What's the difference to the aea cam?

Minor update from yesterday. Spent the majority of it faffing about trying to work out the wiring. I had marked up all the terminals and things, but I didnt consider the fact that some of these wouldn't be visible with the engine installed. Doh!

Anyhow, I think i have most of it sorted. Alas, some questions below

Fuel piping done. Although it needs a bit of a rethink as I'm not sure the battery will fit in!

Now the problems start! What are these two wires? I have taped them up, which makes me think it was for the carb (this car had no hedgehog originally as it was an early, exhaust heated affair). Any ideas about the wires?

Any ideas on these two? I think the red/black one goes to the starter. But what about the thin black one? It must attach very close to the red one as they are wrapped together.

Also I seem to have lost my oil pressure sender wires. What colour should these be?

Other than this i did a minor bumper repair and buggered about putting the grommets etc back in. Not much done tbh. Engine bay looks messy now :sad:

The thick red and black goes to the starter and the black wrapped up with it goes to the starter aswell. There should be two terminals on the starter, they can only go one way cos of the little peg on the black terminal.

Oil pressure wires, one blue and black iirc and one is yellow, can't remember which way round, swap them till it stops buzzing at you.

Or at least thats how it is on my mk1 golf

Thanks goose. Problem is the starter is for a 6n and the wiring is the original old loom. That mean the plugs/pegs/terminals arent the same fitting. Theres a plug on the starter, and looking at an earlier thread, that's for the red wire. I'll have another hunt for a second terminal.

Any ideas on the other wires in the other pic, the ones I've taped up?

Those wires that are taped up are the ignition live feed for the original carb (black wire with brown tracer)

The other wire that originally went to the starter was a ballast feed wire. The ignition coil's on these cars run at approx 9 volts normally but this wire bypasses the resistor in the loom to give the coil a shot of 12 volts whilst the starter is cranking. You may need to check the coil feed voltage when you've got all the wiring back together and if it's not 12 volts with the ignition switched on, you may need a new feed for the coil that gives the full voltage.

I've since found out those taped ones were for the carbs, so thanks for confirming that.

So where do I plug the black wire? I have replaced the coil on the car with a later type coil. Is this going to over cone the above problem you say may occur?

You should have a purple with white stripe and a solid black wire going to the coil. They may even connect on the same spade connector.

The black wire is the one that sees 12v but only when the engine is cranking as above.

The purple with white is the resisted wire that gives around 9v although when I tested mine it was still giving around 11-12v to the coil.

What I did was throw the purple wire away and move the black wire to the terminal of the fusebox the purple wire went through, which takes out the voltage drop that the purple wire causes.

I only did this when I converted to injection (because I wasn't aware of the issue at the time) I never had any bother with electronic ignition with the wire still in place but I would recommend doing away with it.

Yeah, I have those wires going to the coil, so thanks for that. I'l just sack the purple one off then. Will help tidy that area up.

If i do that, will I then be able to lose that black wire pictured above (with the red & black one) or does that still need to be connected to the starter somewhere? I cant see where it can go as there's no spare plug/terminal on the starter i can see

red and black deffo goes to the starter mate, should be a male spade or a plug on the starter for it.. as for the purple and white wire I'm still unsure of what to do with it... at the moment it is just coiled up into my scuttle tray.. haven't run the car yet so not sure if its needed :/

i think the wires you were on about earlier are from the original carb. i had two random ones the same, ones from the hedgehog thing. got bored and connected them together and my ignition came on! WTF! would be so easy to steal if you get the bonnet open! haahhah

The separate taped ones are for the carb (no heater in this model). It's the plain black one pictured with the red/black wire I'm concerned about

I'll measure it on sunday if you can wait. Bloody wedding tomorrow. Not happy about spending the first day of my holidays at that! And yes, its an ABD. Which measurement do you want, top of pistons to the top of the block?

Been a little ill the last few days so haven't got much done. Dragged myself over to Roxy today to see what the posty had bought me and to see what I could do to her.

First off, santa bought an early presetnt. Dont like the look of the orange lenses, and what them to blend into the bumpers a bit. They came with orange bulbs, but i swapped these out for a set of chrome ones I had knocking about. They look sweet, will get pics tomorrow

Then I started work on the bumpers themselves. Although in better condition than the originals, these ones I picked up had minor damage where they had been scuffed and/or bumped. The front bumper also had a little bit of the chrome trim missing, so I've filled it with a bit of normal black trim and

smoothed it with filler.

These have since been smoothed. Going to paint them tomorrow. Got some chrome paint earlier too (although its not too great). The plan is to paint the original chrome trim again after painting the bumper in textured paint. I have also started to repaint the badges to smarten them up too.

Went and got the last few parts for the engine after this, including rotar, dizzy cap and the king lead (people, you were right. Replacements seem to have overly long king leads!). Have tidied the wires up in the bay and I plan to start her up tomorrow providing there's nothing I've forgotten

HT leads didnt seem to fit the coil, so i need to swap these tomorrow. Grrr! Anyhow, continued working on the bumpers and body work today

Prepared and sprayed the bumpers with plastic primer. I have quite a few!

Then fixed the passenger side window. I thought it had just come of the winder bar, but it seems its jamming at the top of the window, in the seal. The seat/bar is quite badly rusted, but I'm going to squeeze it tomorrow, and hope this solves the problem. Cleaned, cut, polished and waxed the door too.

Whilst I was faffing with the window, I whipped all the seals off too, giving them a going over with some Autoglym trim wax stuff. Braought them up like new! Did the mirror and mounting plate too, again, too dark for pictures.

So nothing mega, but progress nonetheless. Got some more door cards on the way, so these should hopefully get trimmed soon. Have some nice furniture, door pins etc to go on too, so should look plush. Now I'm off for the xmas holidays, I aim to get one of;

finished before I go back. Brakes are just a few little things, but I need to get some unions made up (found a little engineering works in my village today! Been there years and I never knew!), just need to sketch them out. Need to sort handbrake too. Engine needs the electrics and fuel plumbing finalising, then that can run. Interior just needs cables laying and carpet being put back down etc. So none are masive jobs, but they will no doubt take a while!

Bit more work on the cosmetic side of things today. Got my lovely chrome Audi locks in. Took a bit of fettling to get the lever on the door handle to push on the catch on the lock, but we got there.

Then i dressed up the inside of the doors. Although I'm retrimming some other door cards, I put these ones together anyway. Got some nice shiny door handles and new winders

I have a couple of remote volume controls for my amps. Have been thinking of a way to make them look OEM and mount them in the dash. So i had a little play today. Quite a challeng as I didnt really want any unnecessary screws on show, so I used some screws that were already present on the control unit. Think it looks OK

And some door pins I have. Unfortunatley they keep coming off in my hand

Sprayed the bumpers with textured paint too. Going to repaint the chrome trim tomrorrow hopefully, so pics to follow

The chrome door locks are a nice touch. How did the textured paint come out?

I'm all about the nice touches, got tonbe a complete car.

Textured paint wash great, but I used the finer setting. Need to redo areas so will do the caurse setting next time

On another note, found by gt cam! Accidently mixed it up with a g40 cam I had. Nearly sent it off to someone. Lucky!
