Coming together mate!

Trial and error sucks with all this, especially when youve already smoother the bay, making some bits up for my mounts this week to get it done then getting some custom shit fabb'd up ;)

I really need to update my thread, its dire =|

I know it's a nightmare when you just have no front end/bonnet on and you don't know how it should sit :( lol

You need updates!! ;) lol

  • Slight update.....it is now fully MOT'd, taxed and insured as of Saturday morning. I've been driving it the past 2 days with no problems apart from the boost hose that clamps on the turbo likes to pop

  • Picked it up yesterday, It's an animal - Pics and videos to follow over the weekend

  • Yeah I'll be there haha

I'm not trying to critise here...sorry if it comes across that way.

wouldnt it of made more sense to do all the metal work and fabricating BEFORE you started filling and smoothing the bay?

Haha tell me about it lol! The original plan was I had a company making the mounts for me but after 4-5weeks they still hadn't even started them and completely let me down so now I had to make them :( they were going to be bolt on so that's why the bay had been started :/

I'm not trying to critise here...sorry if it comes across that way.

x2 harry you should of have done all the trials fits before

I think he may have realised that now rob...

panda,

i dont think that the problem is that its not the right angle it think that it could be more to do with the notch that has been made?

Harry, why is it sat too far back? what is there not enough space for?

No the problem isn't the angle because that will be sorted with the dogbone mount once the engine is sat on its own. The problem is that the side of the block isn't close enough to the chassis leg so the gearbox side is too far over and the mounting is sat in the notch. So the drivers side mount needs to move over slightly so that gearbox isn't as much in the notch.

Also it's slightly too far back because the gearbox diff housing is massive and is resting on the subframe and also there is not much room for the downpipe :(

Lol yupp to be honest I'm going to blame MV Developments on this one because they fucked me around for weeks saying my engine mounts were being powder coated then suddenly when I chased them they told me they hadn't even started them :( only reason I done the bay first was because the mounts I was buying were meant to be bolt onto the chassis legs but now I've had to make my own I've had to destroy the bay :(

Oh well never done anything like this so a learning curve ;)

Dont worry about it mate, theres no rush. I think I've come to the point where mine wont be done for the RR day but I've been putting in some man hours recently. Ill update this weekend :)

Havnt had the best of luck getting this mounted so far but me and my mate had Friday off work and we made some good progress :)

We completely took off the original Drivers side mount we made and chopped out more of the chassis leg :)

Turn your gas up or change the tip or something weld doesent look quite right.... The weld should be just under flush for a perfect weld.

Also watch the thickness of the fibreglass, With welding the heat can cause the filler/fibreglass to lift so watch that also.

Nothing wrong with abit of muddy fun! Miss my quad for that.

Cheers, yeah I've got a feeling that the gas isn't quite right :( you can hardly hear it come out and it's on full with a brand new bottle :/

You think the welds will still be strong enough? the mounts I made which wernt quite right, I was smashing them with a hammer and the metal bent before the welds so I think probably ok.

Yeah it's good fun :)

  • Author
I presume the weld didnt crack even after it had bent the metal? Well i hope not  If it did turn the feed up abit more and SORT THE GAS! cant stress that enough. get it sorted on a scrap piece of steel the same thickness as what you are welding. Check the pipe isent kinked or replace the tip... have you swopped the tip atall? (the brass bit the wire goes through) make sure its the right one for your wire (presuming 0.6/0.8mm wire)

I have small bottles and have it about 4/5 out of the possible 8 for welding 2mm steel. thats probably 2/3mm so around there and you should hear it. I do have issues if i go from 0 to say 3 or less it doesent come out but if i turn it to 8 give it a quick squeeze and back down to 3 its fine ;)

Also DO NOT pour water on the steel to cool it, if its that hot it would weaken it. :D

EDIT: Just looking back at the pics and dont take this personally BUT it looks abit willy nilly and abit scruffy.

If it was me i'd get a knot wheel on that WHOLE side wash it all off and start again, clean slate. Personally i think that whole engine mount can be removed and i'd consider welding in a golf item from the scrappy (drill the spot welds). Obviously it would need alterations but its going to look abit more ''stock'' or making a new one in a similar design would be another option.

Besta' luck matey

No the weld was fine, I had to grind it off in the end. Yeah I will look at the welder before carrying on, I'm using 0.6mm wire and tips (The tip is brand new as well)

I think the gas was set at 7 out of the 11 which it goes up to but not much was coming out :/

Yeah I know what you mean about it looking messy but you arnt going to see any of that because thats what will be plated over etc. Also the whole side was grinded down back to bare metal before welded on. I'm pretty confident its spot on to be honest.

