Well 3 days of sanding have yielded 3 prepped panels I'll be here all year at this rate. They weren't full days mind, as today I had to do the brakes on a friend's golf whilst he spelt off a hangover but I guess when doing inside and out, and with the paint in such a poor state, it's going to be inevitable. Just the boot lid, two wings an a valance to do, then I'll start laying some paint down yo!

All removable panels are now ready for primer. I've re-seam sealed areas, put stone chip where it would originally have been and generally tried to make them like new. I'm using a 'new' paint system called unibinder. Basically it converts 2K isocyanate paint (toxic) into 1K paint apparently giving all the benefits of 2k without tha hazards. I tried it on a panel yesterday and was less than impressed, it came out more like anti-stone chip paint However, upon futher research I found it needs to be thinned more than normal 2k. So i re-did the panel today and got much better results. Goes on so nice and thick compared to celly, saving lots of waiting about and respraying.

Tomorrow I hope to have all panels, inside and out fully primed, ready to lay top coat on friday. Then I can start on the main part of the car

Unibinder is a hardener yes, iso free. Though its a little thick, it needs thinning down a bit. All bolt on panels are in primer atm, god 2K primer is awesome! Builds so much. I've had an issue with contamination from an earlier repair hpwever. A synthetic paint was used and the thinners in the new paint have reacted, causing it to crack. I have some bar coat to go on, then these panels can have more primer. I've also sprayed a panel with colour coat, but it's bubbled, tiny little ones. Almost like microblisters. I think I've traced it to solvent pop, trying to lay too much paint on at high pressure. Sound about right? Any other ideas?

Aa I see so your doing in a solid 2k ( I can't get all technical, I'm just use to what I use) but like the type when you polish and your rag turns red.

yeah solvent pop isn't cool, it happens when too much paint is applied like you said, and the top layer 'skins' over before the rest has time to cure, then the solvent escapes though the skin and pops a lil hole!

How hot you getting it in there? Should be just warm while you paint.

yeah, standard 2k. Getting it to around room temperature

How long after you spray does it get the bubbles? Solvent pop doesn't happen strait away? A weird one

Hard to pass judgment without seeing it. I'd just flat it away and start again, making sure nothing is contaminated.

They're coming up instantly. I think I'm going on too thick too, maybe this could be the issue

Aye, the place is like a swimming pool! It's amazing how little dust contamination I've had. None, but did get a dog hair in it

I don't even have a dog! I was looking after my parents mutt for the day, and typically a fucking hair migrated to my freh paint :-/

Tell me about it! Had a nightmare with dodgy paint being used in an earlier repair. All sorted now, but put be back about a week finding, diagnosing and solving the problem. the issue with paint is you have to let it dry before moving on so i was spraying, it was fuccking up, rubbing back, spraying, more fuck ups, runbing back, phoning professionals, ordering paint barrier paint, etc. Update in a few weeks when it's done, thought I'd give it a big round up.

Fair play for doing it all yourself bodywork wise and persevering too

Yeah cheers. Once the sand paper touched that paintwork first time there was no going back! Just off to put a coat of primer on now, some late nights this week

Updates ?

Well I painted it last weekend. And then spent all week rubbing it all back off! I ha awful solvent pop issues, bubbles all over it. I think I have it sorted, at least I managed to avoid it on a test panel. Seems I was thinning it too much. I'm going over in a bit to do some final prep in Preperation to attempting the colour coat again. Never fucking ending!

So twice painted now? bummer man! Surly you only thin it out to what you like to spray it at? Thinner % i find very personal to the painter, i mean i thin it out till i like the look of it while I'm stirring! If It was thinned to much, you'd be struggling with runs ? How the finish? Need some good piccys.

Well things got worse yesterday. I was priming the parts I had rubbed down only to find the paint 'cracking'. I had this in small areas due to rubbing through to an earlier repair and getting down to some synthetic paint. However, I have no idea what's caused it this time. So i need to rub all the primer off again! Losing patience with this now but there's no going back so my only other option is to pay someone to do it, which is a no-no with a mortgage to pay

I stick to what I said before, you gotta change your hardener this time around dude!

I think you're right The top coat goes on nicely now, but I can't risk this if I ever need to make a repair. Any ideas what would cause this cracking?

While its good to have an intended show date deadline, get the car the way you want it and enjoy the journey.

I have to say, fair bit of respect in your determination to paint it right.

I cant offer and painting advice as I'm a complete novice, but feel your pain all the same.

My car is only - acceptable, but i wanted it on the road and will make the best of it until i have another chance to paint it another time. Sucks though as i imagined it perfect.

Maybe you can get yours to poloshow?
