I'm thinking a ground down screw driver may be the best bet. The other set were fine, could easily fit a driver between the carbs. No idea how you adjust them on a bike without having the airbox off

Thanks Jake. Last few days I've been putting the doors up. Apart from a few small things it's done

Good weather (still) over the last few weeks means I've gotten the boards on the roof now. This will in time be covered in corrugated steel but for now it's reasonably water proof until I can get hol

Garage all painted (I'll get pics) and the car is moving in on Sunday. I may even get to work on it over the summer ;-/

How tight is it for space btw?! So rough, i've got a wee stubby one (cue jokes) but I can just get in enough. Adjusting the idle jets are rough too. :(

Idles are easy since my bay is pretty bare, with no header to get in the way. It's not space behind the carbs I lack, but getting a screw driver down between each carb. 3 are ok, but one is pulling less than the others. Still runs smoother than I ever had the other one doing!

You referring to balance screws? Mine are awkward, especially carb #4 due to shape of bulkhead.

  • Author

Yeah. Mine are practically impossible to get to, especially with the bottom of the airbox on

Pics then simon!

A screw driver bit and one of them long universal joint things work best

Then you can see how many turns your doing.

Reluctant to put pictures up as the carbs look like shit! Just wanted them on so I can get her on the road.

Lol well the offer still stands, if you want to send them me i can have them posted back out the next day?

  • Author

Thanks. How clean does it get them, are we talking gleaming?

Simon

It cleans the internal passage ways an stuff well mate, will bring the castings up a lot fresher too.

You could get them hot washed too like they do with engine components, but generally sonically cleaning carbs is the way forward, it's always how I used to clean my kart's carbs between rebuilds..which were temperamental as fuck!

Look at breadies build thread, the last photo is of the carbs after they were cleaned. I'm talking thoroughly cleaning them, all the circuits and reserviors, jets, needle jets etc. It will only remove contamination. If the casting is old and dull then you need to polish them etc.

I do the cleaning myself, got my own "pickler" in the lock up...

should get the casting soda blasted or whatever its called

  • Author

Now you say that eric, but I'm sure thats what fucked them before. I attempted that soda blasting thing but I'm not sure it did the carbs much good. Maybe I didn't do it properly

What do you pickle with the Max? And is that part of the sonic cleaning process?

cant you like acid dip them or something then??

maybe you could get them blasted, and THEN send them to max.

then again, the car runs! just chuck some paint on them and leave well alone! haha

Eric might have a good point

"Pickle" was just a term mate. They basically get put in a bath containing a solution of surfactant and water at around 80deg

Stay in there as long as it takes for them to come up well. Then its just a case of rebuilding them.

I'm going to for now. I will hopefully be re-spraying around Xmas providing these carbs work out. The engine will need to come out, so I'll look at cleaning and detailing them then when I can send them off or whatever.

simon. leave the engine where it is ffs. just get it on the road.

I'm not using it over the winter and I want it looking fresh!

you can do the rest with it in the bay though!!

  • Author

The bay needs re-doing. And I need to replace the front valance as mine's all bent up. Going for bolt on and bolt on slam panel i think

Still doesn't work, pissed off with the whole Fucking thing. It's running smoother, so the carbs have remedied that. But it still cuts out, but restarts after letting the pump pump for a while. Think I'm going to fuck the t-piece off and try a bike pump. Either that or a swirl pot, or even a restriction in the return line. Seems any mug can get these working except me :-(

Oh dear mate. Thats no good.

  • Author

No it's not. I just can't see what I'm doing wrong. I have read every guide, picked everyones brains and recreated the T-piece method as other people have and it's no better. It will go along for a while, but any longer than a few seconds at what and it splutters and dies. I'll have another go tomorrow and check if the float bowls are dry. They were with the old carbs, so to make sure it's the same issue, I'll need to check them. No good throwing more diollar down the shitter to get no better results.

Another boring update
