So the weather's been lame the last few weeks and I've not been able to make any progress bar emptying my bank account. Any road, I have half term this week and my dad has been kind enough to let me work in his double garage/workshop so i can make some progress

Currently being heated by a couple of oil filled heaters meaning the filler/paint/stopper is actually workable!

So attacked the other sill/side today and yesterday

Both sides have now been treated to a coat of grey stripe mastic. Hopefully keep them in good condition for a few years

Also have some plans for a tarty clock set up (similar to Gaz's). Can you guess what it is...?

Few more other jobs done too, but that's under wraps for now

Hoping to have the car practically ready for paint by the end of the week. Then I move it to my grans in a few weeks since she has a double garage too, and the place is empty for a few weeks. Just so much to do, the current paintwork is shite. must have had a shoddy repair at some point as there's at least 3 different shades of blue on it!

Quite a few Max. The one it's in now is really nice. Fully insulated with just about any tool you could want. Most importantly its dry

Yes I am Eric. Are your stalks the same as the ones in my picture? The clocks are pretty rare/expensive but (and providing mine work as they should) I got quite a good-ish deal.

More work on the driver's sill today. I can now appreciate why bodyshop prices are so high. Spent the best part of 8 hours just preparing one sill, endlessly filling, sanding, filling, removing shoddy old paint, filling, smoothing....

A small hole I fibre glassed over. Not the best way to repair I know but I can't weld and don't have the time to take it to a body shop. The hole was very small (5mm) and it won't be easily seen as it's on the underside of the sill. First time I've used GRP and, although difficult to sand, it's easy to use

Just before I left I gave the underside another coat of mastic and a couple of coats of primer. If i wasn't before, I'm fully commited now! I'll move on to the other side tomorrow/thursday. That one doesn't seem to had shonky spray job like the drivers side so should be easy(er) to do

Prep work is all the work. spray a entire car in around 1 hour lol. Prep it in about 24 lol

I have a month So it's not looking good ATM, especially as I haven't made up my mind on paint yet. If I can get this rust prep done this week, I'm in with a shout providing everything else comes together

just get it covered in something and bring it out haha. shoulda seen mine when it was a work in progress 50 shades of blue/primer/filler

1 month is optimistic to say the least! not the best time of yer for doing this- if i was you i would be doing this bit by bit! any panel left exposed for any amount of time in this weather could be in danger of moisture entering it.

Yeah, i wouldn't wanna be painting unless i had somewhere warm and dry to be doing it.

Giving it a quick coat in paint to protect needs to be done though, just don't go for a good finish.

Don't forget, primer is porous.... ull be doing it all over again if you leave it in just primer, esecially with salt on the roads.

If it were me, id have left it until after winter.

It's all been considered, hopefully. I will be doing it a panel at a time, then rear quarters/sills in one go. There will be somewhere dry and warm to spray and it will be stored outside, under cover for hopefully a month max (which means missing UD). So fingers crossed she won't suffer much. I'll also leave her to dry for a few days before adding more paint and won't be driven in the wet. Any other advice, I'm all ears

The deadline relies on other people unfortunately. As soon as the garage is available I'll get cracking. But I think your right kiz, a month is probably a little optimistic

Really good to see large chunks of progress mate, bet you're dying to get it done now considering its on the road anyway - is there not a way you can get a few oil filled electric radiator heaters on in the garage for a few days to bring the air temp up?

Thanks Nick, feels really good to make some progress. I'm not arsed about using it actually as it was never meant to be used in the winter. The salt will play havoc with the paint/wheels and it's just not as reliable and comfortable as the 9n. At least having long holidays means I can use it plenty when the weather is (hopefully) good.

The radiators have been heating the garage, it's the time in the garage I don't have. My dad doesn't really want the car hanging around for too long and he needs to move his Kit Car in. It's too small to spray the whole car in anyway, can't really get to the rear quarters.

Anyway, put some colour coat on the sills to prevent moisture being absorbed (as per advice above). Quite a good finish considering it was celly from a can.

Plenty of overspray on the doors, but this is a temporary measure. Bought some stone chip too to recreate that orange peel look and further protect the sills. Need to find a schutz gun now. And VW heritage finally pulled there finger out and sent my new front panel out. Should be here next week then I can start sorting the bolt on front panel arrangement.

Indeed they are Eric. Not sure what I have regarding a 'G40' one, but my AEA one is a 4 spring.

Pete, the panel was £36 plus delivery, but its a pattern. Apparently the genuine ones are no longer available, but it's worth ringing up as I've been told multilple stories from their end. I just hope the pattern part fits ok

Rolled her out of the garage and drove her home today to be stored under cover for a few weeks until the other garage becomes available. Providing the weather holds up, I may start spraying smaller panels under my gazebo in the mean time. Tidying up the sills does so much to generally making the car look better
