Pete states that he will be most likely creating and end plate for that reason.

Seems to be moving on again pete which is great.

You still seem to be adding brace bars and extra supports..... More and more material and added weight?

Don't you wish you had of shaped the original bars different to begin with?

Do you still look or refer to other space frame builds? Such as the golf I showed you on edition?

Anyway, I am amazed at where your at with this, some fantastic workmanship and skill in some of the new stuff, I particularly love the idea of trying to convert to chain drive, If you get that to work problem free I will be impressed.

Be careful regarding the extra water pressure your creating by increasing the drive speed of the water pump, It was a set flow rate for a reason, too high and you could see problems.

    Who taught you to weld?

the water flow rate increase has already been done.

a few lads on the lupo forum have done it they use pulleys off Audi TT water pumps as they are the same profile just a smaller pulley.

mainly by people charging the gti and afh engines to help with the increased cylinder temperatures caused by boosting

Shaped which original bars better Dan

and a lot of the braces in welding in now have been in the plans generally since the start just not had chance to get them sorted. the material has been sat there quite a while waiting for me to get a chance to do it.

I know I'm adding a lot of weight but its extra strength and I already have plans of where I'm reducing weight from elsewhere

I will also have a lot less inside compared to a standard car

currently lightening my doors I'm aiming for fibreglass weight with them but obviously will be stronger still so around 5kg a door

il be having polycarb windows all around, lightened panels, lightweight ally roof, aluminium inside panels, lightening the shell as much as possible with drilling holes while also retaining strength by flaring the holes this will be a recurring theme around the car like most lightweight track cars. and lots of other weight saving happening too

Yep Ryan I will be replacing the plastic cambelt covers with custom ally ones I'm making to keep the chain setup sealed and it will be a hydraulic tensioned bathed chain setup

also sorting out a dry sump setup too as it seems to have a lot of benefits and will give me better clearance under the engine.

and now going to be running an audi tt rear diff, so I will have haldex but currently working with my dad to make my own manual/electronic controller for it

Awsome will be cool to see it all together, good work!!

This is mad

Have you thought of maybe using some ABS plastic or similar for interior panels instead of aluminium? Or maybe some thin carbon sheet for door panels etc?

  • Author

The aluminium sheet is only 1mm thick and really light plus the fact I've already bought it as needed it for other parts and il be using the excess for te interior panels so it's win win really

so thats the majority of work up to date also been planning the inside rear body work to close the shell off from the outside
buying parts for this is now on hold due to me trying to get the deposit for a house together
then once that is sorted i can finish buying parts
luckily I've got enough work left to do on it to keep me busy for quite a while but it may mean not being finished this year which is a bit gutting but a house is worth it.

Jeez dude hats off to you i haven't been on the forum for about two years and remember your first posts when building this i cant believe the route its going down now its amazing! Keep up the good work

Wow! Do you still have a lot to do?

Nice work, how are you mounting the windows now you have cut the doors out mate?

Is this planned on being road legal and MOT'd or just for track/sprint fun?

  • Author

I aim to have it IVA'd and all road legal not sure when it will be finally and may do an update this week if i can as alot of progress has been made and the shell isnt too far off being finished.

I cant wait for this update!!

Sounds good. I know the IVA can be a bit of a pain to pass at times. I know of a few Land Rover builds that have failed because wiring looms arent secured every 300mm and other petty things. Fingers crossed when it comes to it all goes well for you.

On a different note relating to another post regarding your engine build, did you get anywhere with finding valve to piston clearance on a standard cam AFH head on 1.6 bottom end?

  • Author

Yep going by all the rules for the IVA to try and pass first go but i doubt i will from readin up on it. especially as its more the testers disgression and opinion than an MOT but it is all safety after all and atleast i will know what to rectify.

no reply as of yet about piston clearance was just curious to see really especially because of this cam chain conversion il be running

and the fact I'm using GTI pistons in the 1.4 which no one really does as it drops the CR

  • 1 month later...

Looks good Pete, it's one of the only mk2 build threads I check up on!

Same as Jake and I am wanting an update!!!

  • Author

no update for a while as my laptops broke so wont be fixed until end of the month now when payday comes around.

lots of progress been made though and the engine is really coming on now with all the custom parts I'm making for it.

should really be one of a kind on the engine alone.

Ska_wars your point being ?

Don't feed the troll Pete your doing amazing mate far far better than many keyboard warriors on here.

good build just one thing about it i got to say is the welding is a bit poor some of it looks like the welds have a lack of penetration and thats no good for a rollcage (i am a welder aswell)

Were do you work Kev13?
