Lots of new shiny things and lots of other things that i shall paint before installing i'll update with more pictures of actual progress as soon as i can and more regularly now things are starting to happen.

So.. your making your wheels fit the arches.

Seems a bit backward to me. Surely it would be better to make the arches fit the wheels, not reduce the wheelbase to fit the body work?

its harder than you think to make the bodywork fit the wheels now as it is all seem welded up and the inner arches have been drastically altered to fit the new outer arches and believe me i have thought about it and to me this is the easiest way and I'm moving the stub axles forward by 30mm so its not a massive decrease in the wheelbase and it will work out less due to the lowering and the altered angle of the rear beam if you get me.

Yeah I see what you mean in terms of geometry.

My mates planning similar things with his bready.. I think he secretly wishes he had a mk2 coupe. The front arches he's done would be the same principal at the rear with coupe arches (not too difficult and highly effective). I forsee some serious surgery in the near future.

More parts just bought everything is mounting up in my bedroom now I'm actually gunna have to start fitting stuff soon lol my bedroom is a car parts warehouse

New G-Lader rear beam bushes

Home made manifold with vac ports for each inlet and i made vac port adapters to 4mm silicone vac hose.

New spare flyweeel being sent off for lightening and balancing this week

And also have a gt rear beam being couriered my way this week that will be strengthened and have my stub axle forward plates welded on and strenghthened and my rear disc conversion going on

oh and also i managed to get a full mk2 golf gti rear disc conversion including stub axles calipers, new disc, new pads and new bearings for £40 delievered mega bargain couldnt believe it

on ebay mate they are imported from america the guy i got it off only had like 3 i bought one and my mate bought another so he may have some more by now and you need the balast resistor with it.

head full stripped and cleaned umming and erring whether to get it skimmed yet.

new headbolts from vw ordered OMFG £76.50 for 10 fricking bolts

new windscreen seal ordered from vw £40 omg rip offfffssssss

rear beam delivered

and have just received my alloy 5 gallon fuel tank that will be fitted in the place of the rear wheel well heres a pic of it nice and shiny like

rear beam will be strengthened in the next two weeks and my forward plates welded on and strengthed to the beam. i will then put my new g lader rear beam bushes in and put this onto the car.

should have a full rear disc conversion arriving this week aswell when the guy gets his arse to move and sends it.

and just waiting on other parts really going to do what i can and while i have the welder out for the rear beam I'm gunna smooth the boot and probably weld up my rear window.

and also have my new green tinted windscreen to put in when i get the new seal.

Fuel tank tray for boot made and placed in position will be welding it in this weekend.

also received my new lightened and balanced flywheel back today courtesy of HotGolf on CLUBGTI thanks for that mate.

And also port matched my head to match the inlet manifold i made last week :) and also started porting and polishing it abit.

Enjoy il be doing more work this weekend mainly getting rid of rust and the big hole in my boot floor and hopefully smoothing my boot welding up the rear window and strengthening my new gt rear beam if i have time.

Had work this morning from 8 til 12 working at time and a half all to buy my new shiny ss 421 mani for the afh lump and then went wilco motor store and picked up some bits. Then off home to work on the car.

well at half 12 i started with this:

after some grinding and also some cleaning of the chassis rails as I'm removing all rust i started to weld the new fuel tank tray into place fully seem welded all the way around and then i hammerited it red to match interior colour of the car and it looks sort of factory me thinks.

After welding and before painting:

I have some nice soundproofing sticking back foam to go in here to line it all and then the fuel tank will be put in and secured in place think I'm either gunna run a strap over it or make some nice looking end clamps as i want it looking good beings it will be on display.

tomorrows plans are remove boot, flush it as its already de-locked and weld up rear window. then hopefully il have time to fit the front arb blocks.

I like what you have done with the fuel tank recess but wouldn't it have been better and safer to have it recess in the rear seat base?

