Oh right, and mega squirt is the injection? Why not just use the dizzy instead of mega jolt?

I dont think megasquirt is injection, its just another make of mappable ignition

I could be wrong though.

Where as if you go with a MK2 ignition setup, you cant.

Ok, i looked it up, megasquirt is 'an aftermarket electronic fuel injection (EFI) controller designed to be used with a wide range of spark-ignition internal combustion engines (i.e., not diesel engines.) It is a complete standalone fuel injection controller with software and hardware'

So, this gives the option to be able to use an injection setup, just without a G40 ecu or whatever.

Cyrmo, is that a K10 micra? What are your plans for the fuel enrichment while on boost, just big main jets? It looks good anyway.

As for ignition, there is no need for anything fancey. I started off using points from a Mk2 polo. Basically you want a normal usable ignition curve, which then caps its self to between 10 and 20 degrees BTDC when you come on boost (to prevent detonation). So You can do this by messing with the springs that control the mechanical advance. Then to increase economy you want to add a vac advance unit (referanced to somewhere after your throttle), this gives it more timing when its not on boost, making it run more efficiently.

My car ended up using the standard SPi ecu to control the ignition, as with all the injection unplugged it resorted to an ignition map that was pretty much spot on for the turbo, then I added a vac advance to the dizzy for a bit more economy.

As for exhaust manifolds, I made mine. No need to bother with anything fancey, equal length tubes etc have more disadvantages than advantages IMHO. Just a log type manifold will be fine, try to avoid stainless steel as its prone to cracking and is a pig to work with. Use a good heavy gauge steel to minimise the risk of cracking, add a support for your manifold and supposrt your downpipe. You dont want the weight of your turbo and exhaust pulling your manifold down when its glowing red hot.

And cheers for posting that pic Bantan. I had forgotton about the K&N that I got for nowt that was big enough for about 500bhp hahaha. It filled the gap I suppose.

I recognise my gangly arm there too, wearing that north face jacket with the knackered zip thats all covered in gearbox oil stains from when I crashed my discovery, I was wearing that this evening! haha.

And yes, If there was one thing I was happy with about my car it was the sound, nice and quiet yet quite deep.

I might dig out some more photos tomorrow and post them up.

What did you do with the exhaust manifold in the end? :unibrow:

It was kicking about but I have no idea where its gone now. It was never very good anyway, I actually started making a better one but when it came off the rollers at 208/201 I couldnt be arsed!

I think I still have the inlet manifold and carb somewhere, and I know I have the fuel pressure regulator. And the intercooler. Thats it I think. Although I have the bonnet hung on the wall, for some strange reason I always liked the bonnet.

Them exhaust mani especially. Downpipe and the pipe from the intercooler to the carb too.

some one mentioned suck through carb set up's earlier, one thing that would worry me about that tho is that i have had turbo's glowing red before, would it be safe to have air and fuel mix being sucked through a glowing red turbo? :?

i read a little bit about these set up's using SU carbs and it's apparently a very easy set up to do as the carb is working in the way that it would on an N/A set up. any other thoughts on this kind of application?

They cant be all that bad, as they do give reasonable gains on a mini.

It'd be easier to get the bits separate, as if you bought a setup from a mini, ud end up with more stuff that you dont need than you do i reckon.

I didn't literally mean go and buy the lot lol,

But use the parts you need from a mini set-up, Its run on a similar displacement engine and they're pretty cheap, reliable and obviously give pretty good gains,

An example is my mates turbo 1275 making 130bhp, no other mods.

From the build threads I've been reading on there that'd be difficult.

They have to spend shit loads to get around the 140bhp mark.

thats like 80bhp up just from the turbo? standard 1275 has 54bhp new.

I didn't question it with the 3f making 75bhp standard and then if turbo'd would be making around 130bhp?

1293, T2 on mirage manifold, phase 2 cam, Benross head- 106hp (113lb/ft at 3500rpm) on 6psi.

I have a bit of experience with turbo mini's, as I helped my mate build one a few years back. What you have to bear in mind when you are reading what people have done and what power they make is A) lots of people talk lots of bullshit, and B) there are loads of spakkas that dont really know what they are doing.

Also, its worth bearing in mind that a mini engine is a total piece of scrap, its the worst thing of all time, honestly! The cranks only have 3 main bearings instead of 5, and they arent counerweighted. They use pushrods not OHC. They have (listen to this!) 3 exhaust ports and 2 inlets! Yes, the wrong way around! The gearbox is in the sump, yada yada etc etc. A polo engine may as well be out of an F1 car compared to a mini one. Only 2 inlet ports and they are each smaller than a standard polo one and a polo has 4 of them!

Doing the turbo mini was what made me want to build my polo, as I just couldnt believe that the thing worked, it was unreal. So I just wondered all the time how much better you could make it if you did something similar to a bullit proof engine with a half descent cylinder head.

Anyway, robs mini was standard head, metro turbo block, standard crank, rods, accralite pistons (which were a mistake) metro turbo cam, metro turbo carb, and a GT17 turbo off a non aero saab 9-3, with a cossie 2wd intercooler. We ran 18psi of boost, and at Mikeanics it was dyno'd at 134bhp and 175lbs/in. With a trick cylinder head it should have made much nearer 170-180bhp.

We blew it up though, through inexperience. It detonated quite hard and blew the ring lands off the accralites, after looking into it they were a weak piston anyway. So Rob bought some expensive ones. After blowing 2 gearboxes he then bought a set of straight cut gears and a 4 pin diff, then it stripped 4th gear again. And now its sat in his barn where it hasnt moved for a few years. No one else really seems to break the gearboxes, but then again I cant really see many other people giving their cars the absolute death like we did back then. Used to snap the head steady on it regular too.

Bear in mind that for a metty turbo carb to work you need the plenum thing too. Its supposed to have some aero in it that makes it all work.

My mates spent stupid stupid money on his N/A 1275... to only get around 80bhp out of it :lol:

I'm talking, stage 3 head, full stainless exhaust system, HIF44 carb, fast road cam, some sort of modded rocker thingys (i forgot what they are called), K&N, leccy ignition. And the 1275 alone he got ripped for :lol:

They are stupidly restricted.

But it doesn't stop me wanting a supercharged a-series in a van. Like, that is my dream haha.

To be fair to him, when i said "no other mods" I meant nothing special. Obviously he has used everything he needed to run boost, Turbo pistons , Sealed HIF44 etc.

He has some mild head-work and a relevant cam running 10psi i think.
