so onto todays work

getting the engine and box in the bay to start mocking it all up makes the project feel like its really coming together now

so this morning it started off like this

IMG_2298_zpse7d54f67.jpg

IMG_2299_zpse244e477.jpg

got the engine and box bolted together then got it hoisted up on the crane

IMG_2300_zps9a287527.jpg

IMG_2301_zps20b47c26.jpg

IMG_2302_zpsd761b9c0.jpg

its a tight fit but it fits

IMG_2303_zpse46a8da7.jpg

IMG_2305_zps50e978d2.jpg

IMG_2306_zpsbfdda973.jpg

gearbox is a little close on this bottom chassis rail so I'm going to notch it and then strenghten it

IMG_2307_zps22e5b207.jpg

engine top mount side is also close but its alright

IMG_2308_zps4eb86bc9.jpg

then thought i would fit my top mounts and start mocking up suspension etc

IMG_2309_zpsa2017815.jpg

IMG_2310_zps216e9d91.jpg

suspension and hubs on

IMG_2311_zpsf810b0aa.jpg

IMG_2312_zpsedba0bb3.jpg

IMG_2313_zps9fe130d9.jpg

IMG_2314_zps037b249f.jpg

driveshaft angles without weight on the front end

drivers side

IMG_2315_zpsa9cd6708.jpg

IMG_2317_zps7c343c62.jpg

passenger side

IMG_2316_zpsf585aef9.jpg

IMG_2318_zps5d59bf6d.jpg

it looks like its actually going to be UBER wide

IMG_2319_zps8fd5268d.jpg

IMG_2320_zpse5490101.jpg

start of the new gearbox top mount

IMG_2321_zpsbeca191f.jpg

modifying engine top mount

IMG_2322_zps5b64fe55.jpg

engine and gearbox sit further forward in the bay due to the transfer box and the fact i made the front of the tunnel a little low

i should have made it taller at the front and taper downwards into the car oh well live and learn its no problem really just would have made it easier

IMG_2323_zps246af114.jpg

then got the adjustable TCA's and Compression struts on the passenger side to see where they will sit and to start mocking up the mounts

IMG_2324_zpsbc9012a7.jpg

IMG_2325_zps53074d44.jpg

IMG_2326_zpse36624ab.jpg

i then packed away more to come tomorrow as il be back on it in the morning after a quick trip to ECP for a gearbox mount to get that going

Lookin good mate do I spot a gearbox some ware near finale position??

Soon be rolin!...............

Edited by Mk2 olop

Looks like those front rails are going to be close to the floor there pete, or have you got aditional height you can get from the coils? Looks really good now with the engine/box in place. Almost like a car again!

  • Author

the front rails will clear the floor they are higher than the sills and the sills I'm aiming to be around 50mm off the floor so everything should clear

il see when i finally get it back on 4 wheels

I'm sure you have it all under control my man

  • Author

i hope so just got to wait and see but shouldnt be too long now maybe 3-4 weeks and il have a full rolling shell

i still wanna see you shut the bonnet! lol

good stuff though! cracking on son.

Another quick question Pete, how do you remove the bonnet hinges? I see they've gone awol in yours and I wouldn't mind getting mine out

Why not just mod things/move the clear things properly instead of compromising or notching things?

You'll regret it

Edited by harris.racing

  • Author

Nick its not things i can move and i am modding them by notching them its not compromising I'm doing it to just make a bit of extra clearance tbh i could get away without doing it but i want to for peace of mind

alot of it is a compromise theres somethings i would love to do but just cant with all number of factors stopping me but I'm working with what i have

if i was going to do it all again alot of it would be done differently but thats hindsight for you i am happy with the way its going and i still honestly cant wait to drive the thing

Simon the hinges are held in by a clip that pushes over the end of a rod that the hinges slide sideways onto as thats what they pivot on

watch out though as they can be covered in mastic and paint mine were and we need to sort payment for these bits mate my money is slowly depleting this month :(

and Eric just waiting on getting some wings off Guy then i can get all the front panels on to see how it will look and il get a pic with the bonnet on just for you

Mint.

