Anyway, I wanted some tarty door lock mechanisms to make the inside of the doors look better. I don't like the brass standard ones, and these chrome ones go better with the colour theme I'm sticking too.

So, take two mechanisms (from a golf or Audi, I can't remember which) like this

Adjust the release arms like this. The bolt is required because the polo release mechanism is 'higher'. This took a bit of head scratching and trial and error to work out.

Put a very slight kink just before the hook attaching to the interior handle like so

And there you have a shiny locking mechanism (I need to replace the bolt holding the exterior handle you can see there with a stainless cap nut, as that dirty one won't do)

Just saw this, haven't been on here for time.

So an update I suppose.

I got the car painted and back together but I really wasn't happy with the result. Because of the issues I had with paint bubbling, cracking and practically falling off I was too timid with putting the top coat on resulting in a thin, orange peel finish. Not enough paint on to wet/dry it smooth but too shite to be seen in public. So I drove it to my sisters last September which is where it has stayed since. I can't even bring myself to look at it when I go round as it breaks my heart to think of all the work over the past 5 years and it still looks dreadful.

About the same time I bought a house too, which was in a comparable state to this car when i first picked it up, solid on the outside but needed updating. So the majority of my time has been spent working on the house. However there are plans to build a bespoke garage on the grounds of the house and move the Polo over in the spring, summer. Work has already started on this.

Coming back to the site recently (and watching plenty of wheeler dealers!) has given me my Polo-Mojo back. However, as I'm no longer teaching any more I don't have as much time as I used to and that time needs to be divided between the house and eventually the car. I have every intention of finishing what I started but what I have learned, and ultimately that has always been the goal with this car, to learn, is that some things are better left to the professionals!

Eventual plans include a professional respray and having the interior reupholstered along with a few other things. I won't say when things will get done but as soon as I have somewhere to work on the car, I'll certainly be starting.

A while since I updated this, and some of the reason's for this should become clearer if you read this post. The car has sat, unmoved for the best part of 2 years now. The longest I have owned her without working on it. Still, a house became a priority when I moved in and since there was no drive way, there was nowhere to really store the car (I'm not leaving it on a street). However, in the last couple of days, this is beginning to be remedied. Read on...

One of the main reasons I bought the hose was because of the rear access (the actress said to the Bishop) and thus the option of putting up a garage where the car could be stored. Over the past year I have made preparations in order to do this. I have a very long yet thin garden and the idea is to make a garage that spans the whole width of the garden and be about 20 feet 'long' ( actual dimensions are about 4.2m width and 5.4m length) right on the rear boundary. There will then be a driveway on the inside of the garden with two sets of double doors on opposite walls allowing for a drive through garage. Next door have a similar set up and it allows for the maintenance of the full length of the garden (a selling point) and the drive will also double as a patio again, important for resale. The garage will be almost entirely made of reclaimed timber with a corrugated steel roof. the floor will be suspended wooden floor spanning 3 equally spaced concrete plinths. And I'm doing all this myself.

Day 1

Laid here is a DPM with organic membrane below (to prevent weeds coming up). The 3 concrete plinths run along the two brick walls and one in between. These are 6 inches thick and 18 inches wide. They were actually laid last year by myself.

The garage is going to be organised in 2 halves - one for the car and the other as a workshop. I constructed the base in two 'halves'. I attacked the car side first. Frame is 2 x 4 wood all around.

This was as far as I got in one day (about 6 hours, which included levelling the frame). With the 18mm ply layed on top, it's actually surprisingly solid. However, there was too much flex (I have a plan for the interior) for my liking and I'm not sure it would take the weight of a heavier car. An empty mk2 might just about last.

Day 2

There was originally an old shed in the same position as this one when I moved in and this came down last year. I had kept the wood as it was pretty sturdily made and there was a lot of 4x4 and 3x3 posts. These were used to strengthen the floor like so.

Until the whole side was done

This took as long as the whole of the previous days work but never-the-less, the floor is now practically solid. I just need to add some support under the middle of the joists. With the ply back on, its very stiff.

Another 2 hours later and the other side was practically done. Since this will only take foot traffic and used for storage, I'm not sure whether to add the noggins in. Seems silly not too. Instead of ply though I'm using some lovely reclaimed larkin floor boards.

That's it for now. More updates as they are done. I've priced this up and its looking at coming in around the 3k mark, and that's with everything including getting leccy from the house (60 feet-ish away), roofing and all. Not bad considering my friend down the road just forked out 5k for a concrete base alone! All the wood is reclaimed and comes from a social enterprise in Oxford so not only is it cheap, but the money is helping to get people back into work as well. Teamed with the small amount of concrete too, this is a bit of a Grand Designs eco build!

It's considered permitted development because of the size but I will have to fire proof it (12mm plasterboard inside) due to the proximity to the boundary.

Haha! Both although I've been with the car a lot longer than the girl. Thing is she doesn't understand in it's current state it's not worth a lot. And nowhere neat what I've spent on it

A little update on the garage build. Things are coming on a little slow and now we're heading into Autumn, I'm going to be battling the weather. But August and September were busy months and since the company I'm using to source the wood uses reclaimed wood, it takes time for them to get the materials some times. However, just before I went away I got a big delivery to make up the walls of the structure, which I cracked on with. Pictures below show an un-braced wall. There will be noggins etc. to strengthen as well as 18mm ply on both sides or shiplap cladding and ply dependent on the visibility. I must admit, it's bigger than I thought is was going to be!

I have also constructed the rather more complicated 'front' wall that has the doorways in it but no photos I'm afraid.

Also just got back from Germany and picked this naughty number up whilst over there. NOS and was still in the plastic bag! Can you guess what it is yet?

I have a couple of sheds in the garden that I'll put parts and stuff in to try and keep it as clear as possible. But I can see it getting full in no time!

Some excellent weather today allowed me to crack on today.

The wood has gotten wet over the last few weeks but I need to treat it before the side wall goes up. Due to the proximity of the wall, I'll not have access when it's up so it is done before hauling the wall up into place. There fore the first job was to cover the work area to keep the worst of the weather out. I managed to finish the other side wall (which now needs creosoting) and I made some doors. Just 2 more to go :-/
