nah tyre imo must be kept up with but as you say you thought they were omn the limit (which should still be pretty safe)

vosa are all around atm, stopped a bloke i know and insisted the were gonna to dip his tank looking for red diesel , turned around to him and said omg what have you got in this car its not normal diesel its not red diesel!!! he turned around and said thats because its petrol!!! should have checked the computer!

I'm with Panda. If you can't afford to keep your car within basic safety related legalities then you shouldn't be on the road. Just because you don't have a car doesn't mean you can't get to work. Thats what planes, trains, bicycles and buses can be used for. As in what people who don't have a car use.......

3 of them step out in the road and shout like me and shit, i pull in and they said what were u doing driving like a idiot etc. (swerving to avoiding deep drain covers) he tells me what he can do. instant ban for 'Dangerous driving', 6 points for driving with technically invalid insurance and a Hefty fine. Lucky i got off with a warning. but he never told me to go home with a change my insurance. didnt check over the car lucky as one of my tyres had stupid camber wear and was past the cords. I've seem to found if your nice to the police and joke with them they seem to be alryt back and tend to give you the lightest consquence

I know that your tread was considerably lower than the limit, but that was probably on the lowest point.. you probably wouldn't have crashed as I'm sure you don't drive like a dick. Just caught them on a bad day where he had to tally up a certain number of results for the day I guess. Feel bit gutted for you man when like you say, you've been punished the same as people who drive dangerously, speed, and don't bother getting insurance.

Yea i know i agree with everyones comments, wasnt asking for sympathy just sharing the day. But yes it was a full road block check, x2 set of officers and obviouslly calling the cars in that go by, but yes just never got round to doing tyres.

Made my insurance go up by over £200... but hey ho what can you do !

I had one tyre just on limit and was found to be the reason of my recent accident now my insurance has rocketed.... Plus i've lost no claims etc.. To be honnest i would have rather of had a £60 fine and 3 points than wrighting off my car and a brand new beamer.... And as I'm third party i have to repair the car myself..

what happened in your accident mate, if you don't mind me asking? i'm guessing it was wet?

i'd would hazard a wild guess and say in most cases the coilovers and alloys came before the tire was bald? just because you can afford parts for you car one month doesn't mean you will have spare cash to spend on it a few months down the line when some thing pop's up on it.

You should plan for tyres and servicing as you can predict when you're going to need them and budget accordingly.

For example, I came across some cheap tyres in the right size for the polo a couple of months back, so I picked them up and i've got them stored untill I need them.

exactly. i could go out now and buy a load of mods and have a cool looking car, however I'm going to spend it on such things as replacing brakes, even though they're not excessively worn, or illegal, just peace of mind.

hit a pothole the other day and created a bulge in the sidewall of my tyre, just spent £50 on a brand new one, matching all the others on car.

with the money i earn i could probably have a well cool car, but id rather not kill myself by not spending on the important things!

the way i like to think of it is, if it was a 70 year old woman who got pulled over with a bald tyre, would they do the same in that situation?

I've had exactly the same thing but i had a fairly spacesaver as id had a puncture the day before, but i thought it was legal as it wasnt on any of the tread depth indicators, was just on the outside edge border line to the central 3/4

trick is to keep your car tip top, i think they should be out catching real criminals but hey, thats life. also a modified car will always attract attention.

on the plus side the governent are doing all these cuts, theyve cut serious funding to speed cameras, fingers crossed the budget will significantly reduce vosa/police funding for petty road offences

i know people will say 'no because it makes them money' but the money raised from fines goes into a different pot to the money spent on police time/resources to make the imposed penalty notices, or thats the way it works with speed cameras anyway

There's NO excuse for bald tyres! I change my tyres at 2mm.

End of the day, there's a little patch of rubber that's between your car and the road, it's probably the most important piece of your car. It's a life/death thing. How would you feel if your family was wiped out because of someone driving a car that wasn't in a safe condition?

Tyres can be had from £10 each, part worn, there's no excuse.

i could not agree more when its life or death usualy some one elses £10 each is nthing cheaper than a funeral

Even brand new tyres are barely £150 a set which normally last a year (6-8k if you swap fronts to back halfway) so in real terms its £3 a WEEK - A PINT!

it is harsh when you think about how many people actually know the difference between 1.0 and 1.6mm of tread, also yeh its ok to assume those basic figures but it's not always that simple in real life.

you can always get up on your high horse and say 'that should have been done before you drove', but there are always exceptions aswell. and unless he was driving like a bellend in the wet, the tread depth would never have been a safety issue anyway. the chap just had a shit piece of luck. and like has bewen previously mentioned, the depths are made to snure grannies can maintain control in the shittest of weathers.. anyone more swicthed on than that is hardly likely to lose control because of tyres in the middle of the day on a daiuly commute.