Really looking forward to seeing this rolling

Nice work

Edited by bugpolo

where'd you get all the pipe from ?

thinking i might have a go at making a cage for my 6n but need some bits pre-bent

  • Author

I've bent it all myself I bought myself a hydraulic tube bender

And I get it from a local steel company

Cannot wait to see this thing man!

ITS MASSIVE!!

more progress yesterday and today Engine mount fabbing

so i had to modify the standard AFH engine side mount mainly because the engine sits further forward than planned so couldnt keep the mount standard but no problemo here it is and this was yesterdays work

IMG_2327_zpsca5b0a36.jpg

IMG_2328_zpse9cfcf8d.jpg

IMG_2329_zps435507c5.jpg

IMG_2330_zpsda91a941.jpg

IMG_2331_zps113e5aad.jpg

i used 3mm plate for it to make sure its strong and may add a little extra strengthening and if i ever need to i may make a whole new one from scratch but will wait and see how it holds up should easily be fine

i also wanted to mod the standard engine mount that holds the bush so it began

it started out like this

IMG_2332_zps6b7c5deb.jpg

and thats what i needed basically so i started modifying it so suit my needs better but still make the rubber bush easily replaceable

IMG_2333_zps20acfe77.jpg

jump to the end as i forgot to take progress pics but this is the end bush mount

IMG_2334_zpsfbc38295.jpg

IMG_2335_zps23af168a.jpg

IMG_2336_zpse537e5aa.jpg

IMG_2337_zps1e0930f9.jpg

IMG_2338_zps2e4222de.jpg

i will tidy it up more and all the mounts will be powder coated

now heres the mount fitted with the rubber bush and in place

IMG_2339_zpsb6ce35c4.jpg

IMG_2341_zps15aa3667.jpg

IMG_2342_zpscff2afec.jpg

IMG_2343_zpsa3c54fb2.jpg

now i started the gearbox mount yesterday i got the main plate cut to shape and the holes drilled to match the gearbox mounting

IMG_2340_zpseca9c5d4.jpg

this morning i then went to ECP to pick up my mk1/2 Golf gbox mount that I'm using for the quattro gbox mount

and also picked up a bit of tube from my steel place to fit the bush into

then the fabbing began

IMG_2347_zps29bbffce.jpg

IMG_2348_zpsa68f0e8b.jpg

IMG_2349_zps5390d235.jpg

IMG_2350_zpsa5735dfb.jpg

IMG_2351_zps8de74fd6.jpg

now with the bush semi press fitted and the mount in place on the gearbox in the engine bay

IMG_2352_zps2a2e77b0.jpg

IMG_2353_zps893a6d42.jpg

IMG_2356_zpscc53a39d.jpg

IMG_2357_zpsc9fb2ded.jpg

obviously needs neatenig up some more and will be powdercoated with the rest of the bits but I'm happy

then started the chassis mount that will hold the gearbox mount into the car

all marked out

IMG_2354_zps88381f04.jpg

IMG_2355_zpsc2b8f80f.jpg

thats all so far today as didnt spend all day on it but will carry on after work tomorrow and hopefully get them all cut out

now the mounts are practically done i can get the engine out of the bay and do the modifications i need to the bay

more to come so stay tuned

Sweet! Coming along nicely mate. Seems so far away to you i bet but it will be finished before you know it ha.

so quite abit done this weekend

Friday night

started off getting the braces made up for the rear TCAs etc and getting them welded in

