Because I want the interior to look as period as possible. I don't want flashy gauges all over the place!

In the late '80s, Ford used to sell a stereo cover which, instead of being plain, was dressed to look like a really basic old '70s radio. Might still be able to get one, it'd suit the interior!

Well, been in this with help this morning, and it seems, under full throttle under load, the carbs are being emptied too fast for the pump to refill. My pump is mounted quite high, so I'm going to lower the pump to within the 12" recomended height and see if that helps.

How do you know this then?

T-Peice position, shape and size will effect fuel flow to carb(s) too, so check that.

Because when it died after a short burst under load, the plugs were dry (however very rich due to coking). The fuel line is 1/4", so that ought to be ok.

Put a loop in the return so the carbs are the easiest route for the fuel

A loop? How do you mean? So the fuel needs to go uphill down the return?

Well this didn't sort the problem, but I'm pretty sure lack of fuel is the issue. The carbs are emptying faster than they are refilled, and I'm sure its the way the pipes are arranged thats the issue. I went for a quick drive around the village, and it would die. But waiting a few minutes meant the car would start up. This kept happening on my way round the villlage, stop start etc. and the symptoms as it stopped were the same; loss of power with the engine spluttering. However, it wasn't just happening under big load, but at low revs, mid-range or top end. I'm sure its not blocked jets, but rather something to do with supply. So I'm unsure if it needs a bigger pump, larger fuel lines or the lines re-arranging, or possibly a swirl pot, though I'm pretty sure this will be emptied too. Will post a thread in the engine section

Eric: yes i think it may be. Well one of two. There has been a few electrical grmelins with a bad Earth that I think was giving me a starting issue. I put the two together and came up with the idea it was getting hot and not starting until cooled. However, I think the electrical problem was causing the non-start, and this fuel problem causing the dying

Reloacted fuel pump

Only place I could think to bring it back within 12" of the fuel tank without being in the engine bay. Hopefully it's a fit and forget item as it's a bugger to get at!

Just received my AEM AFR gauge simon, looks spot on, and it pretty small actually, just the size of a usual gauge, will easily fit somewhere un-noticed if needed.

Still considering an AFR, but just had to tax the 9n to the tune of 100 bob Seem to be making progress with the problem, so AFR will likely wait until after it's sprayed. Thats the priority once I can get it running long enough to get it MOT'd and to my grans garage (lovely double!). Where's you gauge going?

No GTi this year. Going on a field trip with work to study Succession of a sand dune and hone our ecological research techniques. I got my dates mixed up, thinking GTi was this week.

I want the fuel pump hidden, and withing 12" so this was the best place I could find without it hanging below the car, or in the engine bay!
