Definitely the best looking bay i've seen up to now IMO, looks right at home, period as you say.

Not that you should listen to anyone else's opinions on looks etc, but I'd leave it at that for the polishing, people seem to think there engine bay looks the best because of the amount of polishing and smoothing they have done.

I know i am months behind on this thread but seeing as i am just flatting back my engine bay i thought id comment!

Your engine bay is outrageously nice mate... if i can get mine anything like that then i would be over the moon! Did you filler, primer, key it and then spray it in cellulose, 2k or the new waterbased stuff?

Its regatta blue yeah so is it painted then laquered straight on top?

Dizzy will be black. My fingers can't take anymore polishing and its a ballache of a shape to do. I daren't take the vacuum unit off either as I've never had luck reassembling them! Can never get that arm thing to re-engage with the plate inside :reatrd:

Shipley - thanks for the endorsment of the bay. Regarding the prep work, I removed all of the seam sealer (not too good for longevity ) then smoothed the area as you said with filler. Etch primer where there was metal, 2k primer, 2 or 3 coats, and then the same with 2k topcoat. Which is actually monaco blue. I didn't use any laquer however, the 2k gives a good finsh. I did 1200, 1500 and 2000 the paint though. Then cut back with G3 cutting compound, polish then wax

Oh right... how did you get on using the 2k?

I was planning on using it for DIY (I've got a compressor and gun) as you dont need to bake it or do as many coats.

But reading about it has shat me up a bit as i didnt realise how toxic it is...

Did you have access to a proper spray booth, full plastic suit and breathing apparatus or anything like that?

Nope! I lifted the front of the car into the garage, and then made a booth around that. No suit and used just used a couple of dust masks whilst spraying. I know, not the safest way, and in future, I will be using a proper respirator. TBH, I was spraying and holding my breath at the same time

2K is very easy to use. Gives a good finish, even with an amateur like me in charge, with my budget equipment. You can get it in an aerosol too, so have a play about

hope your using an air fed mask when spraying 2k! if not do yourself a massive favour and get one, tis really dangerous stuff

It does look insanely awesome. But just can't help but notice the colour coded offside engine mount.

I think it would look better silver, and a nice stainless washer, just my opinion though!

I will certainly take better precautions with the 2k in future. The geezer in the body shop place said that I should be ok as I'm not spraying all the time. However, it's on my list.

I see you point with the mount max. All the mounts (bar the rear g.box) are colour code though, so it kind of works. Probs will go for a stainless washer. But currently it's covering up a bit of chipped paint

It should be more than 'on your list' Si! Your still pretty young, so don't want to be spending the next 50 years with a lung condition that could have been 100% preventable. The absolute minumum for spraying 2k is an air fed mask, lint free disposable overalls and a pair of disposable gloves. Iso cyanates (the nasty stuff in 2k) can be absorbed through skin aswell as breathed in. Make sure you leave the car and good long while before entering the room without an air-fed mask on and don't ever lift the mask whilst spraying, not even for a second.

Cheers jon. I think I'll be spraying with celly in future! Really dont have the money to invest in all the safety precautions required to make that safe. A mask I may get, but the neccesity of a booth seems to great, and I can't afford that! Even with the repeated discussions with my local body shop and supplier, these hazards have never really been made clear

And haris, no. I dont think so. The wheels are in a right state, and the tyres haven't even come yet! No miles on the clock and the pissing thing won't even fire up now. Grrrr!
