    Who taught you to weld?

i do have axle stands and dont worry these wont be the only things holding the car i will have axle stands supporting it also

these are just to get it to sit at the correct height and taking its own load and i wont be going under the car while its on these and it will only be sat on these for a day or two while i get everything measured and tacked in the right place ready for proper welding then it will be jacked back up and put on to the taller axle stands for me to get underneath the car

and you werent being a dick pointing it out Kiz i had thought they would be unsafe being used alone

its just the easiest thing i had to hand and its saved me alot of hassle and time making something especially when they wont be in use for a long time and they are probably one use anyways tbf and i am going to beef them up a little welding some 10mm thick plate to the front hub face on the and to the inside of the front of the box section

all they will be doing is pushing the shock up as if thats taking the weight of the car so just small supports in the end

tbf i've worked under cars supported by less

IMG_1116.jpgbeen getting some progress done on this today and odd bits throughout this last week

first i got my new in car strip light fitted so i can properly see what I'm doing ;)

IMG_1084.jpg

got it dropped onto the hub stands so i could start getting the rear wishbone mounts in the right place

got both driveshafts fitted first and both rear coilies

IMG_1085.jpg

IMG_1088.jpg

IMG_1086.jpg

then got the car dropped back down so the weight is on the suspension and the car is sat level so the hub stands are correct and working

i also have axle stands and some box section supporting the chassis just incase the hubstands give way but they are mainly taking up the suspension travel

IMG_1100.jpg

so i started making the tca mounts today

started with some 60x60 box that i had drilled and notched this week at work

fitted this to the tca then worked out where and how low from the chassis rail it needed to be mounted

then did what i do and voila

IMG_1112.jpg

IMG_1114.jpg

IMG_1116.jpg

IMG_1117.jpg

IMG_1118.jpg

so ended up with this rear adjustable TCA mounted

so now the TCA's were near done i had to sort the compression struts and as these were originally intended for mk1-2 escorts they come with mounts designed for them but these are easily altered rather than making complete new ones

so once i worked out where the struts need mounting i could start modifying to fit

i welded some tube to the correct height so these are basically ready for mounting but i ran out of time today and it got very cold so i gave up

hopefully get these on tomorrow but I'm busy during the day so il see what time i get back tomoz evening

IMG_1122.jpg

IMG_1123.jpg

IMG_1124.jpg

so by next weekend i should have a full wishbone conversion on the rear :)

I also got a few goodies this week

ally tube to make a new custom fuel rail so i can run an adjustable fuel pressure regulator rather than the standard one

IMG_1095.jpg

IMG_1096.jpg

IMG_1097.jpg

i will have my old afh fuel rail with a 1.8t adjustable fuel pressure regulator installed for sale soon

IMG_0694.jpg

adjustable from 3-5 bar so perfect for turbo applications

also got my new 38mm external wastegate and its absolutely HUUUUGE didnt realise these things were so big

IMG_1110.jpg

IMG_1111.jpg

also started to get my fittings and hose for my turbo oil feed line and fuel rail connections i will be running the Stainless braided Teflon hose throughout the whole car the stuff i already use for my fuel line and all alloy quick release connectors to match

AN4 Hose

IMG_1105.jpg

Fuel rail AN6 fittings

IMG_1108.jpg

all fittings

IMG_1106.jpg

now i had some large size tube left over from my inlet plenum and so i thought i would put it to use and make a fuel swirl pot from it

its custom which is what i want and also saves me £80 at least from buying one

so i bought some AN6 weld on fittings to get started on it and am ordering the aluminium billet to make the ends next week

5 AN6 weld on fittings came to a little over a tenner and the ally billet ends are another tenner plus the tube was free so in all costing me just over £20 and my time and effort for a custom Fuel Swirl Pot

IMG_1107.jpg

thats all so far apart from I've now got a brand new mk2/3 sump to baffle and i will be selling it so if interested let me know and il also be starting to make these and selling them at a good price (using new sumps each time)

TCA mounts :( could have been done a lot better IMO. Why not machine from solid?

