Good weather (still) over the last few weeks means I've gotten the boards on the roof now. This will in time be covered in corrugated steel but for now it's reasonably water proof until I can get hol

How do you work then max? On the drive? I have been for a while, but since I moved out I'v had nowhere to store my gear except at my sisters, whch is far from ideal. This should be perfect. The old boy doesnt have a car, but he has this massive garage which is like a double, but length ways. He also has a massive drive way with roof. So its a massive area to work in. Hopefully he'll let me store a car there eventually and I can start huntin for a MK1 golf 5 door or a mk1 scirocco :-D

Well i did my conversions under my rooved car port (small, cramped and outside so very cold at time)

I have now upgraded to my nans garage 8-) , still pretty small but i'll have a workbench and it will be out of the cold winter weather, when summer comes back i can role it back outside as its got a drive. I might make a makeshift roof however!

I've done all of my work up until now outside. Remember fitting my first lowering kit in the snow!

Anyhow, update from today. Not the massive one i was hopning for since maplin are a bunch of muppets! Dont ask.

So first off, the post man dropped this off from Max. Since I'll be using a GT cam, and they are around 4 1/2 teeth diferent in timing, a vernier cam is essential to get the best from the engine. Plus the price was good too. Must say, the workmanship and quality seems A class, to tops reps to you Max.

Moved on to laying the meters of cable I'm going to need for the ICE i showed last week. Gave the floorplan a good hoover to remove any swarf as i didnt want this rusintg and potentially staining the carpet, hence it looks so clean!

Then I put the interior back in (including some new sun visors as mine wouldnt stay up flat against the roof!). I haven't fully fitted the carpet yet as I still need to lay a bit of cable. Looks so much smarter now that I did all the work on it last week! Note the cheeky Astrali wheel

Last job was to fiddle around with the clocks. I ideally wanted to keep my original mileage but I wanted a rev counter too. So I combined a set of each. Using my odometer and fitting it into the rev counter clocks, I now have my origininal mileag and a rev counter

I assume this hole is for the illumination of the clock. It wasnt on the revcounterless clocks

So the interior is well on the way to being finished. Need sort out an isolation switch for the power to the amps, as well as finishing off the door cards and decking out the back. Getting the vernier also spurs me on to take another look at the engine

More to come tomorrow

Awesome build thread, really enjoyed reading through this :-D Keep the updates coming mate

Thanks mate, nice to get some positive feedback

So were the rev counter dials plug and play for you? It's a nice addition. You might have noticed in my build thread that the rev counter and digital clock would have cost an extra £263 in 1990, £416 in todays money, for a rev counter!

  • Author

No I hadnt

rev counter is great to have, and very handy when adjusting idle ect. nice job! seats are looking alot nicer too

Not much of an update for today as i was clearing out and moving into my new garage. So no pictures of the car, but a few of my new work area

And outside is a massive car port covering half the drive!

:-D Rolling Road day in january... i do hope so!

Yee boi! May have to insure the mk2 before feb just for that! aswell as if it snows lol

Thing I she won't be properly run in, and I'm reluctant to give her full beans without doing that first

one run cant hurt ;)

Might shat herself!

Anyhow, have a new friction plate on the way. That means prep and repaint engine (4th time  ) and then she can go back together. Frop her in, wire and plumb her up and she's read to start rubbling.

Still a few issues with the brakes though regarding reservoir and extending the rear hardlines a little. Nothing major but a sticking point

Simon

This has to come to the RR day!!!!!

Really looking forward to seeing this built!

Not really a mega update, but got a few things in the post over the last few days. Dont have pictures, but got a used but low mileage clutch, so thats the engine back together soon. Going to prep for paint I think this weekend if i can squeeze my way to the engine! Also got some window winders from VW heritage. Pics up sunday

Got one of these too. Have been on the look out and people probs think its only a small thing but its the details that count! Oh, its a boot lock seal and genuine vag from fleabay

a541f623.jpg

And got this for the 9n for £10! Looks brand new. Should tart her up a little!

