Being really rich wont help at all, even the difference between 10:1 and 11:1 is ridiculous, part throttle.

It just tops out so early, and I don't think it's the gearing as i think I have the long ratio box with 'economy' final drive. It was struggling fo 70 on the dual carriageway. The RR of the wheels is smaller I know, but not enough to cause this problem. The torque is impressive mind, just pulls so well. I can take off in third and not know it

Yeah being rich part throttle sucks majorly, so sensitive to needles.

Guy at work has a bike engine in an MX5, and naturally pulling away is a bit of an issue with such setup, but just tweaking needle heights made a difference between just being able to pull off smoothly or having to rev it and slip the clutch and it bogging etc!

I'll try myself and see if I can get it better than it is. If I want to fine tune, there's a place in Southam that Mark recomended. I don't really want to spend huge amounts as I'm looking to change engines soon. Who knows, I may yet go for an AFR.

Are needle heights adjustable with standard needles?

You have to put shim washers underneath them, though this is going to be making it richer.

My first set of carbs came with what looks like aftermarket adjustable platform needles, though these are not being used.

A mates car that i've set-up has been transformed the addition of 40mm longer slide springs, and a slight modification to the needles.

Get a wideband and do it yourself, its childs play!

Longer springs? Could the same be acheived with stiffer springs of the same length as the originals? Where did he get his bits from?

And the old panel, you can see where all the spot welds were, close to 40 in all. Had to take a chisel to a few parts and bend it to get access. So much for minimal damage!

And the new panel. I'm sorry to say the quality is pretty bad. I ordered this back in september and it only arrived wednesday. To make things worse, it's been damaged at some point, bent inwards. A few stern words coming VW Heritages way come tomorrow

Not sure what to do about this. I'm reluctant to send it back as it's taken so long to get one. They'll probably say that it's to be expected as it's a pattern part (I oredered a genuine one but they fucked that up, so settled for pattern instead), but I wouldn't agree with that at all. So my other option is to take it to a body shop, get a quote to fix it and charge Heritage. I don't want to do it myself in case I make it worse and they refuse to do anything with it then. Grrrr!

Bolocks to it, bought a genuine panel instead from a different supplier. Can't see me getting anything any time soon from heritage and I can't afford to be without the front panel for too long

tbh, could fixed the original by the look of it...

The original blue one, or repro? the original was all stretched under the towing eye. Really would have needed cutting out, shaping and rewelding. The repro panel is repairable, but there's no way I could get it perfect (which is what it needs to be or why bother replacing it) so that means paying someone to do it. By the time I've payed labour on that, I may as well buy a new one. It's as much the time as anything though. They've not exactly been quick sending this one, so waiting for another would have been out of the question. I've found one on eBay, so should be dispatched tomorrow and then with me early next week. That beats heritages 'up to 8 weeks' any day!

If plans go, well, to plan, I may have need for another front panel to chop about, so this one may do for that as I'll want one to put it back to standard too

I'll wait to see what heritage say, I'd rather get my money back if nothing else as I'd lose out on postage if it needed sending. It's cost me in the region of £45 inc delivery and that's not a fair price to sell to you at, plus additional postage.

Although he doesn't offer delivery, I contacted him a while ago (whilst heritage dragged their feet) and he said he'd package for a courier if I sorted it.

No chance! Be lucky to be done for Early Edition/Springfest at this rate! Though I have Easter holidays between now and then. Probably start spraying panels in the next week or two. I was going to do the rear quaters etc and then panels, but I'm going to do it the other way now whilst I wait for the garage to be cleared in the next few weeks.

It's quite a drive yeah, but the wheels were only £20 in polo friendly sizes (14 x 6) as these are normally only seen in 13s or 15s and narrow widths. They are the wrong PCD but that's easily sorted. Keeping schtum about what they are though. Although they are not what you'd call a ground breaking wheel, they are rare (one set?) on a polo. I'm just praying the offset is ok

Nope, totally different shapes. There is no panel behind the 2f bumper is there? Or at least it's not so big.

I've been umming and arring about doing something different with the front of mine, and wondered if that panel would mate up ok, would obviously need some sort of bracketry to hold it!

Well Heritage said they will replace the panel for no charge, but it won't be for another 3-4 weeks. So I'm glad i ordered the genuine panel now. I'll make use of this one at a later date
