This is just a difficult situation your in, trying to meet the regs but if you keep at it you will succed and have a fooooking awsome, fast, well fabricated, beast of a car!

at the end of the day does it matter if its a Polo, Golf, Fiat, Rover whatever! I've seen an awsome bike engined chiquchento rip up a drag strip and that was sick!

there is an 8 points system and you need 8 points or more to avoid losing your reg and needing an IVA or SVA but if you alter the chassis in anyway even if you still have more than 8 points then you WILL need an IVA or SVA test.

so this includes: chassis notches, taking out the firewall/bulkhead bit as its structural, lightening it in certain places where its a structural point, removing rear wheel well as its also seen as structural.

I know some enforcement is needed but this has gone to far especially as the price of an IVA is £471.62 +VAT and £90 per retest its incredibly stupid just another way for the government to rake in money

The 8 point test has been in place for decades, it just wasn't really enforced as much as it could of been. All they are doing is tightening up on what is already in place, nothing to do with the EU. They had to clamp down on it sooner or later due to so many people building and using things like polo pickups on the roads without them being tested to see if it was even safe to use. How many pickup conversions have you seen wearing a Q plate?

Its not really chassis mods being discovered at a show that people should be worried about (there's only so much they can look for in a field), its more when they put a box on the mot for the tester to tick if the chassis is modded that people would need to worry about

I know the 8 point rule has been about for years but I'm on about the EU has basically caused IVA tests to be used instead of the old SVA tests which is the killer as its nearly triple the price and has alot of stupid rules put into also the fact alot of things contradict each other for example

Vosa say a Q plate car will pass an MOT with black and silver plates but the DVLA say that these can't be used on the road

vosa are the ones you need to listen too, DVLA are retards. It's vosa that will be testing the car

Building something like this is a mine field but that's exactly why you need to know and understand all the regulations that the car will have to be built to. So many people go flying in angle grinder first without know exactly what they have to do and then get caught out halfway through. A bloke on retro rides did this recently with a mk1 escort body dropped on to a butchered E36 chassis and then started reporting everyone else to vosa when he got caught out

I do think you shoudl have sat long and hard and figured out the cage etc, as it looks like you have just made it up as you've gone along.

Take the cage's PPP offer, all the strength you need and its minimal.

The thing is I am doing it all legit its just annoyingly hard to find out any real information I keep having to ring VOSA to check things

I know I dot need to listen to the dvla that was just an example but in that case the dvla are correct and it could cause people to get fines from the police

I will try Toby don't you worry and the idea was to get rid of the front chassis rails from the start of the 4wd stage anyways they are in the way and I've used them for all I need now as in mocking up new turrets and engine mounting so no longer need them and it clears up the front alot more

Just bare with me and see how it turns out and you will see what I've already got planned the front spaceframe isn't finished yet there is more to add.

I have been researching spaceframed for months now seeing all the various ones there are and I have a few links to builds of vw's with them generally golfs

Peter all I can say is keep at it. This is the most interesting build on here. Don't get run down by all these tests, when the going gets tough, the tough get going.. As they say.

just delete all evidence, tint windows and weld bonnet shut, dont tell anyone, no SVA/IVA needed

Surely with such heavy modification to the chassis a larger engine could be squeezed into this.

I dont think a 1.4 will be powerful enough for this car to be fun or competitive

Remember that you will lose some power through the rear drivechain.

Suppose its up to you really but your putting a s**t load of effort into spaceframing the car, so why not be in for the long ride and fit a bigger engine.

Lots of reasons why I'm not fitting a big block YET

the gbox can only handle 200-220bhp as said above

So why run a BAM 20vt when my 1.4 should hopefully hit around 200 bhp

It's less tax and will have better economy

It's less hassle to fit ATM

I've already spent alot of money forging an getting the afh ready for boost so why waste that and I won't get my money back

And I want a 1.4 nothing bigger for now

Also it will easily have enough power as the syncros only came with 90bhp standard in alot heavier car

So it makes sense

This will be immense and probably be a lot faster than some of the cars with higher power figures i think. IMO.

So many people chuck massive power into shit small old cars, FWD and spend forever not getting anywhere fast because it's just spinning or undrivable.

You can always improve, it's a case of what you want, I could fit a 20v in my car, or do a boosted 1.6, but I'm not really bothered about doing so :)

I was agreeing with Pete and supporting his engine choice, lots of things are possible but it's personal preference isn't it.

Have you considered using a charger Pete?

Yes I was originally wanting to twin charge it but was put off due to alot of twin charged engines have a clutch on the super charger to disengage it at a certain rpm

The main reason I don't want to run one would be they sap power from the engine to create it and with the 4wd already going to be sapping some of the power

Also turbo seems the best route especially for power delivery really and better tuning options and the fact it takes up alot less room in the bay

Yeah I've seen it toby but for me it's not worth it

It means you can run a lower CR and I bigger turbo and then it uses the supercharger for boost while the bigger turbo spools up

I looked into it quite a bit would love to do it but I just don't think it's worth all the extra hassle unless I was looking for mega power which I'm not yet