  • Author

Why machine them from solid that's excessive work and weight for no real benefits

I hear Ben has comissioned a few machined bits ;) If they turn out like the rest of your machine bits I'm sure they will be bang on :-)

Just look generally bad lol :(

How much thought have you put into your suspension hard point measurements?

Lol nicks its an experimental 4 wheel drive polo. It doesnt need to win any awards or championships.

I was only asking due to being interested, I assume you've not finished your suspension book yet?

I was only asking due to being interested, I assume you've not finished your suspension book yet?

But you know full well all the things your asking haven't been calculated. Just established through trial error...

Theres no need to be-little someone just because your in that line of work.

It's all adjustable so any bits that are slightly out can be adjusted to suit

The reason I made it all adjustable was to counteract any slack in my fabricating

I know I'm no where near perfect at these things but you really have got to understand this is a home garage project

Yeah the machining can be done at work but the car and the fabricating is all done at home

The TCA mounts are as simple as you can get no point over engineering them when the simple ideas will work and tbh I can see another way of doing them really I have made them based on the standard design like the front ones and how the escort 4wd guys do it the components I'm using are all tried and tested and made for home builds for the escorts so I've just adapte them to fit my polo

And just to clear it up this is not a production car and I will not be reproducing them ;p

No, he has done a lot of research and may have thought it out? Hence I asked what thought he'd put into it instead of saying he'd put no thought into it. Learn to read before getting on your high horse

  • Author

I did a lot of research yes mainly into the 4wd escorts as I can't look into 4wd polos an just brought across the process and ideas

Now to fit the tcas in a good place I unscrewed them to just under halfway then worked out the rough angle I wanted them sitting and where I wanted them to be mounted then made the mounts

The reason I set them half way is so I can adjust them both ways which is sensible really

Like Max said this is trial and error as I have nothing to go on really polo wise and I only know of 3 others in the world (not saying there isn't more) and none of them are in this country or are built/being built in the same way as I am doing it really

I really wasn't being negative, was simply asking.

Sorry for having an interest

Obviously there are non, was just wondering if you'd worked much out like bump camber increase and bumpsteer and such, as you want to use on a track don't you?

I wasn't having a go either Nick just saying how I went about it

I don't really need to worry about bump steer etc as the suspension will be pretty stiff

And the rear won't be steering but il have a turn buckle attached to the steering arm to alter toe in/ toe out

Yeah but you get rear steer too man, I was just wondering lol, guesstimation really then? Sure will be fine tbh anyway, was just interested as I frequently see new setups daily and spend time messing around with bump steer and roll centres etc etc

So instead of asking question we all pretty much know the answers to why not make calculated suggestions or show examples of your work??

Great work Ben I am a time served coach builder so know what you are going through with this.

Always remember an old guy I used to work with once told me,

"whats the difference between an engineer and a hot rodder??

The Hot Rodder finishers his job whilst the engineer is still thinking"

You crack on man I see you as the Hot Rodder...............

:-D Basically i think thats a stop patronising him Nick and let him be or suggest ways he could improve.

Back on topic, less words and more pictures Pete

Edited by v dub polo shaun

I'm not patronising him lmao, I was simply asking as I know he's researched a lot of things that people don't realise, and I have actually met Pete in real life unlike half of you and he's a good lad, so sorry for having an interest in his project! I think it's great he's actually getting on with an idea most people would keep in their head and doing it his way.

Keep up the work Pete, sorry for asking anything! :)

Come to think of it, I might have a nice pair of rear toe links that might suit this if you've not covered that yet

  • Author

Rear toe links forgive my naivety you got a picture I think I know what you mean

I may be interested in them if so

Would these be the bits for altering rear toe as in il use them to connect the steering arm to chassis and will be adjustable like the compression struts I have at the bottom

I'm currently working on sorting tht ATM an having a little trouble in getting parts

So I would be interested to see Nick

And more pics tonight peoples