Why would that have been safer and i would have had to really lean in to fill it with petrol and if i have my bmx in the boot i would have to take it out first to fill up. I did look into it alot and bought an alloy fuel tank the right dimensions so i could fit it in this place and also I'm putting my batter to one side where the seat recess is and i still have the backing plate of the seats in the car to keep the flooor level and its also a good place underneath it to store my tools.

Pete, regularly read your thread and like your work, however not trying to scare you , this is a polo i picked up which was sitting at some traffic lights, was rear ended by a 6n polo . You can see the damage ! I honestly had to let the tyre down fully and really lever it to get it out , i really think the damage would have been worse had it not been there, just a heads up , regards Mark

Todays update so I'm thinking i have done alot this weekend really heres todays contribution.

Got up at 9 and got out to the car and thought its a bit early to start grinding and welding so i decided to clean all the shit and burnt mastic underneath the back round the fuel tank tray. once this was all clean and mostly rust and crap free it was time to start grinding.

so removed the rear lights and boot and cut out the number plate recess area.

I then tack welded the sheet i had already cut to size and seem welded it top and bottom to finish it off.

i then cut out a plate the right size and shape for the rear window and tacked this in place, i then seem welded all the way around this.

Then I painted the underneath of the boot and fuel tray in some hammerite and wax oyl underseal stuff proper thick and not gloopy at all painted on really thick it was pretty good stuff and also reduces road noise.

Then i went to fit my G Lader ARB blocks but found out for some reason they wouldnt fit with the 4 speed arb the corners were too close so the blocks were sitting twisted.

I soon fixed this by fitting my new 5 speed arb and then finally fitted the blocks so hopefully these re center my front wheels and improve my handling a little bit

Thanks burt for your reply i have thought about this me and my dad discussed it and yeah it is a problem if that happens and i hope and pray it wont as it will right off the car and all the work I've done to it so far. But i couldnt really see another way round it tbh i mean i could put some strengthening rails in underneath to stop it crushing if i did get rear ended or when i finally put a cage in hopefully in the summer i could extend the cage and brace the boot section too. What do you think any other ideas would be helpful.

I'd have recessed the rear seats and dropped the tank in there, then you could run a fill through the doorcard and to the standard filler. You could use the boot normally then :-)

Why have you gone for a smaller, alloy tank anyway? The stock item is about the best (lowest) position possible and is very light even though it's 9 gallons.

Hey it never stopped Ford America building the Pinto! lifes a risk i suppose. I'm not sure about the extra strengthening might be something to consider, otherwise some kind of firewall between the front and rear? Cheers Mark

Interesting build so far, I'll be keeping an eye on this one as it progresses.

Nothing wrong with the tank moving in an accident,pushing through the panelwork,as long as the tank doesn't crush. So a tubular chassis/frame for the tank should mean its simply pushed through in the event of an accident,the way the seat of a Volvo fitted with SIPS is pushed accross in a side impact.

The most solid object it can then hit is the rear beam,which could be a problem even if the frame is ramped to go over it.

Or relocate it under the bench,and dont worry about the effort you put into the rear recess (I'm sure it'll still be useful for something).

I guess its your place to weigh up the risks,and how far to go about it. Or is it? If this is going on the road at all,you might run into legalities,but i dont know the technicalities with that.

Well my thinking is that people put alloy fuel tanks into there rear wheel wells on cars like ford escort's, fiesta's, 205's etc. So i have basically just made the rear wheel well square in essence and fitted a square tank instead of a round one which should crush less than a flimsy round wheel well as i have made the tray in thicker sheet steel that the wheel well was and i have weighed up the risks if someone did back end me it would write off the car and tbh it would kill me inside anyway after all the effort I'm putting into the car. I don't see how it wont be legal the boot floor is all solid and i can brace it between the chassis rails if needed in front of and behind the tank. I'm going to be using stainless steel braided teflon lined fuel hose with the special an6 fittings all throughout the fuel system so i cannot be smelt in the car and wont burst or get damaged in a collision i have checked this.

this gets better everytime i look going all out :)
