Oh, and my mate spotted these stainless jubille clips for a £1 each at a market in Lymington. They fit the groove in the carb rubbers perfectly, and being stainless, match the inlet he made too!

What paint did you use by the way?

On the engine? Its chrysler blue, by por-15 engine enamel

I bought 10 stainless clips like them off ebay for about £2

May have to invest in some yellow or red paint by them then :-D

It did to the bulk head, but I had to cut about an inch an a half off the input shaft thing from the pedal

Been a bit quiet lately on here, so thought I'd add a bit of an update.

Being a workshire teacher, I'm now in my summer holidays (of which 2 weeks have already gone!) so I'm devoting lots of time to the 'loon. This week has mostly been spent re-painting the engine bay here....

.....as I just wasnt happy with the previous results. The respray is far form perfect, but better than before. So I'm leaving it. I then spent wednesday cutting it back, polishing and then waxing the engine bay. No pics, as it basically looks like it did in photos, but it is insanely shiney on the slam panel. Really recomend meguiares products a lot. Very east to use and give a great finish.

Also sprayed the inside of the bonnet as it was a little grotty and rusty in places.

Today was an eventful one as I took a trip to pick this up

I had always wanted a stage 3 but couldn't justify the cost, but the price was good and because of this....

...and the resulting whiplash (sic) I got a tasty pay out. So I couldnt really say no. I know folk have issues with the PPS stage 3, but for what I want it for, it's going to be more than good enough. So the white bready is slowly getting broken, but I have a 9n now, so keeping it VW. Into which I have installed this...

...tasty little number. Basically controls an iPod and has a colour screen. eBay billy bellend bargain too! Once the loon is done, it will make the move over to compliment the other ice (shown in previous replies) or I may buy another one! Really recomend it as a piece of kit though for anyone playing music from an iPod.

And a cheeky before and after of some square head lights. I have 4 of these, one of which was an NOS

So thats it for the pictures, but I have been doing other things too. The biggest of which has been the wire tuck. I've gone from the scuttle into the wings from both sides, and then popped back into the back just under the headlights. This is in a bid to hide 90% of the wiring. However, I'm having to swap over to the later style ignition, and I have no idea how it all wires up! I was using everything from the bready and moving it over, but the looms appear to be very different, with different colours and everything. So thats a head ache I'll have to deal with.

With action (an more importantly Reading Festival) fast approaching, I'm setting these as my deadlines (hopefully reading, more likely action!). So to do is

Brake caliper adaptors for girling 54s

Bend final brake lines

Drop engine in

Paint gear box and misc items in the same colour as the engine

Tart up and install the subframe (with additional washers to reduce lateral movement due to elongated holes in the front mount points)

Install ICE

Deck the boot out

Custom door cards

Wire it up

Hang exhaust and elongate to reach under rear bumper

After all this, I'll take to the RR to get properly set up. Then I'll work on installation of the MK1 polo dash and cusotm gauges. Then recruit the old dear to re-trim the seats

So not much to do but I can see the light at the end of the tunnel, just!

Not since the respray. There are the ones on the previous page after the first time i did it. It practically looks the same in the photos!

Minor update - replaced broken ring in cylinder 3. All bolts to be torqued up and she's ready to drop in!

Also collected uprated rear gbox mount today. Also have decided to spray the engine bay again. Still not happy

Big end and head bolts torqued! Going to time her up tomorrow! And spray that bay for the final time!!!!

Got rid of a few parts from the bready too, sad to see her broken, but parts seem to be going to good homes. In fact the chap who picked up the seats today (erixtar1992) took me for a spin in his mk2 with bike carbs. It was only a 1.3 with gt cam but it flew! Gave me a taster of what I can expect!

Well i didnt get her times or sprayed due to windy weather and the motorfactor having no cam belts. All is good as I'm picking one up tomorrow, along with a new tensioner stud from VW

Anyhow, that doesnt mean I have been idle. I have been concentrating on the braking system instead. First off are adaptor plates for the front 256mm conversion. The idea was to make a similar shape adaptor to that of the caddy 280mm upgrade and then use the original carrier mounting holes. However, this meant the pads fouled on the bottom mounting lug/bracket on the hub/strut assembly. Out comes the grinder and drill!

Her you can see one lug has been partially removed just below the orignial threaded hole, and a new hole has been drilled.

Next i fabbed up a cardboard template to allow the fitting of the girling 54 caliper

And how they sit. Going to make a set up in ply wood and then take them to a local metal worker. If they work well, I could be selling these on demand

I made the final push on the brake lines today. Have been putting it off for ages since long lengths of copper are a bastard to use! However, it was only the final front-to-rear that needed doing, and only as far as the regulator. Managed to get one done just now, and install it into the bay. Looks real good imo

Also been freshening up the subframe with a blowover of hamerite black

And because max asked nicely, I have a few shots of the engine bay, again! but after the re-spray

Also swapped over the early type dash with the horrible plastic for a later one. IMO the plastic is of better quality. Didn't bother with the glove boxes and lower cubby though, got a cheeky plan for those, but that will have to wait!

