    Who taught you to weld?

sheet steel for the floor pan now collected as well as more steel tube and that should practically be one of the last lots of tube I need probs just the odd few bits and bobs left to get really

got 1.2mm thick sheet for the main front side floorpans

and 0.75 for the rest of the floorpan to save weight

also to save even more weight and where I will want to remove parts of the floor pan for better access to underneath I will be using 1mm ally sheet

lets see how light I can make this tank now the weight saving can commence now most of the structural bits are out of the way

this is coming along looaaads since i seen this last!

  • Author

the 1.2mm sheet is now cut to size ready to have one side bent over to meet the sill properly and then just need to trim it to fit around the jacking points

it can then be fully spot welded in place once I get the car on its side still not sure how I will do this yet as I do want to make a car spit but will see what funding allows

also did a little tidying around the rear TCA mounts sorting out the last of the bracing just need to weld it all in place then the rear end suspension and wishbone wise is finished apart from making the steering tie arms which I just need to weld up quickly

  • 2 weeks later...

omg stinkey pete please don't give up with this build you have come so far with it i wait for it love it and want to see it finished

o top job on the steel fabrication side of things i wouldn't want to get it on a weighbridge when you finished tho

What's made you think he's going to ditch this?

  • Author

It's already been weighed in :(

Naaaaaaaaatttttttt I'm working on it right now and spent Saturday remaking mounts to sit the engine the 2 inches further back for more frontal clearance today I'm finishing remaking the front of the tunnel where I've altered it for the prop to sit in further

It's still going and il never give up on it don't worry guys

Il do a proper big update this week as I've been doing a lot of bits for it

  • Author

So new update time as its been a while due to doing a lot of work for other people so not a lot of progress on this for a while but I've been getting bits and bobs done

new main floor panels cut from sheet

using this bad ass tool (air shears)

8880108939_c475329aae.jpg

IMG_2698 by pjdirtjumper, on Flickr

then got the floor panels bent down one side to match up to the sill

IMG_2706 by pjdirtjumper, on Flickr

started stripping and sorting out the new driveshafts ready for shortening as the ones before had the wrong inner CV

these are Bora 1.8t ones and use the correct trapezoidal inner CV whereas the ones I made before used 100mm inner CVs and rather than making CV adapter plates its just as easy to shorten these new ones that are correct

8880703830_60397bec24.jpg

IMG_2710 by pjdirtjumper, on Flickr

driveshafts all welded up

IMG_2724 by pjdirtjumper, on Flickr

Moved the engine 2 inches further back into the bay also by firstly chopping out the firewall bracing I had fabricated and remaking it

this is how it began from last proper update

8880626018_545c703a68.jpg

IMG_2737 by pjdirtjumper, on Flickr

and this is how it stands now with all bracing redone and some extra bits added in

that's about it for now so hoping to get the front wishbone mounts welded to the frame this weekend and get the adjustable arms welded up then I can drop it on all 4 wheels and start getting the steering rack in the right place its a tight squeeze but I have it sitting in the rough place atm which is good

its starting to really come together now

also going to order some ally sheet to save some weight in non critical areas of the floor pan and have quite a few special titanium bolts on there way to me ;)

Love reading your updates, cant wait to see this finished, would love to come check it out.

Just keeps getting better :)

Keep at it Pete, there is light at the end of the tunnel haha. Looking awesome dude!

Solid amount of work going into this Pete - what's the reason for not going to a better suspension system (double wishbone for example) would be just as much work as this (maybe easier).

Pete

I'm in there also double wishbone stronger better handleing etc

Edited by g40dabbsy

Il be honest I would love to double wishbone it but having never tackled something like this before I just went for a simple tried and tested idea and there is always room for improvement in the future then

even if it means redoing all the suspension mounts to accommodate double wishbones

Il see how the car handles with all this setup and go from there really

Never know it might be great like this unlikely but you never know

Currently working on the car right now finishing the rear mount strengthening/triangulation and making rear tie arms

More updates this weekend
