Well if it is running lean you might want to sort it out before the engine heat seizes or some thing melts

Good weather (still) over the last few weeks means I've gotten the boards on the roof now. This will in time be covered in corrugated steel but for now it's reasonably water proof until I can get hol

Garage all painted (I'll get pics) and the car is moving in on Sunday. I may even get to work on it over the summer ;-/

Yeah.

Mines on the standard jets which are 4x135's, and thats on the verge of being lean, his may have the 138 jets which i would have still thought wouldnt be enough

Had 145's in my afh and that was slightly on the rich side, probably perfect for a 1.6

Let me clarify this is just running on the drive, considering yesterday's discussions

I'll check jet sizes and report back. It smells rich, lots of unburnt fuel coming out the back! Would it being lean cause it to cut out? Or could it be that running too rich is fouling the plugs up? I'll pull them out and have a look.

On the other hand, all this static running has proven my fan works! Gauge still reads a little hot though :?

Running lean will cause it to run hot. it cutting out and struggling to turn over could be it over heating, not in the coolant temp sense, but components inside over getting far too hot. The fuel actually acts as a form of cooling to an extent and too little of it will cause things that to get a lot hotter than they should.

This is just a suggestion tho as its hard to diagnose shit like this without actually being there, but I would suggest not running the engine until you know for sure as you risk full on engine death if your not careful

Does it smell rich or does it smell hot? Could the fuel smell just becoming from the carbs? Also are you sure that's unburnt fuel and not condensation from it standing?

Cheers guy. The smell is that of unburnt fuel, although saying that that's only when it's cold. It does kind of smell hot, but there's oil on the exhaust etc, so a load of smells floating about! I'll lay off running it until I've ha a chance to check the jets out etc.

What jets are you talking about? This is all at idle right? You really need to get some apparatus to check the mixture before you start running it for long periods of time. These are a set of carbs from a bike so they're not in any way going to be meeting the AEE's fuelling requirements as standard!

Do bike carbs have mixture screws etc? Get yourself a cheap "colourtune" kit, they're OK for this sort of thing, untill you get your self an A/F metre.

Cheers mate, just sorted my last major issue (bar the gears). Fitted a different alternator and now I have battery charging! Wohoo! Just the gears now

Ooooh, bootlid. Yeah I'll take that fams. I'm away on holiday from Monday for a few weeks, so may be an issue receiving it :? Did you still want that tow bar?

I have a colour tune, maybe I'll have a pop with that. Just going to check the jets now and drill some out if needed

Tut tut bad practice.

Hope you do it with a lathe!

It's just to get it running better. The jets are tiny, and I don't have a lathe. All done, 1.5mm. Yarris recommended this as a good start point

for you sir, i can hang on to it. yeah - would love the tow bar. i'm trying to clear some space so i can fill it up with other stuff - perfect! give me a shout when you get back and we'll sort out monies etc

Hows it running now?

Still hot and spluttering/cutting out when warm. Especially if I hold it on open throttle for a bit. What colour should the flame be with a colour tune, blue right?

Blue with a slight tinge of orange

Oh, is there any easier way to get the jets out? Pissed at having to take the carbs off every time

Not really mate haha. The annoying part i find is draining the fuel out lol

Are you sure your timings correct mate?

Aye, erics got a point, over advanced & retarded ignition timing will cause excess tempretures.

Does sound like its running lean though, have bike carbs got mixture screws, what effects the mixture at idle?

Changing main jets is gonna do fuck all if so!

  • Author

There is an idle mixture screw in each carb. There's also a cable that adjusts the idle too, but that works by opening up the throttle butterfly. Why do you need this adjustment if it's the main jet that's the problem?

Put the idle mix screws about 2.5 turns out and see how she runs.

Aso have a play with the timing if its backfiring out the trumpets

Well in conventional carburetor's don't use the main jet until circa 2000RPM, so if your leaving it idling and its cutting out etc, i don't think the main jets are to blame. What does nick say? He wasted months tuning them

the main jets dont come into play Si till your over at least a quarter throttle so if its cutting out when warm just on idle its definately not main jets

Did he not say it was doing it while driving too?

Have you done anything to set these carbs up for your engine or are they still exactly how they left the bike?

Edited by Mclovin

i dont think he has driven it yet as no mot or anything i think he has just been revving it on his drive