Getting some engraving done tomorrow too, but I'll leave that for another day. Do a few more bits and pieces on sunday and update then hopefully after no work last weekend

Was reading pvw earlier and was bored so I've done some 'Dub Details' for the current build

Engine 1.6 AEA fully rebuilt with all new seals, gaskets and bearings. New rings, valves and valve guides. Painted in chrysler blue with polished rocker cover. Custom fabricated stainless steel inlet manifold for cbr600 carbs, 4-2-1 stainless steel exhaust manifold mated to 2" Ashley exhaust system. MK2F GT camshaft with custom vernier pulley. Old school top fill radiator with slimline fan. Custom stainless radiator shroud, hand polished stainless bolts throughout. 1.6 AEE gear box with modified output flanges to fit MK2 drive shafts. New sachs/LUK clutch, wire tuck for engine and lighting loom with fuel lines relocated to run inside O/S wing. Washer bottle, coil and facet fuel pump relocated under scuttle tray. Semi-smoothed engine bay resprayed in original Monaco Blue

Chassis PPS stage 3 subframe, new TCAs with polybushes throughout. New steering arms and ball joints. New standard shocks with -40mm lowering springs. 1 coil removed on front srpings. New top mounts (may become poly) and bump stops. Custom fabricated brake adaptors for fronts, and rear hand brake adaptors. Fronts (256mm) and rear (discs) from MK2 Golf 16v GTi fully stripped, rebuilt with new pistons and seals, painted in chrysler blue. New copper hardlines and goodrige stainless flexis throghout. Polo G40 rear beam with brake bias compensator. 15mm rear axle spacers with 20mm hubcentric spacers front and back (total rear track increase of 70mm). Polished 6 x 14" VW Le Castalettes (soon to be) with 155/165 55 14 Nankang front and rear respectively. All chassis parts painted in smooth hammerite black and under side of car painted in waxoyl

Outside Full respray in Monaco Blue (In the new year). Chrome locks and striker pins, new seals (hopefully) throughout, custom engraved door inserts, brand new door handles, pulled arches (with respray)

Inside Original limited edition blue/white checked interior, retrimmed door cards (on the way), chrome and black window winders with chrome door pulls. Modified clocks to maintain original mileage but add rev-counter. Dash from later model (to get rid of tacky sounding plastic and to match the grain of retimmed door cards). Vibe QB69s mounted in rear bulkhead, SE65s mounted in door cards, 12" Vibe Pulse 3 mounted in sustom enclosure (soon to be), 3 Vibe VP2 amps for 6x9s and SE65s with VP4 to power sub, custom panelling in boot

There we go, thats the total of my work so far (with a few bits for the future thrown in). There have obviously been problems along the way that have added to the work done, and ideas have been tried, tested and resigned to the bin, which all adds to the work. Doesnt look like much written here, but bearing in mind EVERYTHING has been painted AT LEAST once, and the prep work that goes into rubbing these rusty parts down, its quite a bit more work. Probably the most time consuming part has been sourcing parts at a reasonable price!

Small update from today. I eventually hauled the engine and gearbox out again today. It's been stored under towels, sheets and assorted junk since the clutch was torn off. I've been unable to look at it really since then. However, the damage is no where near as bad as i thought. Should be ok to go over with an airbrush as opposed to the big spray gun

Worst of the damage to the block is on the fly wheel end. The metal gasket thing took the brunt of the damage and will need a respray

Small amount on

Very small amount on the edge of the gearbox too

Fitted my vernier pulley too. Not timed up yet

Spent a bit of time trying to sort out the rear brakes. Have had to make a short hardline as the rear pair of stainless hoses aren't long enough. Another problem arose. All of the rear brake conversion threads seem to deal with a later mk2 style 2-piece handbrake. As I have an older style single rear cable connected to the single front cable, little of the information is relevant regarding the cables. Right headache as it doesnt seem to be able to have enough movement to fully engage the handbrake. Will need to mess about with the adjustment next week.

Have a concern with my 'GT' cam shaft. I'm dubious whether it is one. Decided to check and compare the markings, but couldn't find a match in the sticky in teh engine forum. Any ideas?

So due to the reduced amount of damage to the engine, I'm hopeful it can be in next week. Probably not running, but we're getting close!

  • Author

Bought an airbrush yesterday to touch up the damage on the engine. So with any luck, this will be in next weekend. Although I make no promises :?

Glad its going well!
