More work on the boot install today. Pretty happy with the way its going. Just hope, based on what has been said above, its substantial enough. Have braced the fuck out of it though, so fingers crossed!

Good weather (still) over the last few weeks means I've gotten the boards on the roof now. This will in time be covered in corrugated steel but for now it's reasonably water proof until I can get hol

Is that a drawer full of fancy musical equipment? :)

Indeed! All the amps. Wanted access to them without them being on display.

  • Author

Indeed I am! All considered.

Yeah, well at least my car isn't sky high!

This remains to be seen. I can't see it flexing much, not with the bracing and the covering etc. don't you worry. Maybe you'll get to see the expert craftsmanship you can aspire to one day  in the end I've had to mahea compromise between weight and functionality.

  • Author

As I've said, its a compromise between weight and sound. I know making it from thicker material would probably improve sound, however, it would be nearly 6 times heavier! I have to ask the question of whether the difference in sound is noticeable? Too many people claim to know about sound (and not just in cars) yet talk out their arses. TBH, if it sounds gash, I'll start again. But it won't, I'm sure of that. Equally, a mk2 is rattly as it is. Preventing the minimal flex will do little to overall sound. I'm not prepared to take the hit on the wallet, or performance that would be required to totally sound proof this beast!

Yeah man. Thanks for your input though. May still need some advice later, so may still ask for some advice :-)

She lives!! Likely totally alive, not coughing ans spluttering in her throes. She actually runs, all on her own! Amazing. And thank you CP-ers for the help earlier. Basically when I was last working on the engine she wouldn't idle, stuggled to turn over, lieky really stuggled and she was throwing fuel out of one of the breather pipes. Oh, and I'd bust my dizzy :retard; So today i installed a new battery (Bosch, Silevr) and it immediately turned over and its kept cranking all day. Amazing battery. installed new dizzy and she fired. Little lumpy, but not bad. However she still wouldn't idle. To stop the fuel pissing out the breathers, all over my bay, I had linked the two from teh top of the caers, so the fuel would run in a loop. Harris advised that these should be removed, so i did, and she immediately ran better, but still with leaking fuel. Checked returns: no block. Re plumbed the fuel system, still overflowing. Eventually i hauled the carbs off and checked the float bowl of Carb 4, and the needle was sticking. Got it out, little wet and dry, and back in. Jobs a Womble, and she idles. Faffed with the timing and idle mixture screw, and she's getting there. Will need to get the light on it next week and possibly play with cam timing, although this should be within half a tooth of correct.

Anyway, there should be a video below. As you can hear, theres no exhast, which is something else that needs fitting before I tune the carbs a little better. The inlet has a step in too that needs blending and the carbs are audibly unbalanced.

well done mate.

how rewarding does it feel having it all running after youve built it etc hey?!

was awesome the first time i got mine started up and a little rev!

  • Author

Totally. Just kept starting and stopping it to hear it fire up! After the time its taken, and all the problems, finally there seems to be a light at the end! That first drive will be EPIC!

haha i know what youre feeling, i had all this excitement then went on a rolling road LOL :(

  • Author

Maybe i'll keep mine away from an RR then :?

I think I have under lying issues mate, yours will probably make more power than mine haha

Nice work mate,

Make sure you run the engine in before doing any proper tuning.

Will this be at spring fest then?

There's no choice in the matter of spring fest, it has to be!

I love the sound when revved in the video! Looks lovely too

this is great to see simon! i remember seeing it on your engine stand last summer when i came down your way! glad its nearly there!

  • Author

Thanks boys. Hope to get it at sprinfest yes. I have the Easter holidays coming up, so get some serious work done then. Not sure whether It'll be re-sprayed by then though

Get it up and running for the strip, get it ran in and set up safe enough, fuck audio etc haha

  • Author

As soon as the exhaust is on and the brakes are done, I'll throw her into the spray booth and sort the audio whilst its being sprayed. Will need to sort some wheels at some point

Fantastic news Si

I'm so happy for you, looks and sounds superb.. even with no exhaust.

Who will be painting the car?

  • Author

A mate of mine, Garry Heartwell. He restores water cooled VWs, quite a big name in the scene (Tubbs Dubs if you've heard of him). I'm doing all prep, masking etc and he's literally just going to blow her over. Need to keep costs down!

Were you at UD higgo? Sure I saw your Mk1. If she's at springfest, I'll give you a run up the strip? Monaco blue drag race! Good test of the 8v vs 16v! Though I'm no pussy and will be keeping all my interior in!

higgo's going down at spring fest! mwahaha

  • Author

I'll attempt to fly the 8v flag then! He has the advantage as his is lighter, and he wimps out by stripping the interior

SPRINGFEST. ON IT.
