  • Slight update.....it is now fully MOT'd, taxed and insured as of Saturday morning. I've been driving it the past 2 days with no problems apart from the boost hose that clamps on the turbo likes to pop

  • Picked it up yesterday, It's an animal - Pics and videos to follow over the weekend

  • Yeah I'll be there haha

Tyres for wheels, front braided brake hoses, slim line rad fan, vac pipes, rad pipes and some more silicon boost pipes....ohh and a private plate for it ;)

Ooo sounds good!

Tyres for wheels

Sweet idea Harry... aren't you copying me tho ?

Haha I am :( I shouldnt be running tyres cos thats copying :p

Harry- have you fitted the shifter tower yet? Also...have you had to space out the radiator to accomodate the slim fans or are you going to use a set of 'Pull' fans and set them in front of the rad?

I'm only asking because i've had to use an oil filter relocation kit to prevent the oil filter from fowling on the rad and hindering fitment of the twin slimline fans...it'll make it easier to service the engine every 6 months.

Yeah fitted the 02J shifter onto the 02a box already :) just need to connect the linkage but I think the clips on the linkage are broken :@ so might be sending the linkage back!

I've ordered a 12" Fan which will be going on the front of the Rad just because there isnt any room between the oil filter and the rad at all- I did read somewhere that you can get a smaller stuby Oil Filter from another 1.8t engine but I couldn't find the thread or parts anywhere so I scrapped that idea and just went with putting the fan in front of the rad.

Hopefully it will keep it cool enough!

What Radiator are you using?

Cheers

So did you cut out the centre tunnel brackets for the existing polo shifter tower and just bolt in the 02j shifter tower?

The stubby oil filter is just a polo GTI one mate, the threads are the same and makes no odds about the size really...personally, even with a stubby one i'd still think about a relocation kit because if the engine rocks under load it might damage the radiator cooling fins.

I've decided to space the VR6 Aircon version radiator away from the slam panel and keep with the factory setup and place the fans behind the rad- 2x 12" pacet fans.

Hows the wiring going mate?

Ahh you mean the actual shifter that goes in the car.....yeah I cut out all the polo brackets and then drilled 4 holes inside the car and used the bolt threads which are on shifter through the holes I drilled then put nuts on to hold it in place.

Hmm yeah that's a good point it does have a bit of space (like 1.5inches) so may have to look into that relocation kit!

Yeah I'm using a 1.8 BMW top fill radiator, which is what they use on the Mk1 golfs with these conversions and then have a 12" fan as well. Going to test it all first and make sure it's man enough before I start driving the car miles to a show but I don't see a problem.

Wiring isn't too bad, started stripping the un-wanted wires back from the old loom but progress on this is slow because I hate wiring and keep putting it off haha!

How's Naz car coming along?

Yeah the main shifter- does the centre tunnel plastic fit back on okay? I'm just contemplating fabricating and welding in some brackets to lower the tower down a bit so it sits like the polo shifter. Saw a VR6 shifter the other day and i think that would bolt straight in and have the correct shifter cables to control the box...but i dont have one spare to try.

the kit is only about £20-30 but for you it might be defeating the object of a smoothed bay when you're adding extra hosing.

I keep tackling the wiring- IN MY HEAD! :D

Naz's car is coming along nicely:

Brake lines have been re-done, subframe/wishbones are back from the powder coaters along with all his engine bits so i'll be fitting those back up to the car and installing his Brembo's up front.

Hydraulic clutch pedal box is in and clutch line is in...

mounts have been powdercoated and are also back and put together...

Next up the engine is being rebuilt so it's fully forged internally to handle the GT turbo we have...whilst that happens i'll also tackle the wiring and radiator spacing/fan fitment and figure out where to weld in the bracket for the oil filter relocation kit.

Still a lot of work to do... :crybaby:

I havnt yet put the metal head shield back on in the tunnel but the Audi shifter was a tight fit in the tunnel! I seem to have a problem with the shifter and linkage, for some reason I can't move the selector inside the car upwards to go into 1st, 3rd or 5th but it goes backwards into 2nd and 4th......

Haha suppose you got the wiring all sorted out 'In your head' then lol.....just got to get hacking at the old loom :)

Sounds good and like its getting there :) what turbo has he gone for a GT28?

Things left to do:

Bleed Clutch

Fit the Power Steering Return Line

Sort gear linkage (For some reason can only get 2nd and 4th - wont engage in 1st, 3rd or 5th :( )

Fit Brakes and Bleed (Need to borrow some 15" wheels from my mate to fit over them)

Bleed Cooling system

Fill engine with oil

Wire it all up :)

Slowly getting there....

Now that looks like progress! Nice work.

It's the same front mount as mine Harry this is looking ace dude glad there's so many 1.8Ts around and you can keep bouncing ideas off each other the works looking top quality!
