This is such a big conversion that it's not something just anyone would think of even trying people may ask about it but only some one who is actually going to go through with it will. Which is what I aim to do.

Anything I'm unsure about I have asked people on here or in the trade I've also put up posts on here asking specific things and gladly received answers and tbh I really do appreciate your input so please don't think I was being an arse with you

Pete are you on retro rides? If not you should sign up, this is the sort of thing they love on there and there are some very knowledgeable people on there when it comes to IVA's ect so it would make a lot more sense to ask questions about that side of things on there than on here

One thing I will say is find out which test you will need to get the car through and then find out exactly what you need to do to get a car through this test before you even think about making a cut. Many times people have got carried away with the grinder before finding out the precise requirements for the test and by the time they have its too late. Build the car to suit the test and you can't really go wrong

Interesting project this. And impressive to see you're doing it yourself too.

I have to ask though - why build the extra bits of cage to follow the shape of the square back end?

Surely the bits that need bracing are the bits between the front and rear suspension (which a six-point cage would do most of - just needing extra bars from behind the dash to the front shock turrets). And from a crash survival point of view if you roll it, then you want a protective structure around the front seats which again the six point cage covers.

Is it much of a problem if it crushes to a coupe shape if rolled? Surely the extra bit will just press against the main rollover hoop if rear-ended?

Happy to be proved wrong, and not looking to niggle, just curious that's all...

I'm mounting the rear suspension off the cage so the extra bars following the roof will have a brace lower down across top of the rear sus mounts when I do more and get more pics you will understand

I've already seen it done in the same sort of way on a rear engines mk1 fiesta so I'm not just making random ideas up and the fiesta was all road legal as in everything was braced off the cage not te chassis which is what I aim to do.

And tbh I I can't get it road legal then it will stay as a track and drag toy but I'm sure I will get it road legal web if it takes me a few years and some money and I know its going to end up q played which I wanted to avoid but oh we'll that's life just have to hope I can sort of choose the q plate lol

no update from the last 3 days got alot done on friday welding and cleaning inside up but rain stopped me saturday and today and sunday i spent with the girlfriend.

so whether its rainy as fuck or sunny tomorrow i am going scrappy in the morning to pick up some bits then getting on it with the rest of the welding and measuring up and will be getting more steel for more parts of the rear bracing this week also should be getting the new rear (front) coilovers end of this week so i can start getting stuff into place

and may have a design to mount the diff now think I'm going to use two rear landrover diff mounts only about 12 quid each and should easily hold the syncro rear as its alot smaller than a landrover one. may order them tomoz morning actually :) so i can try get this diff mounted maybe this weekend coming

oh yeah forgot to say I've also took out the seat mounting points in the middle of the floor too and will be removing all the slider bits tomorrow as i will be putting some tube across and mounting the bucket seats to some runners on these

The electric windows are an after market kit I fitted myself it's explained earlier on in my build thread I think and I did a topic in the tech section about it

well heres an update long awaited or not upto you guys as i know some people arent a fan but oh well doesnt bother me but for those of you who are interested i have got quite a bit done

020 syncro box being split for refurb/rebuild and to machine bellhousing for adapter plates to be made and fitted

started to cut out rear floor to mount diff and strengthen chassis

there is also another plate to mount the gbox at the front and i will be making a third brace for the back as I'm going to have to trim one of the standard gearbox mounting holes off as it blocks the rear transfer box abit

will hopefully finish cutting the rear floor out over the next two weeks around work and other commitments then i can get the rear diff mounted finally and start doing the new rear suspension

right little update just won an R32 propshaft on ebay for £20 and its around 40 miles away so pretty happy with this just hope the seller doesnt mess me around and will go pick it up next week happy times
