I've heard you can achieve this by shoving a spark plug in the exhaust after the backbox (obviously with a feed) and revving the nuts off it.. this have any truth to it?

Yeah it does but it doesn't explode out it just flluffs out and you end up melting your bumper

My mate's old Focus didn't. He had a 'flamer kit' that spat four foot flames out of the exhaust with some substantial banging.

(That video was recorded back in 2004 by the way, he's grown up since...)