So tomorrow I'm collecting the cam belt and tensioner stud, and installing the GT cam. Engine may be ready to go in by the weekend, which will be lovely along with the box and brakes.

Right, productive few days here. This will be the last picture update before action, as I'm hoping to 'Debut' there, and wouldn't mind leaving a little to the imaginiation of a few of you who have been following this.

Finished the brake line bending and installation yesterday. All thats left is to await the arrival of my braided lines. Also orderd some new caliper pistons and bleed nipples since the old ones were damaged when being removed. They weren't cheap I'll tell you. Prepped and sprayed the calipers/carriers too. Only showing before shots

As you can see, engine mounts and starter are also being sprayed too

As well as the gear box and output flanges

Went to install the GT cam yesterday too afer getting hold of a cam belt and tensioner stud. Bloody stripped two stud threads on the bearing caps though not sure how, as they weren't torqued up at all. So had to order some more from VW, but they have a stock take tomorrow, so its monday at the earliest. Bugger. Still, plenty to do before then!

I will continue to update as and when. Hopefully a vid of it running next week.

Installed sub frame yesterday so much easier than dicking about with an arb and all! Happy with that. Finished spraying the brakes. G.box etc and trial fitted the gearbox mount, purely to see the colour combo the bay will be rocking. Looks good IMO. Ordered brake pistons from BiggRed on Thursday, and they came Friday. Shame they were the wrong ones. What god giveth with one hand, he taketh with the other I guess.

Today saw me get angry with BiggRed as not only had the sent the wrong pistons, but also the seals. So I decided to remove the wings and go about plunbing the fuel system in. Removed the driver wing and drilled a few holes in the 'jacking' point under the car. Then drilled into the main monocoque and brought the fuel lines inside the wheel arch, and then into the battery tray. The facet was then installed next to the battery. The wiring has also been brought inside the wheel arch, but that was done ages ago.

I did manage to put the girling54s back together. I'm reluctant to use them now! I bought an old astrali steering wheel with vw boss ages ago, but it was a small spliner. It never made it onto the old bready as that had the later big spline. However, the loon has an older small spline and the wheel fits. So armed with autosol and the dremel, I got to work! Quite shiny if I do say so!

Foam for door cards came today as well. Hope the vinyl comes Monday so I can set the old dear off re-trimming the door cards whilst I go away for a few days!

I had planned to do the same thing as you with the fuel lines and pump but then bottled it because I was worried about putting fuel and electrics in the same place. Couldn't quite figure out if mr mot would have a problem with it.

I love where this is going, I'm going to keep an eye on this one!

Not sure whether any mot tester would be able to recognise it as a fuel pump and how it's plumbed in. It's all going to be hidden anyway. I was a little concerned about electrics and fuel, but it shouldn't leak, and the battery shouldnt spark spontaneously, so I judged it to be safe. No way am I cluttering the bay with unsightly pumps!!

Finished the wire tuck today, as well ad working out all the wiring. I had stupidly ripped it all out and forgot to take photos. Luckily I have another mk2 sat on the drive that I could refer too. Still, it's no easy job comparing wiring looms! Especially when the carbs are to be different! Still, all done now. I'm going to test what electrics I can tomorrow just to make sure it all works.

Also bought the hardboard for the door cards. Awaiting the arrival of the vinyl so I can make a start on some custom cards. Hopefully the mk1 golf arm rests will come too :-)

Going away for a few days, so need to make tomorrow count if she's to be ready for action. It's going to be tight!

Slow day today. Tarted up the carbs by repainting some parts satin black and polishing a few parts that are visible. Also collected my repair-hanger to make my Ashley system fit. Other than that, not much else happened, have been getting ready for my holiday. Then it's 5 days of graft before info to reading. Really want it running by then

Last few days have been a real test of my patience with this car, and i'v been questioning my own abilities! So many stupid little set backs (like losing the washer for my grinder) have had me going mad. So very little has really been done.

However, today has been much better managing to;

Wire in the fuel pump so it runs of the ignition

Fully rebuilt front and rear brakes with seals and new pistons

Made handbrake car adaptors for the rear discs

Added fuel filter to the fuel circuit

Fitted 1.4 thermostat (much tidier)

Fucked about timing the engine, but got stuck as I don't have the can belt cover. Managed to get the bottom end to 90deg before tdc, but stuck bow

Finished off the gearbox with new end plate

That's about it. Borrowing an engine crane tomorrow, so hopefully the lump will be in and I can eventually get a feel for the ride height