IMG_2361_zpsa5ac36f0.jpg

IMG_2362_zps1a298f38.jpg

IMG_2367_zps9d2c9ae4.jpg

IMG_2368_zps26610060.jpg

also got the rear valance brace in

IMG_2365_zpsbfa07f87.jpg

IMG_2366_zps49b4efc9.jpg

got the gearbox chassis mount started too

IMG_2358_zps72d439d0.jpg

IMG_2359_zpsefd43e34.jpg

IMG_2360_zps23c7ad59.jpg

then Saturday I pulled the engine out of the car and pulled the chassis out of the garage so I could get to everywhere on it properly to do some more parts and finish off welding of the parts I couldn't get to in the garage

first off I got the notch in the chassis rail done for the gearbox clearance

IMG_2371_zpsc02c6835.jpg

IMG_2372_zps738e7736.jpg

and heres some pics of the car in the sunshine :)

IMG_2379_zps2a4afd09.jpg

then thought I would get some of the rust cut out from right at the back rear chassis rails and in the end decided to chop the rear valance off so I can just put a new one on and sort out the bodywork there properly later on and it will give me better access now

so rear rusty chassis rail bits off (last of the rear chassis rails)

IMG_2380_zps16516d9b.jpg

IMG_2381_zps2b18a075.jpg

IMG_2382_zpsf4f1d7b1.jpg

IMG_2383_zpsd780aed8.jpg

Rear TCA mounts all welded up on the drivers side now I have access

IMG_2384_zps1ee0cd12.jpg

IMG_2385_zps471f72f8.jpg

IMG_2386_zpscbee6c1b.jpg

IMG_2387_zps34901a62.jpg

I then packed away and put the engine back into the bay properly ready to get the gearbox chassis mount started in the morning

Sunday

first off the gearbox chassis mount ;)

IMG_2392_zps23832a24.jpg

IMG_2393_zps88b2e8e3.jpg

IMG_2399_zpsdc5fc61c.jpg

then thought I would pull the car out of the garage again to enjoy working in the sun

so with the chassis now holding the engine and box I had to put the rear diff in to counter balance it on the chassis Dolly

in the sunshine again but this time with the new front wings and front panel all in place (wings are thanks to GUY my hero)

IMG_2406_zpsf9262eee.jpg

IMG_2407_zps93512820.jpg

IMG_2410_zpsc643585c.jpg

engine clearance to front panel

IMG_2409_zpsb91397fa.jpg

radiator in place to mock up where to roughly mount and to see clearance theres not a lot

IMG_2411_zps01aa13d6.jpg

IMG_2412_zpsa0cf78c5.jpg

IMG_2413_zps1e487957.jpg

then thought I would put the head on with exhaust manifold to see clearance for turbo and there isn't any :/

IMG_2414_zpsff252993.jpg

IMG_2415_zpsf45c0a74.jpg

IMG_2416_zpsb5c1ceca.jpg

IMG_2417_zpsdad4ee83.jpg

loads of room for the ITB's and plenum

IMG_2418_zps8f88a3bd.jpg

gearbox mount in the light

IMG_2419_zpsbb1ac5bc.jpg

IMG_2420_zps8d3f28ff.jpg

engine mount in the light

IMG_2421_zpse67a0075.jpg

front end view with nearly full engine in

IMG_2422_zpsd33a08d7.jpg

then thought I would get started on the rear gearbox mount

turns out the 02M boxes just use a dogbone style mount and I thought screw buying one il make one and use the new gearbox mount I bought the other day

no progress pics but here is the finished mount

IMG_2423_zps84c85cbd.jpg

IMG_2424_zps296fd2fe.jpg

IMG_2425_zps3b9ded71.jpg

IMG_2426_zps497345d5.jpg

IMG_2429_zps54392e41.jpg

car back in the garage

IMG_2430_zps819a0c67.jpg

so a lot of progress

Still mental!

Pete, this is an incredible build. I'm excited for you!

Welding looks good mate !!

This beast is coming on in leaps and bounds great work!

I was clearing out my workshop and I found some chunks of billet alloy and 66 Black nylon,

Might come in handy some ware................

I just know plenty folk's are going to need to get used to a slice or two of humble pie!!
