take the battery off of the car and leave it for ten min's make a cuppa or something :-D then there is two allen key botls that hold the air bag center on . at the back of the steering wheels you should be able to feel them a 6 mill allen key fits off the top of my head . hope that helps.

There's no allen key bolts to remove the airbag.

You need to disconnect the battery. Leave for 10 mins.

Turn the steering wheel 90 degrees, feel the back there's a hole. Place a thin flat head screw driver in and try get it to face upwards as much as possible. Once it's in, pull it up, hence forcing the screwdriver downwards.

What you are trying to do is push down on a release clip which will release the airbag from the wheel. It takes patience because it takes time to push the clip down with enough force and at the right angle to make it unclip.

Once you've done one side, turn the wheel 180 degrees and do the same for the other side.

The airbag will now be loose, pull it away slightly and unplug it from any loom.

Then there is one massive bolt in the centre behind the airbag cover. Remove this and the rest is fairly self explanatory.

Just be careful pulling the wheel away as you don't want to do what I did and completely rip out the airbag coil, because once that's done there's no going back! It has to stay out!

I've just had to change the indicator stalk on the missus 6n2 gti and the vw way is far better than trying to use a screwdriver!

If you dont have a 90 degree screwdriver then make one using a junior hacksaw which i did. Follow the above intructions by vw i.e insert and turn clockwise

and its done in minutes!

no need for sarcasm....i was told to use a screwdriver. Then after f***ing around i decided to have a seach on here and found the thread with vw instructions.

So just pointing out to people that if you dont have a 90dergree screwdriver not all is lost as you can cut down a hacksaw and grind down the end like a screwdriver.

no worries dude. tell you it was well handy having that old hacksaw and grinder about! lol.

Old thread i know but i'm getting desperate trying to remove my flippin air bag 6n2, so i can re position the steering wheel after installing new   tie rods,You wouldn't happen to have a photo of the tool you made from a junior hacksaw would you.

Insert a screwdriver with approx. 5 mm wide blade and angled at 90deg to give a length of 55 mm, from the back side into hole in steering wheel hub.

So you can twist it to release the catch

OK finally managed to get the airbag off,using an old modified metal toilet cistern rod i had in me shed so all is good.Thanks for replys ,i have the airbag light on now,?so how do we switch it off.

You'll need VCDS with a CANbus lead as the airbag only communicates via the CANbus :(
