So a weekend of ups and downs, luckily ending on a high! Idea this weekend was to get the engine in. I tried to do this back in the summer but as i was lowering the engine it, due to the deep 1.6 sump, it fouled the subframe and wouldn't fit. So I hauled it back out, and thats where all the fun with the clutch began. Back then i swapped the oil pump and shallower sump/pump from the old 1.3 onto the 1.6 thinking nothing of it. I checked to see if it all turned over at this point, but it wouldn't. Originally we (neighbours had taken an interest!) thought that the gear box was fouling on the fly (dont know how that would happen, but it was the best idea we had). Another neighbour thought it was the timing (which i was convinced it wasnt) and the valves were touching the pistons. Anyhow this is where all the fun of removing the gearbox/clutch began. Once this was off i didnt touch the engine, until this week.

So, i decided this weekend was going to be dedicated to the engine. First off i checked to see if the timing was out, as suggested. So i removed the timing belt and turned the crank a half turn. Checked to see if there was any damage to the valves, but they all moved fine. However, the crank was still not turning over fully. So reluctantly I decided I had to have the head off, despite being torqued up etc.

Tried to turn the crank over again, this time with the head off, eliminating timing as a factor. Still wouldnt turn over. Although I couldnt see any contact, I decided to remove the fly wheel too. Then the sump and the end plates until I had the engine in pieces again.

Still couldnt find any contact and the crank wouldnt turn over. So i removed the oil pump (remember from the 1.3) and the bloody thing was fine and would turn over. Upon closer inspection, I could see where it was fouling the crank as it rotated.

Here you can see where the crank has fouled the pump. Two little bits on the pump where they have been scratched as the crank rotates

So out came the grinder and i removed the about 2-3mm of material from the housing. Hurrah, the crank would rotate

So by the end of yesterday (where i hoped the engine would be in) i had an engine that looked like this

So this morning i got to work putting the engine back together. All went well except for having to search through loads of stuff to find everything (not to self: be more mindful when putting things down!). After a few hours i had this

And a few hours later I had this! Exhaust manifold looked a bit touch and go whether I'd have to have the subb frame off. But i managed to wrestle it into the right place!

Also got some inserts engraved the other day to go into my brand new handles

Yeah. The coil and washer bottle have been relocated to the scuttle tray. So what you see (bar a few wires to the engine) now is basically all there will be. Head light looms have been tucked too to keep it minimal. Looks better than I could have hoped

Fuck, been mugged off After some investigation, I didnt think it was, thanks for confirming. I bloody sold another gt cam that i had, thinking I'd not need it. If only i could remember who it was from. Any idea what cam this is? Its not on that sticky list in the engine sub forum

Looking at this image, it's not a Mk.2 cam as there's no lobe for a mechanical fuel pump.

I hope it's not from an NZ engine as they're pretty lame from what I remember, but would be an easy mistake for the uneducated to make in thinking it was from a GT engine as they were also multi point injection.

And it's not the original 1.6 cam as the lobes are too wide on that one.

Regarding that camshaft, measure the lobes and see what kind of duration and lift its producing.

looks AWESOME in the engine bay, well done... then i saw the castalettes spacered within an inch of their life.... not too keen on that.

Whats up with the spaced wheels? I have narrower tyres to go on so maybe that wold help? I think they look mean with 185s lon though!

Max, where do you measure from to calculate lift and duration? And the pulley does look really good. Was a little apprehensive at first, but it fits the character so well. So good work on that one!

I see what your saying, and the project is ever evolving. I may yet swap out the tyres for wider ones. I just dont like the balloon look of 195s. The rears are spaced out 35mm and the fronts 20mm.

When i say narrow, I mean 165 and 155. I'll see what it looks like when they're on. I'm thinking i may need wider tyres to put the torque down!

Indeed it is! Shame current funds don't allow. I'm collecting parts for the turbo conversion ATM. I may run it in on the standard can as I don't want to rev the life out of it as it's been totally rebuilt. May get an after Market one then, or if one comes up cheapish before that. Tbh for the money, I'm not sure they're worth it. I may still have that gt cam kicking about somewhere

Why do you say that? It has a hole for the dizzy in the cam, so I doubt it. Also it has a woodruff key which the 1w doesn't have. Hmmmm.
