If people follow the guidelines, even if they get scammed, they get their money back! simples!

Ok, lets say this is set up (the activation letter), between 2/3 people who are responsible for new members, Lets say at the most it will take a week for your activation letter to come through the post. So...

1400 members , divided between 3 people is 466 per person per year.

Divide that by how many weeks , 466/52 = 9.

So that's 9 letters some has got to get ready a week , at the most and send off.

Not a lot of work if you ask me.

The hard bit for me would be how to get the activation code linked from an account to the letter etc, Maybe thats something you could do? being out admin guy

editomondo: a while back i brought some wheels of someone who asked me to pay via gift, although this person turned out to be genuine i said no and payed normally after doing alot of research.

basically this is what i found;

if you pay properly though paypal you are paying for a service, i.e sending you a car part, if they do not follow through with the service you have payed for then you WILL be refunded when they have gathered sufficient evidence that this person has not performed the service they have been payed for.

if you payed paypal there charges they will sort your money problems out, think how many dispuits are going to be filed to this pleb, they are not even going to consider that he is genuine after they have enough evidence off one or two and they will inform the police straight away, trust me paypal want there money as much as you want yours!

if you try to cut the paypal charges this is your own fault, they will not cover you if they are making no money by doing so...

when you pay via gift you are giving someone money, hence the 'gift' there is no way you can get this back as they are not being payed to do anything, this is a G I F T .

disclaimer this is what I've read i am not mr paypal so dont hurt me if its wrong

I did the same rich, but the only refund you get is the money YOU have sent, They are the middle man, and you pay them for it.

That's what all the waiting is for, to give you more time if something doesn't seem right, Its not for the money to travel from one place to another.

BUT there is a whole lot of admin work involved in printing, labelling and dispatching a letter to each member if you're getting in excess of 1500 new member annually.

Another point, pretty sure it was made somewhere in this thread..

1. If these scammers do make hundreds of pounds out of us, a small £5 charge isn't going to deter them.. if anything it will cause them to plot a more complex plan so they ensure they get their £5 back?

2. It's far too easy to get a letter sent to say you parent's, friend's, neighbour's address..

So in essence all that'd happen would be it'd take an extra 5-7 days for new Club Polo members to join up, not to mention the pain in the arse that is Royal Mail with delivering letters and such -.- just all seems a bit long winded. I mean I'm a new member and I've been close to buying a few things on here (funds have held me back :( ) but you just gotta take all the necessary precations.. such as images of the product, as much detail as you can and try and secure an address/contact number so you can at least get hold of the person you're buying from!

if he has withdrawn the money then paypal pay you your money he owes you and put him in the minus figures, they will then charge him extra when they catch him so they are not loosing out, paypal is the safest way to purchase online but at the end of the day you shop on the internet, you take a risk.

i honestlyt dont think youll stop people doing it, its just one of them things, i think whatever you do someone will be able to get around it, thes)e people are clever ( well most of them, not this spoon) and when they do get around it its just going to be easier for them to scam people. its a good idea though

Nothing is going to be 100% proof, but this will stop a fair amount of them.

that is an extreme possiblity as well why because all scammers work behind a shield of some kind to try and save themselves from detection also once paypal has refunded the money which to be fair in this case they are gonna have to to anyone who has used the correct method of payment as has been said he will then owe paypal a lot of spondules they have his bank details they are a big enough company and can proove he has broken the law they will involve the police and give his bank details the police will ask the bank where he regurlarly withdraws at which banks branches cashpoints by narrowing it down they will gradually close the net on him and then they will get him he is not infalable justa shame the police dont believe in an eye for an eye although they do name and shame people these days so it could well end up in someones local paper

St count won't stop scanners end of, you pay as a gift, you take the risk, if you paypal it properly worst thing is you'll have to wait a while to get your money back, people need to use there common sense or they shouldn't be sending money over the net. This is going to go on and on, the mods have done hat they can in warning people now they need to read the big red writing and if they fail to follow the tips then that's there fault

lets say he comes on the forum for a while, generally gets to know the place/people. He puts up an advert for a something expensive but priced well.

One of us comes along, bags it because its a pretty good price, the guy looks legit etc. You could pay properly and not as a gift , the scammer gets your money, withdraws it to his bank, closes paypal account or just leaves it.

Then what?

Then entering people's details into a database, keeping that database secure... are we even allowed to keep people's details on file? (data protection etc.)

Heres an idea, you could change the sale thread rules to include pictures of said items with date and time and phone number? I know you say be careful but whenever you buy anything online you are putting your trust in someone so its always a risk.

I don't want to be persistent here, but what stops you or me getting scammed? We know the rules fine. If something looks too good to be true it probably is, Pay properly not as a gift try and get contact details or pictures etc etc etc. This still won't stop it,

They could actually have the goods,they could look completely legit ,they could have been a member on the forum for a few months but when it comes to sending the stuff off , they just don't and withdraw the cash and tell you the goods are on the way.

Paypal can't do anything as he's withdrawn it and done one. Your left out of pocket.

no matey lol youll find alot of genuine people ask for it as a gift, i just reverse the paypal charge so i pay it instead of them.

their paypal account actually goes into negative balance and you get your money back, then it's up to paypal to chase the guy.

the details wont work theres always a way to get around things, you need to understand you cant stop them they are clever people mostly, you just need to be aware of them, there will always be a way to get around itm,

you could make the most secure for sale ideas in the world but theres always a way around it, you could just get keylogged, hacked, and scammed by someone you think is your friend, you wont win unless you stop for sale threads on here

Just don't buy anything from the Isle of Wight ask if you can collect first as well.