The drivers side of the bay is going to be totally re-done now, fibreglass etc taken off and start again and re-shape it all.

Cheers for help :)

That sump isn't going to last long. .

That sump isn't going to last long. .

Haha yupp and it's a shallow one! To be fair it's not that much lower than subframe.....

looks to be lots of room at the top, you could do as Ben said and get the golf mounts and weld them in.

It would make it a lot higher.

Me likes. Still not updated mine. Your gonna love my mounts ;)

Yeah I see what you mean but it's so hard to line up the engine on the crane and then make mounts from that. No doubt the mk4 parts would also need some work on them too.

Because the front end is off its very hard to know when it's sat right and the bonnet will close etc :/

I know, we need more pics!! Lol look forward to seeing them ;)

  • Author
Well close the bonnet line the engine up front to back then get a jack under it and then put a 1" block of wood on the rocker cover. when the bonet starts to lift JUST thats your limit as you'll have that 1" spare......

How olds your wire? does it live in damp conditions? rusty wire is a nice person....

Cheers :) I'm happy with how it sits to be honest and the sump isn't even that much lower than subframe so it will be fine!

If you mean welding wire, then it's brand new as well :)

what type of gas are you using? you have the level set too low to weld outdoors mate...also, the sound of the mig should be like frying bacon when you do weld, get your head in close with the visor on of course.

it shouldnt burn back if you have your wire speed set correctly...

you're doing a good job so far, not 100% on design of your mounts and i'm glad you took my advise and looked at my photos- i'll get you some more when i finish my gearbox bracket design.

I am having some stuff laser cut for precision...

its a shame MV let you down- they seem like a right bunch of clowns if i'm honest, i saw their work on my mates golf which they took over a year to do and Olly on here could have done it in one weekend with his eyes closed!

You have my number, and i've always said you're more than welcome to see Naz's car in my unit... :-)

The gas is C02 and the Welder is on its Max while I'm welding those :( .....Its probably because of the gas issue and It definately sounds like bacon :)

I need to invest in a Automatic mask because I have a standard one which you holdover your face so doesnt really help me much because my hand is moving etc!

Thanks :) look forward to seeing them, the ones you sent really helped. There is only a few decent threads on these which have helped give me an idea to be honest and one of them was in a lupo so a bit different lol.

Yeah you can probably imagine I was not happy when MV let me down, I waited 4-5weeks and then they said they hadnt even started! Anyway its been a good learning experience so far considering I have never welded before when I started this!

Cheers for your help and advise so far - its really appreciated!! Have to buy you a drink at some shows next year ;)

Harry

P.S. Nope havnt got your number :/ Might have to come and have a look one day :)

turbo oil feeds? How's that welding coming on?

Yupp :) the oil return is on its way....

Well i spent a good few hours last night messing about with the welder, took it apart etc and no kinks, gas definitely on and still nothing :(

It's a brand new bottle as well, the previous bottle came out a little bit and this new one is the same! any thoughts?

i use 80% Argon 20% CO2 combo for mine and its spot on...pure CO2 will mean the arc feels less stable and the weld will progress in a stuttering fashion with blobs of molten weld (spatter) being blown off at regular intervals.

The wind outdoors is blowing your shielding gas and i bet those welds wont stand the test of time mate- if i was to do break them, i could probably see them looking like the inside of an aero chocolate bar.

Try and get a gazebo setup or something and definately get yourself an auto darkening helmet- it will help you out massively- you can see your weld pool then and create tidier welds.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Auto-Darkening-W...=item6673ac0723

I looked at doing that gearbox mount like you have but i just think theres too much weight on it...the 16v version of that mount is shorter and stubbier.

nice oil feed lines- guessing you're gonna tap the shallow sump to allow for the oil return?

Sorted the gas problem :D the valve which goes on top of the gas bottle was knackered it just wasnt putting anything through. £20quid later with a new valve its all sorted :) and the difference in the welds is amazing!

I have a nice list of things to buy with my christmas bonus from work so going to invest in an automatic mask :)

Yeah i'm using the 16v one, thats thinner and longer wheras the 8v one is the shorter and stubbier one.

The oil feed lines and straight fit, but the Oil drain line to the sump comes with the flange so you can use the standard bolt holes......will get some pics when it arrives :)

Updates on the way .........
