Supercharger?

Featured Replies

Been looking for a turbo on ebay, wanting something in good condition or even brand new,

Having read through chris's FAQ on the AAV turbo route, which says use the K03 off of a passat, transverse engine configuration. Now, is this only for mounting it in the conventional place (Exhaust manifold side) and if your using a log type manifold? The reason i ask is because i will more than likely have to mount the turbo on the backside of the engine, as the route from the compressor outlet to the inlet manifold needs to be minimal.

I understand this will give the problem of a long distance for the exhaust gas to travel before it gets to the turbo, but the engine will be tuned/set-up to give good performance off boost so turbo-lag should hopefully be minimal.

Is this the turbo to use? I'd obviously have to clock the turbine and compressor housings to everything is pointing in the correct direction for the set-up.

I thought that it wasn't just exhaust gases but also the heat that helped spool the turbo? If that is the case then mounting the turbo so far from the head could bring its own problems

Surely mounting the turbo as high up as you can at the front of the engine and having the boost pipe go over the head to a modified inlet that stays closer to the head and comes upwards so you can use a shorter boost pipe would be a much better idea? Suck through supercharged mini's use longer hoses than that would need iirc?

Yeah, a turbo harnesses the heat energy carried in the exhaust gasses to drive the turbine, i'd imagine it will still be "hot enough" after travelling said distance, i suppose i could mount the turbo over the gearbox, to the right of the engine, and have the manifold bend around to meet it, instead of the manifold going under the engine to a rear mounted turbo?

I suppose it would be best to situate it so that the distance between the exhaust manifold flange ---> turbo inlet is roughly equal to the turbo outlet ---> inlet flange?

I've been looking at the suck-through turbo beetle set-ups, on youtube etc and they seem to run very large distance for both!

Been looking into the blowthrough bike carb route, foudn this thread helpful regarding whats needed;

Seems he got pretty good results i from 6psi?

Supposedly the modifications needed to the bike carbs is a signal from a "pilot" tube to the float bowls, a boost referenced FPR and a sealed plenum!

This is a good read;

Passats are longitudinal engine, not transverse. The transverse K03s have weird compressor and turbine housings, so are more difficult to fit - and not a bolt-on to any of the off-the-shelf manifolds.

If you're going suck-though, then the pipe run from compressor outlet to inlet won't be that long anyway.

Sorry, got mixed up with the configurations, so its the longitudinal ones that fit the "log" type manifolds off the shelf etc?

Don't think i'm gonna be going suck-through now anyway :roll: , if its gonna be a track car, it needs an intercooler in my head, otherwise it will just suffer from prolonged heat soak and the likelihood of detonation increases hugely.

The plan is to convert a set of bikecarbs, and use either a G40 or K03 for now,

What would you advice be on that andy?

Few pics for you Max, may be of some help:

Nice, cheers dude.

A-series though :doubt:

Going g-lader through a set of ZXR400 carbs now 8-)

Principle is the same, side mounted and that. Thought it may of been some help anyway. Good luck with the charger and that then. :thumbsup:

Cheers. I see you've gone down the G40 route?

Why not use an R5T carb though max? I was a little confused as to why you were buggering about with suck through anyway. Different it may be, but for a smilar amount of work you'd be able to do a convetional set up and get much better results. for all the effort, it really seems silly to not have an intercooler, and thus cripple potential performance
