Fitting a different cam to your 8v engine. (GT cam covered)

wanna do this to 1.4 aex where to i get a vernier pully from that wil work?

You probably don't need one mate. But it would be best you get one.

There are a few members from here using a GT cammed AEX that have just used there original pulley,

Thinking about it ,if you purchase a GT cam with pulley attached, Check that the mk3 and mk4 pulleys are the same (same amount of teeth with same shape teeth and pitch) i don't know if they are , Then work out how many teeth the mk3 gt cam is rotated less or more than your original in respect to the timing mark or dot shown in the guide, You will have to take your AEX camshaft out to check this properly.

Once you've worked out how many teeth the GT camshaft is rotated more than your original, Compensate this when fitting into your engine.

It may not be a exact amount, For example 1 and half teeth, But people who have don't it this way have said there engine is running fine.

Be good to hear from someone.

Pm me if you want me to explain better.

I haven't looked at my rocker cover recently, will have to check. Am I fit? Well my brothers mates all say so, so I guess.

Hello. Wery good forum and regards to all from Slovenia!

Do anybody knew from what valve lift was taken data for GT camshaft?

Everybody writes that have 219°, the hottest small block cam, but it was this from 1.0mm to 1.0mm or seat to seat duration?

It is interesting that GT 3f engine have 11:1 CR.

One year ago I buy some cam from catcams and seller say that I must have at least 11:1 static CR for 284° cam...interesting.

many thanks for answer

regards

So I've got a 1272cc mk2 with the HK engine. Its got the rocker cover with three bolts - is it viable to change the head to a gt one if I can find one?

Will it fit the HK engine? I read the whole thread and it wasn't mentioned.

Cheers for the write up.

Hmm, the HK. I don't know if the cam is a compatible part, purely because iv never come across one , or came across any information to do with it.

Does it have hydro lifters? And not mechanical?

Also, you don't need to change the head as yours will be of the same casting if its compatible.

It was on the later mk2 1300s pre facelift, its the one that came with the pierburg 2e3 carb.

how would I tell if it has mechanical or hydro lifters dude? (is that a silly question..)

I think it will be hyrdo then.

PM Gaz on here , he will definitely know.

Sorry gaz :-D

What sort of timing issues are there likely to be with using the GT cam in an AEA? Is it the same as the problems wit the AEX? Not really wanting to faff around with verniers.

Also, what is the advantage of the GT over standard cams, does it offer higher revs? I only ask because I shall be running my AEA on bike carbs, and by all accounts its a torquey engine when set up like that. Therefore I'd like to sacrafice some of that low end for a bit of top. Other mods are a simple 4-2-1 and polished ports if that helps

Oh, and HK is a hydro head

Thanks for that. "jimkarthauser" it should fit then.

The AEA is similar to the AEE fitted to the 6n's isn't it?

Regarding timing, Yes its the same problem as the AEX , AER etc. When the GT cam is fitted to one of these and timed up with respect to the timing marks, The cam will be 1-2 teeth out of sequence, it is rotated slightly more/less (don't know). This means that you are going to have to work out how many teeth you are going to have to compensate. I don't know these figures as I have never had any experience with these later engines.

If you have the GT cam and your original at hand. The simplest way in my eyes to find how many teeth you need to compensate for is to fit the correct pulley for your engine loosely onto your original camshaft, place the camshaft pulley face down on a piece of paper. Draw around the pulley's teeth , also make a mark on the paper which tooth that has the timing mark on , and also which way the first lobe is pointing exactly.

Do this for the GT cam as well, fitting it to the AER pulley and draw around it. You should then be able to see how many teeth the timing mark is rotated less or more than the original camshaft. Then compensate for it when fitting the GT cam to your engine.

This is only if you don't have a vernier , People have fitted the camshaft using timing marks and not compensated and say that the engine works "fine" , but I'm not convinced.

Cool stuff. I'll be on the hunt for a GT cam then. woo woo

Anyone got any experience of if it is worth doing? Am I really even likely to notice a difference? What about MPG, I know it will suffer but by a little or a lot?

-Jim

By all accounts the GT cam does make quite a difference. To see the full effect a GT box would also be good. However, due to shorter ratios, fuel consumption will be hurt more

As for my timing question, thanks a lot. I suppose it could be done by actually finding TDC visually, if i didn't have the GT sprocket. The engine is out of the car, so it's quite accessible atm.

Anyone else have any experience/ideas of how the GT cam would effect a 1.6 on bike carbs? Since i have never driven either a standard 1.6 let alone a 1.6 on BCs, It'll be no good for me to draw a comparison. What does the GT cam actually do? Longer duration, higher lift, more valve overlap?

  • Author

The GT cam has a duration of around 219 degrees, Which is pretty modest for a standard camshaft.

The biggest benefit it offers is the lift, Its much bigger than other cams in engines of similar design.

To take the biggest advantage of BC's on a AEE , the GT cam is vital IMO. No point in having all the flow from the carb's if its just going to get stopped by the valves.

Gt box would be awesome as well, And definitely a decent exhaust.

Your looking at a very powerful 8v.

Thanks for the info. I see what your saying about the duration. I have a 4-2-1 manifold and 2" Ashley exhaust. Although the flex portion is standard diameter, which I can only see as being restrictive. Will have to sort this out with a wider section. Not going with gt box though, ratios are too short, it'll be a daily, so need th fuel economy. Plus I'd never use the first couple of gears. I'v heard even with standard boxes, a bc'd 1.6 will spin wheels in all gears! I'll keep my eye out for a gt cam then i think

Thanks again for the advice

Oh, and HK is a hydro head

no it isnt, hk is a mechanical/soild lifter head

hi everyone.

i've got a '91 1043cm3 aau polo, can you tell me if i can find a gt cam? i need also a pulley? the vernier pulley of poloperformanceparts can help me?

this kit is what i am looking for? http://www.enginestuff.co.uk/product_info....oducts_id/27327

thanks, Marco.

Oh yeah, iv got mates from there.

Id be happy to do it for a few bucks.

Hi Max,

Are you sure you know what you're doing? If so I'm not sure how much I could afford, I'm still finishing m training so not on a great wage. I could pay you in something that ryhmes with bucks ??? :smirk:

so after reading this, will i be able to get any cam suited to a gt engine, and fit to my mk4 (apq) providing i use a vernier pulley? and could anyone recommend a suitable cam for my engine code? (better than a gt cam, piper, kent, shrick etc)?

  • 1 month later...

anyone?

  • 2 weeks later...

268 newman from phil j with 8k rev limit chip from poloace & ashley 4 branch going on my gt engine.

  • 3 weeks later...

I've realised mine is a 2g engine. silly me!

What do we do for the fuel pump? Nick one from a mk3?

Also, does anyone know how you'd identify a cam from a gt.. am buying one this week and want to make sure it's the real deal. :)

Edit - need a facet pump. And the cam part number is 030 AF

Dude u could use a dti through the spark plug hole to find tdc, it might be a bit tricky to set up but its a surefire way of finding tdc!

Anyone got any suggestions on how to be a wee bit more accurate setting the timing up? I've got a lamp.

Cheers

We talking about ignition timing or piston/valve timing here mate?

I've got the piston valve timing right although I need to slacken the belt a touch I think.

It's just the ignition timing. I've got a lamp but never done timing before. Is it the same setting regardless of what cam you're running?

Cheers

In principle its the same, but you might want to advance the timing slightly, do this by rotating the dizzy clockwise, looking at it from the pass wing.

I found a cam with the number 030AD,.... any idea if it's a GT cam? Could it just be a superseded number?
