrease, but as I don't think this engine will be a permanent fixture, I wont be going to town on it.

Replacement engine built up, bar waterpump.

Car and engine come face to face once again.

This week I'll hopefully get the bay and engine cleaned.
