Now this bit is VERY VERY IMPORTANT.

GO VISIT A SHOP OR A FRIEND THAT HAS AN RTA MACHINE AND GET THE WHOLE LOT SET UP PROPERLY

If the system was set up by ear (which I'm guessing it was) then your gains will be reasonably accurate but not spot on unless you had someone who has been doing this for years set them. (I know people who have been setting up audio for 20+ years and still refuse to go by ear as RTA's are always more accurate)

more importantly an RTA machine will also display where there are flaws in the system. It will give you the specific frequencies that are "out of line" with the rest of the frequency range. It works by placing a microphone in the listening position of the drivier and playing a number of test tracks to project a visual image of the audio in the form of a frequency curve.

some examples:

This curve shows a system which is overboosting on the bass end of the scale and not producing any high frequency. It would sound bloody awful! No detail in sound and would be quite hollow. Its also severly lacking in midrange between 200htz and 5ktz which means all instruments like snare drums, oboes, cellos, acoustic guitars, pianos - near enough EVERYTHING would sound muddy and incoherant.

This is a "flat" curve. (ignore the facts its not level with the white line- it actually is but the control simply hasnt been centred on the unit) Better than the one above but would sound completely lifeless. Some people beleive this is perfect as it is supposedly a true representation of the recording but 80-90% of the time it lacks colour and warmth in the sound. you need a little lift in the music with a gentle roll off.

An Ideal curve would be somewhere in between those two. not completely flat but with a gentle slope and a smooth roll off at the end of the high frequency range.

Best bet is to get yourself to a local high quality audio shop and ask them to RTA the car and then you can see if it needs EQing or not. shouldnt cost more than £20 or so :)

I am pleased with it but I need a little more sound deadening got a few vibrations on the go at the moment.

One thing thats wrong though is there is a buzzing coming from the componenets. Like when you turn your home stereo on full wack with a CD paused you can hear a buzz.

Its weird becuase it changes frequency as I accelerate and sounds a bit like a charger in a G40 :lol.

Any idea's as to what it is.

yup- 99% sure the cause of that would be a bad earth. Either one (or possibly both) of your amps have not been earthed correctly OR they have been earthed correctly but to a point in the boot area that isnt very effective.

to earth the system ensure firstly you pick a good earth point. must be quite solid and have a thickness to the metal area of the body that you are grinding down. normally boot floor is pretty useless. a half decent point is one of the bolts holding the seatbelt clips in place as they are normally quite thick. you want to use the one closest to the chasis as possible and grind down the paintwork to bare metal in the contact area properly. once you have made the contact use a little vaseline on the surface are and join to prevent corrosion.

That should sort it.

Well, and now I'm not sure this was the right thing to do now.

Becuase there were so many earth wires, I used a dist block, all the earths from the amps and volt meter thingy went into the Dist block, then there is one wire coming from the dist block to the car. Would having a dist block cause that problem or would it be the connection to the car that is at fault?

there is nothing wrong with using a distribution block for the earth (so long as its not a fused one?) but you must make sure that all your connections are SOLID. make sure the wires are all a snug fit and the allen key bolts are tightened in properly etc. again check your earthing point to make sure its ground down properly etc.

one other thing is you dont want your earth cables to be too long. if you have any excess cut it off. short as possible for earth cables.

yup- thickness of the earth cable should be identical to the thickness of the power cable.

Bollocks :(, the power cable is 2 guage I think and the earth 4 guage. Which ever way round there meant to be, the power cable is the thickness up from the earth.

change it. very important as you create a bottleneck in the current. worst case it could be slightly hazardous!

Ok well I'll pick some more cable up on Sat when I get all my levels set and get some more sound deadening.

Well I havea vibration and dont know where it is, so if I sound deaden everything it wont be there.

Plus this isnt going to be the stuff thats £25 a roll either.

A mate who has a trimming company has aquired 100's of square meters of the stuff. Its the same as that dynomat stuff just without the silver shinny side.

They've used it in a few TVR's and Porsches that wanted sound deadening, Totally ripped them of, but I get it for about 5p a square meter.

what make is your head unit? and i am an alpine person my self are u thinking of have in perspecs in your bootbuild i would not recomend it because u cant cleant it coz it scraches 2 easly and it expensive and defo not easy 2 work with lol
